Looking for some inspiration please 😊 If you have set up a nursery or chosen nursery furniture - what have you gone for? 😊

There is just soooo much choice 🙈 We would love a cot, wardrobe, and some kind of drawers but not fussy whether it’s an actual ‘set’ or whether it is separates.

Also thinking about a nice chair if anyone has suggestions!

Would love photos if anyone wants to share! And more importantly, would you recommend the furniture that you chose? 😊

Buy normal sized furniture for a nursery. All the cute small stuff is great but soon gets outgrown. We bought a normal sized wardrobe chest of drawers etc...... then you haven't got to rebuy in a few years.

Hi OP

Similar to PP, we decided against buying nursery specific items.

I've bought the Hemnes drawers from Ikea in White Stain, going to get a changing top to fit from Etsy, link below.

Not going to get a wardrobe and already have a nice chair so that will make do.

I think some items just get 'outgrown' and aren't useful and you may want to re-use the items later on for different purposes?

The one thing I am getting is nice wallpaper, I'm ordering the jungle theme from munksandme!

Not finished yet so no photos! Sorry!

Thanks @Jumblebumblemess and @LASandOtto - That was what I was holding me back on buying actual nursery furniture. I know a lot of ‘sets’ have removable top on changing table and removable poles etc in wardrobe to make them suitable for use after baby stage but I had a feeling that ‘full size’ was probably more worthwhile!

@LASandOtto Meant to say that I’ve had my eye on the Hemnes 8 drawer chest of drawers too 🤣 and your choice of wallpaper is GORGEOUS! We’re waiting until birth to find out gender so we’ve decided on a nice fresh coat of paint in the nursery and all white furniture then we’ll pick a feature paper and decor type items once we’ve met baby 😊

For DC1 we got an ikea hemnes chest of draws, a sundvik cot and a poang rocking chair. 3 years later that’s still all he has in his room and it’s all still in great condition Smile
We’re just starting to think about getting a wardrobe (there is no need to hang up baby clothes, they fold up perfectly in draws) x

okiedokieme · 26/06/2020 13:41

Another vote for normal furniture. Argos has in their better quality range a white set I bought for dd (not a baby) which would future proof the room. Put a changing mat on the chest of drawers. Unless money is no object, I wouldn't even buy a cot before baby is born, it's amazing how much you change your mind. Just limit purchases to essentials like a safe place to sleep in your room

WK29 · 26/06/2020 13:58

Thanks @LBB2020 - I looked at Ikea D’Or drawers etc but never even thought about looking at cots for some reason! I’ll have a look 😊

I’m glad you said that @okiedokieme 🤣 I told my DH that if we were going for normal furniture then I wasn’t buying the cot until after baby is here and he thought I was crazy 😂 I just don’t see the point in it sitting gathering dust when it won’t be used for a good few months! I’m due a few weeks before Black Friday so think we might leave a few things that we don’t need right away and see if there’s any bargains to be had 😊

Maybe check this thread out? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/3897517-SHOW-ME-YOUR-NURSERY

I plan on getting a moKee cot, Ikea Bjorksnas drawers and a Poang chair. We already have a built-in wardrobe in the nursery luckily.

DD was in our room till she was over a year old as she just wouldn't sleep in a room by herself. If we ever did it again we'd go for full sized wardrobe and chest of drawers and no rocking chair as they really didn't get any use.

Definitely a cot bed that can be changed as they grow to get more use out of it.

No need for a changing unit, we just changed her where she was, no trekking up and down stairs to a specified unit. Also DD was rolling like crazy by the time she was 12 weeks so it felt safer to change her Ona mat on the floor.

We had plastic storage tubs with nappies, a foldable changing mat, a change of clothes, bum cream and wipes. One downstairs, one in our room and one in the boot of the car. That way we could change her where we were. Stashing a couple of changes of clothes in the boot payed off more than once and we still have spare clothes and plimsolls in the boot now when she's 6 to deal with falls, mud or sudden rain soakings.

Another vote for a cot that becomes a cot bed, we have got a lot of use out of ours. We also had (as part of a set) a wardrobe but have moved it into the spare room as it didn't get much use and it just takes up space.

