I have my first scan tomorrow, 7+1 and just wondering what to expect!

I know I need to go with a full bladder... is the recommendation 2 pints an hour before?

Does your letter say you need a full bladder? Doesn’t it recommend a volume?

I never needed a full bladder at any of my NHS scans.

At 7+1 i can’t imagine there’ll be much detail- is it 3/4D? Again with NHS scans that early may be done intra vaginally....

clemmie83 · 25/06/2020 22:44

I'm going to one tomorrow for a gender scan, it should have all the details in your confirmation e-mail. Mine says to drink 2 extra glasses of water a day for the week before to ensure well hydrated, arrive with a full bladder and to bring my hospital notes. Not sure why they require my hospital notes??

Pinktruffle · 25/06/2020 22:45

At 7+1 it's likely it'll be a transvaginal scan so you will need an empty bladder for that. Just incase, drink a pint of water slowly starting about 45 mins before your appointment. If they have it do it transvaginally, you'll be asked to empty your bladder.

I had a scan at 7 + 4 and it was transvaginally.

kkr168 · 25/06/2020 22:46

At 7+1 I would imagine it would be an internal scan, so you would need an empty bladder

Scottishflower · 25/06/2020 22:58

Hello. Not sure if you'll find my experience helpful but thought I would share. We had an amazing first scan experience at wttw on Monday. I realised I had booked the scan very early and kind of regretted it afterwards. I had set my self up after I had received the confirmation email with more info to basically expect to see nothing, or to maybe be lucky with an internal scan. I thought about cancelling but my partner said we had booked it so why not just go and see what happens, so that's what we did. I just didn't go to the toilet about an hour before my appointment. Firstly all of the staff at our wttw were so so so lovely which made the experience even better. It was explained to us again that because I was 6 weeks, there was a chance of not seeing anything. They said they would try on my tummy first and wee baby popped up straight away. We were really lucky and I understand this might not happen for everyone but just to give you an idea of a different experience. We didn't expect it at all and basically everyone said it WOULDN'T Happen that early on without being internal. I hope you have a good experience. Let us know how you get on. X

MinesALatte · 25/06/2020 23:11

Thanks ladies, I’ve trawled my confirmation email and it doesn’t mention about bladders but I took this screenshot when I booked it and it tells me to arrive with a full bladder! Just don’t want to overfill!

@scottishflower that’s so wonderful! Congratulations ☺️ I’m fully prepared to not be as lucky as that 😂

Just go with an open mind and be aware that babies can measure out in early pregnancy, especially if you're not 100% sure when you ovulated.
I had a scan at 7+5 from LMP but baby only measured 6+1.
I'm 33 weeks now and she's fine but I was an anxious mess at the time.
Good luck.

Miss2820 · 26/06/2020 08:47

It will be a internal scan I had the same two weeks ago u don’t need a full bladder they will explain to you when your arrive

SK2970 · 26/06/2020 11:22

Hi, I'm thinking of booking an early scan at nearly 7 weeks. I am seeing a lot saying it would be internal scan so could anybody tell me what happens with that? Is there any risks with it?

Good luck on those having scans today! Biscuit

sel2223 · 26/06/2020 11:27

@SK2970 my first scan ended up being transvaginal and it was absolutely fine. I was expecting it to be like a smear but the 'probe' only goes into the very entrance of the vagina so isn't uncomfortable or painful at all.
There are no risks that I am award of. I'm now 33 weeks.

Charlottejade89 · 26/06/2020 12:24

I had a scan at 9 weeks at wttw in swansea. This was in the height of the lockdown so the procedure might have been abit different but they were all wearing full ppe, so hygienic and they were lovely and professional. I had an internal scan as they couldn't see much abdominal and it was fine. I the probe only goes in a little way so barely felt it. I'm going back again in 2 weeks for a gender scan so me and my partner can find out together

climbingcorfecastle · 26/06/2020 12:29

Honestly why would anyone want to have a scan this early? I'm assuming this is a private scan place and not a medical facility?

emvy · 26/06/2020 12:31

Definitely don’t worry about drinking 2 pints of water!! I drank loads with my very first scan (early, due to bleeding) and they couldn’t even see my Womb because my bladder was so full! So now I just don’t bother. I had another early scan on Wednesday (different pregnancy, again due to bleeding) and they could see baby and heartbeat with the abdominal scan. I didn’t drink any extra water than normal... learnt my lesson there! Since that first time I’ve just drank the normal amount and every scan has been fine. I know not wttw but maybe still useful to know. Good luck!

MinesALatte · 26/06/2020 13:16

Thank you everyone for your comments and advice! So nervous for later, just fearful of if somethings wrong! I have hours to wait still! 😭

@climbingcorfecastle I am having a private early scan due to previous miscarriage, so anxiety is quite high in terms of how it is developing, and the fact that my partner probably won’t be able to attend the NHS scan due to COVID-19 so I want to see our baby for the first time together.

Do you feel like this comment is helpful at all?

Are you really so obtuse that you can't think of a single reason someone may have an early reassurance scan?
Anxiety/worry
Medical history
Miscarriages history
Previous bad experience
Excitement
Wanting their partner to be able to attend
Because they just want to

I went for an early scan today because I suffer from anxiety, I don't feel like I can wait a further 5wks to find out if baby has a heartbeat, I'm in so much shock to find out I'm really pregnant after being discharged from the Infertility Clinic a few months ago with no hope, that I needed to see it with my own eyes and didn't want to go to midwife appointments next week and get my hopes up until I'd had a scan.

Good luck OP! Mine was automatically transvaginal due to only being 7+3 and policy being to do TV under 10wks.

climbingcorfecastle · 26/06/2020 19:38

MaryShelley I was asking a genuine question. I have had recurrent m/c and was referred to an EPG the last time, I am wondering why women are going to what I assumed was a private scan place rather than a medical facility.

Pinktruffle · 26/06/2020 19:43

That wasn't how you worded your question @climbingcorfecastle - it came across as rude and aggressive.

People go to private facilities because the NHS is in the middle of dealing with a pandemic and won't see the vast majority of patients. Even if there weren't an pandemic, every NHS trust has different policies and procedures due to funding and they won't all see people to give them an early scan unless they have administered fertility treatment.

climbingcorfecastle · 26/06/2020 19:58

@Pink I'm sorry if you read this as aggressive and rude, this was not my intention at all and I still can't see that in my post. I added 'honestly' to make it clear it was a genuine question.

MinesALatte · 26/06/2020 20:23

Beyond thrilled to be sharing this!!!
Measuring at 7+4 (my calculations are 7+1)
The staff were wonderful, the minute she said ‘I can see a little baby’ I sobbed and they brought me tissues instantly.

It was found via the tummy but I still took the TV to get a better look

Thank you all for your lovely words!

Quick question - is cramping afterwards normal? Like a feeling of trapped wind?!

OP posts:
emvy · 26/06/2020 21:52

Congratulations @MinesALatte! Wonderful news! So happy for you.

Yes I always feel a little cramping after a scan! Even after midwife has poked and prodded bump much later in pregnancy to determine the position of baby. I figure a lot is happening in there and any intervention of any kind just makes it a bit more sensitive.

sel2223 · 26/06/2020 21:56

Great news OP. Congratulations
