posted this under the work section and got no response so hoping for more of a response here

I lost my job due to coronavirus. I have been crazy applying for jobs and finally today I had a phonecall interview for a sales company. I have made it through to the next stage and been invited in for a face to face interview next week.

I'm starting to get a bump and my black trousers will not do up! Anyone know where to get maternity work wear/ smart clothes that will hide the bump?

Also at what point do I tell them I'm pregnant? At the interview? Once they have offered me the job? Or once I have started? I legally have 4/5 weeks until I have to tell them

I always find it difficult. To me I don't care if you were pregnant or not if you were the right fit for the company but some managers say it damages trust between themselves and the staff member as they'd have preferred you to be open and honest.
If you do tell them they 'legally' cannot discriminate against you.
In terms of clothes I'd be going for a formal black trouser and blazer look which won't hide your bump! However I got my maternity work clothes from normal stores just went a size up!

Tricky. I don’t know whether I’d tell them or not. Legally they can’t discriminate, but I imagine a lot of businesses are close to the wire at the moment, so I suppose someone pregnant might be an expense they’d really struggle with. Would they have to pay you maternity pay? When would you start? Or would you be claiming maternity allowance (less cost to them, so maybe less worrying to them)

Seconding just try a size up if you can still do that (I could for DD1, not a chance this pregnancy), It’s tough to find maternity clothes that look really professional as they are intended to fit many different sizes of bump.

I’m applying for jobs at the moment although I am very early on at the moment (only 5/6 weeks) I plan to keep it to myself as long as possible. If I was you I wouldn’t say anything until you legally have to, you’d completely shoot yourself in the foot if you told them at interview definitely don’t do that. As for clothes a loose fitting top with black jacket and trousers, if it was colder I’d also add a silk scarf too, but I think it might look odd middle of summer. I thought I’d be further on and applying for jobs so I googled how to hide a bump extensively.

Don’t tell them. You aren’t obliged to and the sad reality is that you can’t trust all employers not to use it to discriminate against you (it shouldn’t be that way but it is).

Good luck!

Sorry to hear you lost your job .. I was in a similar situation and I have started my job and found out I was pregnant two days later ... Iv only been there 2 weeks at the mo according to the government guidelines you don't need to tell your employer until 15 weeks before your due date so your fine.
I personally wouldn't tell them at the interview I know they can't discriminate but they could find another reason not to hire you.
Wear all black, what about a nice jumpsuit with a blazer or if you have a nice blouse with some fuffles to disguise your bump.
Asos do some nice bits :)... and congratulations on your interview fingers crossed for you!
I don't plan on telling my employer for as long as possible.

I'd be claiming maternity allowance, work up until I can't anymore and would return once baby is 3 months (able to attend nursery) I have a supportive family and my sister is a manager at a local nursery so baby would go there as they do flexible hours, pay hourly and can change hours to suit needs each week

I’d hide the bump to interview.

Once you get the job and start you can do the ‘obviously I’m pregnant, here’s my plan, so glad you didn’t let the bump put you off’ spiel

sassenach84 · 02/07/2020 20:13

Tell them when you accept the offer? They wouldn't be able to rescind the offer then (legally) but at least you've told them asap?

CWF123 · 02/07/2020 20:25

It's none of their business you don't need to tell them for a while, get and overdose shoulder bag to help disguise and if you get the job tell them after a month... your well within your right. Honestly don't over think it I was so worried and I now think this much happen so much :)
