I've not had a CS with my pervious babies and not expecting one this time but I was reading up just incase and it seems everyone talks about having a catheter in but I've never seen anyone mention if you have clothes/pjs put back on you and underwear? I assume you can't do that yourself being numb from the waist down so what about your bleeding and needing maternity pads on etc? I'm rather confused after thinking about it more in depth now, if anyone can help I'd appreciate it incase it comes to an emergency so I know what to expect

You're in a surgical gown and I stayed in that overnight I think. Can't really remember. I got dressed when I showered and left the hospital.

TokyoSushi · 01/07/2020 22:35

I stayed in a surgical gown until the next day when I wore a nightie which I found much more comfortable around the waist.

Drbrowns · 01/07/2020 22:36

I’ve had three. In the hospital I go to the standard is to leave the catheter in for 24hrs incase you have to go back down to surgery. The nurses check and change your pads every so often, and you have a nappy pad on the bed which they change as well. Once the heavy bleeding had died down I usually ask for them to help me put on underware and maternity pad over the catheter tube so I feel less vulnerable. The catheter can feel a bit uncomfortable once you start to get feeling back down below but it’s not too bad.

I didn’t bleed much at all after cs. And I bloody loved the catheter as I didn’t have to get up to wee!Grin

Pipandmum · 01/07/2020 22:42

I think they took the catheter out as soon as I could stand and walk to the toilet. I then changed from hospital gown to my own night dress. So no underwear on until they took it out. Can't remember about the bleeding bit at the hospital to be honest.

justtmee · 01/07/2020 22:43

My hospital has a policy to mobilise as soon as sensation has returned to the legs, about 6 hours. A HCP comes and removes the catheter, at this point you're in a gown and pad on the bed. She then helps you put knickers and a pad on and to stand up. At this point you can get dressed into your own clothes if you choose. Bleeding often not bad after a section due to the suction used during the operation.

Catheter in for 8hrs here. I've been up and walking around before this. The numbness only lasts an hour or so after the op then you can feel your legs again. I've always been on a nightie by the time I'm coming down to the ward. Big massive pads out into net knickers by the staff on the labour ward who also clean you up down there.

I had an emergency c section in the early afternoon. They gave me a bed bath in the early evening and asked me if I had a nightdress, which I didn't as I didn't plan for a section at all. I still had the catheter in so the pyjamas that I packed weren't any use. So I just put a vest on and had nothing on the bottom half. They changed the maternity pad. That was it until about 6am the next morning when they took the catheter out and I could then get up to shower and change.

In hindsight I would have packed very differently!! I only had leggings to wear on the bottom half but I was so swollen I could hardly get them on so went home looking a mess and so uncomfortable.

Disneymum1993 · 01/07/2020 22:54

Iv had 3 and each time nurses washed me and put in in clean nightie and pants with catheter still in . I got it out each time roughly 6 hours after when I was able to walk but after my 3rd I had to have it in for a week

SleepingStandingUp · 01/07/2020 22:58

When I had mine 6 months ago I had a bed wash from a hca and she helped get me dressed. I'm an idiot and packed Pj's but thry were v roomy so she got them on me. Catheter out late on the evening (had babies early on the day)

Avearage · 01/07/2020 23:40

Ohhhhhh I'd not even thought about this!! I literally can't think of anything worse 😔 I hate relying on anyone let alone having to have help to wash and dress and be decent .... I just don't fancy all the faffing I know it's there job and seen all B4 etc etc but I'd rather just have sort myself out

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 01/07/2020 23:47

With both of mine I was in my own clothes before the catheter came out, just no knickers. Dc2, I had help with a bed bath in recovery (whilst the midwife and consultant who delivered her were stealing newborn hugs) and then someone passed me my dress. Catheter came out around six hours post delivery and I put underwear/pad on then. You can decline the bed bath. I had a shower about 10 hours after dd was born as well

ShowOfHands · 01/07/2020 23:51

I had DS at 3.30pm and was in the shower by 6pm, catheter gone and into pyjamas. Before that, I had an inco pad on the bed and a pad wedged between my legs.

applefig · 02/07/2020 12:14

Oh wow i can't belive I've never seen anyone mention and talk about these things before! I'm definitely going to take a nighty just incase, i had only planned to take pjs before lol

DD was born at 8pm and the catheter was removed the next morning. I just had pads between my legs (and a machine to massage my legs as they were so swollen, it was amazing!) I didn't have to move, the midwives changed my pads a couple of times during the night.

rottiemum88 · 02/07/2020 12:55

I had a c section at 9pm, got wheeled to recovery, the midwife there got me cleaned up and into my own nightie and I was taken to my room for the night, then left til the next morning (I could have buzzed if I needed anything). Think I had the catheter in until around lunchtime. Not much bleeding at all after the section

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 02/07/2020 13:07

Button through pjs are better than nighties especially if you want to breastfeed. Just leave the bottoms off. That's what I wore at night/the morning I was discharged.

EyeDrops · 02/07/2020 13:09

I already had a nightie on that I'd been wearing in labour, with no pants obviously. Emcs at 10.45pm, I was given a wash in bed by the most lovely midwife in the early hours sometime, catheter was removed around 10am when I could stand up again. It was so wonderful not needing the loo!! 😂
I can't remember at all about pants/pads. I think they put a pad under me and changed it a few times until I could get up, then once the catheter was out I showered and put my own on.

Foggymist · 02/07/2020 13:10

Nurses helped me change from surgical gown into my nice nightie as soon as I arrived back to the ward after theatre, catheter stayed in for about 18 hours until morning. They just placed a big pad between my legs and changed it when needed with the bleeding. It was all a bit weird for my first cs but I was sick so didn't care, second time around I knew what to expect so the loss of dignity wasn't as terrifying!

totallyyesno · 02/07/2020 13:13

I had a csection at 8am and the catheter was taken out after lunchtime and I hot up in the afternoon.
