Hi lovelies
I have just had a call from the midwife to tell me that I am rhesus negative. I had never heard about this before today and never known my blood type and I’m trying to research about it as it was a bit of a whirlwind on the phone and I didn’t have enough time to process it.
So I’m aware that I will need the anti d injections at 28 weeks and after birth and to be mindful of any knocks or bumps.
However, I have just realised that I was extremely unwell at 7 weeks with gastroenteritis and had several days of bleeding which I did visit a&e for. Does this sound like I have had a incident to any of you?? And would it have an impact at 7 weeks? I’m now 13 weeks.
I’m sorry for being a worrier it’s just I’m so new to this and I’m having a bit of a freak out.
Please help 🙏🏼

I'm pretty sure that it's not as much of an issue in the first trimester, I had occasional bleeding in the first trimester and never had to have an anti d, they don't test you until booking in anyway, I was 16 weeks when I found out my blood type. If you're worried though, give your midwife a call, I just had the anti d at 28 weeks and thankfully no knocks or bumps. Then had another jab after DD was born as her blood type was positive

Flamingolingo · 30/06/2020 20:05

I don’t know off the top of my head, but if you didn’t know your rhesus type surely they would have checked just to be sure? As for being Rh- it’s not such a big deal, just a few extra injections. Best to check with your midwife though. It probably won’t cause any issue for this baby, but the presence of antibodies is a potential problem in future pregnancies. Just out of interest, do you know the father’s blood type, because if also Rh- then not an issue anyway.

I am Rhesus Negative too, I have 2 healthy kids 18 & 14. I didn't have the anti d injection. Don't worry it will all be ok. Just need to carry something on you and make it clear in your notes ( which it will be). Stop worrying.

gamerchick · 30/06/2020 20:07

Does your bloke know his blood group? Of he's negative as well, you won't need any injections.

erised24 · 30/06/2020 20:07

I'm Rh- negative too. You'll only need injections if your baby is positive. Mine is also negative so have had no issues or injections.

It's mostly only an issue for second babies.

hummingbirdhm · 30/06/2020 20:15

My hubs doesn’t know his type unfortunately

I am rh- too, and husband is +.

Can't say we gave it a moment's thought apart from when I had the anti-d.

Ohthereyouarepeter · 30/06/2020 20:23

I work in blood transfusion and we would not issue anti-D for pv bleeds before 12 weeks. I’ll be getting my anti-D injection in a few weeks, ah the joys of being Rh D beg.

pettyprudence · 30/06/2020 20:24

Rh- here too and caused no issues. Turns out DH must be too as I didn't need the injections post birth as both children are rh- too (which is lucky because they ballsed up processing dc1's blood test post birth and it would have been too late for me to have the anti-d injection). They still gave me an anti-d at 28w with dc2.

APurpleSquirrel · 30/06/2020 20:28

I'm Rh- too & DH is Rh- too but I had to have Anti-D in case he wasn't the father lol. As it was DD was Rh- though diff blood type, with DS pregnancy they typed his blood in utero through my blood test & determine he was the same as me so I didn't need the Anti-D with him.

Jannyapple66 · 30/06/2020 20:31

It absolutely has no affect on your pregnancy
Do not worry about this at all
You'll have Anti D which will mop up the antigens and everything else is normal
After ... really worth you considering being a blood donor if you are able and willing
Rhesus neg blood can be given to anyone ... even in an emergency
While my boring old Rh pos is very selective... congratulations on the pregnancy, enjoy !

Sunnyhopefulness · 30/06/2020 20:32

Im negative - one of my children is negative , the other positive . I had to have the injection for the positive one . Caused no issue at all though .

Fourfoot · 30/06/2020 20:36

I'm rhesus negative, my baby is positive (I find it very clever that they can tell her blood group even before she's born!!) Is having differing blood types hadn't caused any issues at all, I need to have the anti D injection on Friday at my 28 week check up then they'll double check her blood type when she's born.

Zoflorabore · 30/06/2020 20:36

Mine are now 17 and 9 and I only found out I was rhesus negative 18 years ago when pregnant. I had 2 injections and the same when I was pregnant with my youngest.

My nanna always said as a child that I must be rhesus negative as I was so pale. Mine is AB neg which is quite rare.

Both of my dc are positive.

gamerchick · 30/06/2020 21:08

I'm Rh- too & DH is Rh- too but I had to have Anti-D in case he wasn't the father lol

Heh, yeah they get quite narky when you refuse.

Avearage · 30/06/2020 21:13

I'm rh- too they did a blood test to check baby before giving anti d where I am if baby was also rh- they don't give it x

RestorationInsanity · 30/06/2020 21:14

I'm 18 weeks and rhesus negative. They gave me a blood test which showed the baby is 99.9999 etc per cent likely to be rhesus negative too so I don't need to have anti D although I've been pregnant before. You could ask to have that test and if the baby is negative too it will put your mind at rest, if not you'll know you need the injections or they will give them to you anyway if you don't have the test

Peasypasta67 · 30/06/2020 21:16

Hi RH- here too. I had a bleed right at the end of my first trimester and they gave me an anti-d injection

Billiematey · 30/06/2020 21:18

I'm Rh-. My first two children are Rh- too, so I didn't need anti D after birth for them, but my third child is Rh+, so I had to go to hospital the day after my home birth to get it... despite me saying I wouldn't be having any more babies!

hummingbirdhm · 30/06/2020 21:24

Thanks all this has really helped to put my mind at ease to hear it’s pretty normal, thank you for sharing your experiences.

@Ohthereyouarepeter thanks for your post too I’m so glad to hear that.

@Jannyapple66 I have a pretty bad reaction to needles/bloods (I usually faint) however now I know about the O- I do feel a moral/social responsibility which I will definitely look into after baby is here x
