The NHS doesn't offer even as many vaccinations as some other countries as standard (eg chickenpox - standard in Germany). Clearly it has evidence that it is important and has more benefits than disbenefits otherwise it wouldn't shell out for it. So statistically massively better to get it than not!

On 2012, 14 babies too young to receive vaccines themselves, died from whooping cough. The risk isn't just theoretical.

That is why the booster during pregnancy was introduced. The antibodies the pregnant woman produces in response to the jab cross the placenta and confer some protection to the newborn.

It's a miserable disease to have at any age.

Hi, I'm newly pregnant about 9 weeks and I hadn't even heard of this until my midwife mentioned it on my phone call appointment... she also mentioned the flu jab... i decide I was going to get the whooping cough but what about the flu jab? I'm nervous about this as I know people who have been ill from it and especially with COVID it's made me nervous and abit scared... of I don't get the flu does that also mean the baby isn't protected as if that's the case then I'll get both as wouldn't want to risk any harm to the baby... just wanted some clarification that the flu had is safe thanks :)

@CWF123 the flu vaccine is an inactive jag so doesn’t actually contain any virus and wouldn’t make you ill.

It’s recommended to pregnant women as we have a higher chance of complications if we do get the flu - here is the nhs info on it:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/flu-jab-vaccine-pregnant/

I’d defo recommend getting it When flu season starts.
