Can a breech baby "drop"?

Just wondered if it is possible for a breech baby to drop. I've noticed the last couple of days that my bump is looking lower than normal. Also, since yesterday morning, i've woken up with palpatations and they've more or less stayed with me for two days now. I drink no more than 3 cups of tea/coffee a day.

I know it's a daft question but do you think the two are related?

TIA.

it is possible for a breech baby to engage. I think you should speak to your midwife, and also mention the palpitations.

The palpitations could simply be an increased awareness of your heartbeat due to your organs being 'squashed' up a little to accomodate the baby. But you should mention it anyway.

Thanx belgo - perhaps she is engaged as the kicks have got lower again too. They used to be on my lower tummy but now they're kind of upper fanjo area again.

Do you think i should ring the MW to check it out or just wait for my next appointment next Wednesday?

Does it cause problems to baby if it engages whilst breech?

I spoke to my MW earlier who said it's a fairly normal thing whilst pg. She also told me to watch my chocolate intake as this is notorious for causing this sort of problem. But one thing got me thinking - it's only happened over the last couple of days, which happens to coincide with when we bought a different variety of squash. Both DP and I have been drinking it and he confessed to me just now that he's also been getting some palpitations, but just shrugged it off. We did notice how sweet the squash was compared to our normal variety.

I wonder if we're both having a reaction to the squash?

I would steer clear of that squash.

My baby's bottom started engaging at 38 weeks so I think it's possible your baby has dropped down, it's a bit early to engage though isn't it? I'm no expert though....

I had a breech baby but there was no way he could engage as he was a complete bottom first. There are various breech positions so some could engage I suppose!

Good luck with the birth - I had to have a c-section and it was brilliant!!

I'm with Bennj, I had an awkward bum first l.o and had a cs and it was the best experience, after being desperate for a completely natural HB I will now be booking in for CS for all future babies!!
My bump dropped for a bit too between 32-35 wks but then moved back up a bit and ended up fairly high up by delivery. That said he was head down and 3/5ths engaged at 30 weeks so there is still quite a bit of room for them to move around at 31 weeks - my l.o certainly made the most of it!

Thanx for your replies everyone. I laid off the squash last night (and didnt have any caffeine after mid morning yesterday) and notice a dramatic fall the in palpatations. Whilst in bed i only got the tiniest palpatations for a short time, but i'm not sure if it's anxiety about work the next day. I'm not busy at work (quite the opposite in fact) but it's the fact that my bump and pelvis are very uncomfortable atm which makes walking from the station to the office quite painful. It's such a mission atm!

I'm still hopeful of a HWB as i know there is plenty of time for her to turn, especially when i am on mat leave and can encourage her to turn.

DD managed to fool everyone into thinking she had engaged head first. She actually had a foot under her bum and her bum wedged in my pelvis!

So yes, breech babies can indeed engage!

(Glad you are feeling a bit better)

RGPargy · 27/09/2007 11:54

Yikes, ChirpyGirl!! My MW has said that she will send me for a scan at 37 weeks to check on baby's position as i'm planning a HB and obviously dont want to have to be rushed in if she's breech still!

Didn't want to panic you! At least you are getting a scan, she wasn't discovered as breech until I was 41 weeks, by which time it was far too late to do anything about it!