The chest of drawers had a changing table on top and that (now minus the top piece) has been really useful. It's a good size and I never bothered hanging up clothes. Keeping them all to one set of drawers forces you to clear out when they outgrow things, I found.

I got a nursery set, the VIB walnut set with the sleigh bed, chest of drawers (with changing station on top) and wardrobe. I went for it as I saw it secondhand on ebay for a fraction of the price new.

Currently have it all set up and starting to add clothes. Absolutely adore it. Highly recommend looking at Gumtree and Marketplace.

FilthyforFirth · 29/06/2020 09:19

I got a nursery set, Lawson from Mamas and Papas. I love it and would recommend. DS is nearly 3 and is still using it, it looks brand new. I am due #2 in November and we will be putting it in the nursery. So I think we will get a lot of use out of it. Only replacing the matress.

We will redecorate DS room in a theme of his choosing and he can have an input into furniture etc.

Spam88 · 29/06/2020 09:24

Ours was an Ikea fest:
Gulliver cot
Sundvik changing table (top flips up for it just to become a chest of drawers)
Koppang chest of drawers
Kallax cube storage unit (useful for towels, blankets, random stuff that we were bought for when she was older)
Plus a small clothing rail rather than a wardrobe.

Personally we didn't think a cotbed was worth the extra money compared to a cot, and using a cot meant we had a bit more space in our bedroom.

I wouldn't be without a changing table! Having a baby is hard enough on your back without having to change them on the floor. We still used ours until our daughter was almost 3, and are now using it for our son, and then it'll stay in his room as a chest of drawers, so definitely not a waste of money in my eyes.

mightybuzz · 29/06/2020 09:27

Think through a cotbed - they seem a really good idea, but if you have a second you'll want to move the cot on to baby number 2, so you don't end up using it as a cotbed anyway unless you have a really big gap. They also tend to be awkward sizes for bedding. You'd be better off just having a normal cot and then going straight to a normal size single person bed (rather than a child size bed), you end up wasting a lot less money.

I'm decorating the nursery for DS2 and am reusing the cot from DS1, buying a nice neutral wardrobe that will last, and am going to reuse a chest of drawers from elsewhere in the house. We actually did few nappy changes in DS1's room, we just did them on the floor in other rooms.

Another thing I'm doing differently now is deciding on a 2-colour colour scheme now and buying things only in these colours (accessories, bedding and stuff, not clothes) - I think with DS1 I went a bit wild buying whatever I liked and nothing matches!

I quite like websites like Bobby Rabbit kids, they have room inspiration pictures on there. It's a certain style but you might spot certain accessories that you like that will send you in a certain direction/colour scheme.

It's really nice having a comfy chair you can feed in and read books together in, but make sure it's not too big. At some point you'll want to have lots of playing space in the room!

HarrietM87 · 29/06/2020 09:31

We didn’t do the nursery until DS was about 10/11 months - he was in our room til then and we just used his room as a dumping ground! We have a normal chest of drawers for him now. Got a cot on eBay (£650 new, £35 for us!) then bought a lovely new mattress for it from naturalmat. We had the cheapest Ikea changing table (sniglar I think - £20) in our room for the first few months, but once he could roll it wasn’t safe and we changed him on the floor. I’m pregnant again and won’t bother with changing table this time.

I really don’t see the point in nursery furniture but if you want to get it there is loads second hand - lots of people splash out on it then get rid of it quickly so it’s still in good condition.

Spam88 · 29/06/2020 09:32

Ooh I meant to say we also had a Poang chair (the cheap one, not the rocker, it still has enough bounce in it that you can rock to sleep if needed) with a lack table next to it.

Cherrybakewellard · 29/06/2020 09:34

First baby I spent an obscene amount on the nursery furniture from Mamas and Papas because I thought that's what I was 'meant' to do. The cot frame alone was £800 Blush

Second child under 2 years later, kitted our eldest child's room in Ikea MALM furniture.

Baby 3 6 years later and she was in our room for 6 months in an Ikea cot, she's just moved into her own room and I'm awaiting a delivery today coincidentally of MALM from Ikea.

PrayingandHoping · 29/06/2020 09:35

We have a mamas and papas chest drawers with the changing mat too which can be lifted off when not needed anymore. It's a great piece of kit. Couldn't be without it. We use it for every change
