Nearly 8 weeks pregnant - is this normal?

Hi all,
I am nearly 8 weeks pregnant and an older first time mum...so over thinking everything! When I first found out that I was pregnant, I had really sore and tender boobs...but recently nothing...it just seems that I have very few pregnancy symptoms. I've felt nauseous a couple of times but thankfully haven't been sick. I am not complaining...but just wondering is it normal not to have many symptoms yet? Also the past couple of days I have had pain on and off low down on right hand side...so now I'm worrying about ectopic? I haven't seen a midwife yet...and apparently won't until after my first scan at 12 weeks.. think it will be a phone appointment. Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you.

Advice as you have pain is to seek medical advice.

As you haven't got access to a midwife yet call your gp and ask for a call back. In early pregnancy you normally have to go through the gp first. If your gp can't do call back give 111 a call.

Lastly - symptoms can come and go. I was freaking out last week that my morning sickness stopped at 8 weeks but it was back again 3 days later and I haven't been as sick as other pregnancies but I am working from home and I think commuting made it much worse

@welshladywhois40 thank you for your help. As this is my first pregnancy it's hard to know what to expect and what is "normal", so thank you. I will give my GP a call and hopefully they will be able to help or refer to midwife? The pain comes and goes on my right hand side low down. I think I would just like some sort of reassurance about this etc. I hope your sickness is manageable...I definitely think travelling could make it worse.

The pain could be (and probably is) round ligament pain which is really normal but I agree that it is safest to get to checked out. I hope all is ok.

oldermama2021 · 29/06/2020 13:44

@SunbathingDragon this may sound silly but what is round ligament pain? Yes think I will ring the GP and see what they say. I hope everything will be ok. Thank you

Yes I had this in first successful pregnancy and have it again now in this one. As pp said round ligament pain. Basically everything starting to stretch and grow to make room.

I have it particularly bad if I stand to quickly or move to fast. Usually always right side, like a stabbing or sharp pain.

Absolutely get checked if worried but just wanted to share that I also had this.

Hi Smile when I was around 6-8 weeks I was getting little niggly pains on my right side. I was terrified about ectopic but as the pain wasn't bad and wasn't constant I'd tried not to worry. I had an early viability scan (private) and it showed I had a right corpus luteal cyst which was likely the cause of the pain! They're very common and I'd say it's more likely to be that than round ligament pain especially if it's your first pregnancy (as I only started to get that from around 17 weeks as bump appeared and more stretching went on!).
As PP have said ring GP/midwife if you're really concerned or the pain is worsening. Also with regard to lack of other symptoms, I've also had hardly any. No sickness, just tired and a few migraines but not the typical 'google' symptoms I was expecting. We always fear the worst, especially as first timers! But hopefully everything will be just fine and you'll be another lucky one with minimal symptoms.

I had lots of pain on my right hand side in the early weeks. I’d also had spotting, and diarrhoea which I’d googled and can be a sign of ectopic. I had an early scan, which confirmed pregnancy was in correct location - they saw that my bowel was in spasm which is what probably caused the pain.

It could also be round ligament pain as said.

It’s so scary in the early weeks. Do speak to GP and if the pain gets any worse or is accompanied by any bleeding then see if you can contact your local EPU directly (some are walk in or self refer). Having said that what you’ve described is also very normal - and the lack of symptoms is too. I have not been sick once (I’m nearly 36 weeks), my friend who has a 3 year old says if she hadn’t have got fatter and her periods stopped she’d never have known she was pregnant, she didn’t have a single other symptom until the last couple of months when she got heartburn! I definitely kept thinking my symptoms had disappeared- looking back they varied but I overanalysed it so much I definitely convinced myself of all sorts.

Thank you @icedaisy and @bluebell94. It is reassuring to know that you also have had these symptoms. I haven't told any family or friends yet about the pregnancy as we were waiting to the 12 week scan first, so there is nobody I can ask for advice lol. I might give it a little while and see if it gets worse or stays the same and then decide about contacting GP. I doubt I'll escape the sickness...I don't think I'll be that lucky...lol...but I have been experiencing headaches and tiredness, which wouldn't be the norm for me...also feeling very warm!! Lol! As a first time mum, I am always thinking the worst...especially being that bit older, so thank you for your advice.

@AliasGrape Thank you...I also have googled and that's nearly worse...so I am resisting the urge to do that. I haven't had any bleeding so that's good but yes I am definitely over analysing things! I'm sure the symptoms will come and I'll regret saying I didn't have any!! Can I ask...did your GP refer you for an early scan to rule out ectopic? I'm thinking of booking a private scan so that my hubby can come along too as I don't think they can attend hospital appts at the minute. You don't have long to go...are you excited?

I had an early scan on Friday at my local EPU as I'd also had some right sided pain. The EPU were lovely - my partner was allowed to come in with me at all times and they're really reassuring there. My scan thankfully showed a teeny jelly-bean baby with a hearbeat, so the pain has been put down to ligament stretching (or possibly aggravated scar tissue from my appendix removal).

I'd call your GP and try and get a referral for a scan.

AliasGrape · 29/06/2020 17:10

@oldermama2021

My gp didn’t refer me no as the EPU near me is self referral so I called them direct. They would only see me if I was having bleeding and pain though, but I think they’re all different in then criteria. An early reassurance scan is also an idea - But google your local epu first and try your GP.

@DappledOliveGroves thank you for your advice. Can I ask...did you have any bleeding or just pain? I'm not sure my local hospital allows partners yet but it's reassuring to know that the midwives were nice and reassuring. So glad that everything turned out well for you and you could see baby and heartbeat. How many weeks are you?

I only had pain. The referral was super quick. I called the GP on Thursday and I had an appointment at the EPU on Friday morning. I was 6+3 for the scan (I'm seven weeks tomorrow).

oldermama2021 · 29/06/2020 18:55

@AliasGrape Thank you for the advice. I am not sure how it works with the EPU as I haven't received and information yet. I'll give the GP a call and see what they suggest and what way it works.

Thank you for the link....I'll definitely join in!!

@DappledOliveGroves thank you. I will give the GP a call and see how it works. As the pain has not gone...it comes and goes this afternoon. I'm sure it was reassuring to see baby.

Just to update...the pain has been going on for couple of more days so I rang my GP and she suggested going to A&E to get checked out to rule out ectopic. I went and they carried out blood tests, also ecg as my pulse was fast...which could be due to pain or feeling anxious. They scanned and could see pregnancy was in correct location but was not sure of the cause of the pain so need to keep an eye in case it's appendix, bowel etc. Just wanted to thank everyone for your help.

It sounds similar to me, when I first found out at around 4 weeks I had all the symptoms under the sun, but they all went within a few days of each other a few weeks later. I also had one sided lower down pain and some bleeding so went to A&E to rule out ectopic, but all fine and now I'm 18 weeks. I kept getting pain intermittently, they thought possibly because I've got PCOS something to do with my ovaries. Since then I've got awful round ligament pain and feel like my uterus has snapped in half whenever I sneeze! Grin

But baby is all fine through it all
