iron supplements, only take a couple of times a week though, cos you will get constipated otherwise.

Another vote for spatone here.....I had extremely low iron when pregnant and you can take 2 of them a day. Worked a treat.

PandaG · 26/09/2007 15:04

dried apricots
prune juice - pretty yakky but high in iron

gess · 26/09/2007 15:04

spatone- but everyone's got there first.

Floradix is another possibility, Spatone better I think though.

MorocconOil · 26/09/2007 15:06

Dried apricots
Lentils
Sweet potatoes
liver
steak

Nbg · 26/09/2007 15:06

Spatone, again totally fab.
Drink with ornage juice to absorb the iron.

Eat strawberries, blueberries and oranges. All full of Vit C to absorb iron.

Good ole steak or beef. Full of iron.
Also if you get those bags of spinach, watercress and rocket in the salad aisles at the supermarket, they are lush in a sarnie with turkey, ham and a bit of hoummas.

Nbg · 26/09/2007 15:07

Oh and also cut out caffine and fizzy drinks if you have alot as that zaps your iron.

law3 · 26/09/2007 15:08

vitamin c helps your body to absorb iron and drinking tea decreases iron levels.

Red meat has lots, bovril, oxo, oily fish, sardines, tuna, eggs, weetabix, nuts, beans and pulses and choclate all contain iron.

phdlife · 26/09/2007 15:09

porridge - oats are full of it - with a big glass of OJ, as the Vit C helps absorption of iron.

EmsMum · 26/09/2007 15:10

veg doesn't really have much iron - unless you're veggie then try to eat some meat (I know that one doesnt always fancy it when pg).

The other tip to remember, is to not drink tea with meals (or iron supplements) as the tannins complex with the iron and that will make it not bio-available.

suzycreamcheese · 26/09/2007 15:13

orange juice vitc helps absorb iron into body
try a tomato sauce for pasta with red peppers and parsley..drink oj after

lentils..do not have to be boring and can be 'hidden' in soups

eat your greens you dont know whatt your missing!

CountessDracula · 26/09/2007 15:14

nononon

floradix

Brangelina · 26/09/2007 15:19

Dried fruit, ideally consumed together with fresh fruit as vit C helps absorption (eg. raisins with chopped apple).
Nuts
Pulses
Wheatgerm - just sprinkle some on cereal
Wholemeal anything
Fortified breakfast cereal
Molasses
Different types of grains, eg millet and quinoa, both rich in protein and iron.
Tofu
and of course, red meat, although eating red meat alone with no veg or source of vit C will still make you anaemic (as my ex colleague found and ended up on high dose supplements in her 3rd trimester). Try to always consume at least some tomatoes or a piece of fresh fruit or freshly squeezed juice/smoothies when you eat any of these.

Absolutely avoid the tea within half an hour of eating any of these.

NB Liver should be avoided in pregnancy as too much Vit A.

Another vote here for Spatone.

excitedm2b · 26/09/2007 16:51

chocolate has iron in it!
go for high quality chocolate with 70% or over cocoa rather than milk chocolate.
Obviously you shouldn't pig out on the stuff completely but might help a little!!

Naetha · 26/09/2007 16:57

Spatone is great

If you don't want to take that, then eat lots of red meat, and black pudding has lots of iron in it, although I personally can't stand the stuff!

emj23 · 26/09/2007 19:25

Pregaday iron tablets and spatone don't make you constipated apparently, and I'd recommend breakfast cereals with added iron like bran flakes or weetabix, and dried apricots.

funnypeculiar · 26/09/2007 19:26

Has anyone said dried apricots? Full of iron & imho, rather delicious

mumbleboo · 27/09/2007 09:30

I had Fersamal Iron syrup from the GP, cos the tablets made me really sick and just didn't agree with me. You just take a spoon a day and it was fine, tasted alright!

newgirl · 27/09/2007 12:42

spa tone poured in to orange juice

so good i might start having some again!!

if you are lucky you can get three for two in boots

ladylush · 27/09/2007 12:43
