Pregnancy sickness medication safety

My GP won't prescribe me cyclizine for all day nausea without vomiting even though I have heard of other women who have been prescribed this specifically for nausea.

Unfortunately promethazine is making me drowsy hence my request to change.

They state it is a question of safety but my understanding from NICE and the FDA is that cyclizine is a first line drug and rated B respectively. Promethezine although first line recommended is FDA rated C. They have now recommended metoclopramide? If you were prescribed this, how did you find it?

My hope is to come off medication completely. I only started on Saturday and I am now 13+1 weeks. Without medication I am sofa ridden and unable to function despite not being sick.

I now feel very unsure if the decision made is based on risk or cost to the NHS. Can anyone shed light on their experiences please?

Thank you.

I am on metaclopramide and it's definitely helping. I still feel sick but it does allow me to function. I was super nervous to take it but the doctor reassured me that they wouldn't give us anything that was unsafe. I'm only 8 weeks so not sure if baby is going to be ok yet but my fingers are crossed!

I was put on prochlorperazine before this and it didn't work - never offered cyclazine though.

Interesting, cyclizine was the first thing I was offered, and I've heard of lots of other people having it as the standard anti-nausea drug. I can't give you any advice about metaclopramide, but I wonder if they didn't offer cyclizine as that is also known to make you drowsy (mine knocks me out if I have a whole tablet, so I take half at a time).

Sympathy, OP. I'm just weaning myself off anti-nausea at nearly 18 weeks. The sofa-ridden days are incredibly tough, I hope you feel better soon. Please go easy on yourself though - even with anti-nausea tablets I'm still sick once or twice a day, so although they do help a lot and allow you to function, you still need to be forgiving of yourself.

I had severe nausea and I guess medium? vomiting (not HG levels but 2-3x a day) from seven weeks. My OB prescribed cyclizine as a first-line treatment and also wrote me a script for five days of metaclopramide. She said the metaclopramide was a second-line treatment and advised that I only take it if I didn't see any improvement after five days on cyclizine.

I haven't taken the metaclopramide yet, 14+5 now and testing a lower dose of cyclizine (gone down from 3x a day to 2x) to see what it's like now that the placenta's kicked in. My nausea is substantially better but I'm still throwing up once a day lol. For what it's worth I don't get drowsy on the cyclizine.

I am almost 10 weeks and suffering with HG. My GP readily prescribed Cyclizine at 6 weeks - in fact she said this was the medication she was most confident in prescribing in terms of safety. Perhaps have further discussion with the GP or ask to speak with another Dr?

For me, Cyclizine curbs the vomiting and takes the edge off the nausea but as a previous poster says it absolutely knocks me out. I literally have a 2-3 hour sleep after taking a tablet but at least I can keep (most) food and drink down.

Hope the nausea eases for you soon.
