Hey everyone,

Massively feeling sorry for myself because I just feel totally at a loss.

What can I do for this awful back pain?? I always knew I would struggle later in pregnancy with my back because I cracked my coccyx when I was younger which never healed, so have for years had issues on and off with it. the Pain is so low down, almost as if if I were to press onto where the pain is it would be just in the top of my (sorry tmi) bum crack. So far i've tried...

Hot water bottle - although the warmth is nice it means that my back is in a funny position because of how low down it needs to be.so makes me more uncomfortable.

Warm bath - again, warmth is lovely but laying in one position for too long is too painful, especially flat on my back. Tried laying on my side in there too but I have super bony hips so that hurt too!

1 Paracetamol - I try to avoid taking anything at all in terms of medication or painkillers but this night I was sobbing from the pain and it only just took the edge off.

I'm not sleeping from it and just feel at the end of my tether....help!!!

Keep moving? I know it's probably not what you feel like doing. I used to have back ache for years when I worked in an office & sat down all day. Now I work in retail and am on my feet all day I just don't get back ache.

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 02/07/2020 23:21

This probably isn't helpful at the moment because I'm unsure if these kind of businesses are open but acupuncture was the only thing that helped me

Is it pain from the old injury for sure? So no stretches or massage balls or anything will help?

How do you normally treat it in a flare up - stronger pain killers etc? Have you spoken to your GP?

CheesePlanted · 02/07/2020 23:25

I don’t know about your specific condition, but when I was PG I had lots of problems with my sacroiliac joint. I saw a physio and did some exercises and stretches which were helpful. Also I found wearing a bump band for support helped. Can you ask GP if a physio referral would be helpful?
Talk to your Midwife, but I think paracetomol is fine if you need it

I’ve been battling sciatica on and off during this pregnancy so sympathies! Things that have been helping me:

  • pregnancy pillow for in bed
  • Pregnancy yoga classes (originally in person now via Zoom - not sure if ok with your injury though)
  • birthing ball - it’s the only comfortable thing I can sit on now!

Hi op,
I'm sorry you're in so much pain Confused I'm not nearly as far on as you but I suffer bad back pain from working in a busy restaurant, I get regular acupuncture (I live in the Algarve so all businesses are already open) and when the pain is really bad I use ice packs before bed to almost numb the pain, then heat patches to go to sleep!

Anything worth a try when it's affecting your daily life! Good luck x

ConstantlyPanicking · 03/07/2020 00:11

Thank you all for your replies. I totally get the whole keeping moving thing which sometimes is fine but once the pain is there it hurts to walk around at all!!

Maybe a birth ball would be a good idea for sitting - maybe that’s my next move?

I do use a pregnancy pillow which is more comfortable but nighttime is probably the worst because of it stiffening so I’m constantly flipping left and right!

I did see a physio for it years back but their main suggestions were stretching which sometimes help sometimes don’t!! Usually (when not preg) I would take stronger painkillers for sure!

Again, so appreciate all the suggestions x

Osteopath sorted me out after trying all other options. Good luck!

Hiya, you can take stronger pain killers if needed.

I have Chronic pain anyway after a car accident a long time ago. GP advised that I’d be fine to take codeine and paracetamol during pregnancy. So please talk to your GP of its so bad that you’re crying. Hell I’ve rang 111 and had an out of hours appointment before because I couldn’t cope with the pain anymore.

A tens machine might be worth ago, you’ll have to check the advice for use during pregnancy but that’s another useful tool in taking pain down a notch or two without medication.

Google fascia stick..might help

Do you have a DP who could try gently pushing on the area, sometimes counter pressure is helpful (but be v gentle)

Talk to GP

Support the bump with whatever, whenever

Rather than using a pregnancy pillow in bed, try getting a fleecy blanket (very squashy) and crumple it up and shove it under you while lying on your side. You might need a couple, but use it to support you from knee to cheek. Its firmer than a pillow and doesnt sprong out in the moddle of the night

I had awful back pain with my first and I would highly recommend yoga. There's a brilliant course online by Lucy Flow. The best thing is to keep moving and to be active as much as you can- even though you don't feel like it. I really feel for you as it's horrible being in so much pain. Try and get some physio exercises too!

Yoga. I periodically get back pain and suffer from pelvic misalignment. It sorts it every time.
