Hey all, yesterday I went for my week 34 anti natal check up.

My doc made two comments that I want opinions on.

Firstly, I told her about the general aches and pains I had been getting. She then examined my bump and said "no wonder you've been getting them 'you're all bump'.." does that mean there's not much water or something else?

Secondly, she when feeling the position of baby she said that my baby's head was "very, very low, and she could expect to see me in the labour ward in a couple of weeks". I'm a bit confused about this because I'm just 34 weeks so 36 weeks makes baby premature right? Is she expecting me to go into labour early? Maybe I misunderstood what she meant.

I'm kicking myself for not asking what she meant at the time! 🙄

“You’re all bump” just means you have a large bump relative to your size. Are you quite petite?

If your baby is large and engaged, maybe doctor anticipates a slightly early delivery. 38 weeks is considered full term, so maybe doctor just wasn’t very precise about the “couple” of weeks.

If you do go into labour early, 36 weeks is not a problem from a medical perspective. Your baby would probably be a little skinny (but perhaps not if your doctor is right about their size), but otherwise fully developed. They’d be a bit more monitored, but that level of prematurity rarely causes any issues.

Don’t worry! You are probably focussing on a throwaway comment that meant nothing at all!

I would not worry too much about the comments. It is very hard to predict things with pregnancy and babies. With DS2 the midwife said at one of my later appointments that he was very low and they would expect me to go into labour before my due date. However at my next appointment he had moved and he ended up being born 2 weeks late!

The you're all bump comment just means that your bump is big now (obviously as you are heavily pregnant) and that big bumps are very uncomfortable.

Baby head being low is a good thing, they are getting into position. If she had any actual worries about a premature labour you would now about it. It would have been clear. She just meant that you are nearly there now. You are only 3 weeks off being full term I think.

I think she was trying to be friendly and not too clinical but you were expecting clinical so it threw you a bit!

Don’t worry at all. I agree with all the other posters re the bump comment. If she was worried about levels of amniotic fluid she would have said and scanned for it etc.

Your baby is getting ready to come out! That’s great news but likely won’t be for at least another 2-3 weeks. I think she was just trying to be friendly and reassuring.

Good luck 🙂

My first DS was low and engaged early on didn’t appear until 42 weeks ... so I wouldn’t worry too much about being early but if you are 36 weeks won’t cause much of an issue in most cases!

Babies can be engaged and then move back up again so don't let the comments alarm you
