I just had a call from my hospital, they said when I had my 12 Week scan and bloods the bloods have come back with a UTI (I have had no symptoms)

I am freaking out as she wants to
Put me on antibiotics ASAP, of course, but it's saying that there is a increased risk of miscarriage. How severe is the risk? I had a healthy scan on Monday for my 12 weeks and now I am full with fear. Am I going to lose the baby because of this? :(

Highly unlikely - this happens a lot. I had the same call after my booking in apt at 8 weeks (like you, no symptoms) and ummed and aaahed about taking the antibiotics for a few days, but in the end what convinced me was my GP’s view that these antibiotics have been proscribed and researched a lot in pregnant women and proved safe, whereas an untreated uti had a lot more evidence of leading to miscarriage.

Fwiw, that baby is currently 7 months old and trying to hit me with a maraca, so i made the right choice Smile

The infection won't go away by itself and could get a lot worse. The risks must be extremely low, particularly if you are in the second trimester. Try not to stress about it.

The real risk is if it's left untreated. It's so common op so try not to stress to much.

Thanks all. My hospital have arranged for me to collect the prescription this evening, so I'll be on it tonight. A doctor even called me to reassure me as another midwife I spoke to could hear my distress. Hopefully all will be well ❤️

The risk of not taking anything and developing a womb infection is worse than the tiny risk associated with pregnancy.

I'm 33 weeks and, so far this pregnancy had had antibiotics 3 times for a UTI, a gum infection and a grumbling appendicitis!

Umberta · 26/06/2020 11:29

You have to take the antibiotics. They made a mistake and didn't give me antibiotics for my uti and it got worse and could have triggered early labour. I had to rush to labour ward at only 32 weeks. The pain was completely unbelievable.
Take the antibiotics.

Brieminewine · 26/06/2020 11:49

I had a UTI at 20 weeks and was given cephalexin and I was fine. It’s much more dangerous not to treat.

KateJ59 · 26/06/2020 11:50

Thanks all

And @Umberta I think I may have written this down wrong.

I am not concerned about taking the antibiotics- I have also taken co amoxiclav a few times and have been fine. I am more scared about the fact it could have been sitting in my body for longer than it should untreated and I had no clue as I had no symptoms.

I am on antibiotics now already 2 down, I got it yesterday. Would I know by now or something else as seriously wrong?

I am so so sorry that happened to you Umberta - I hope everything was ok in the end? X

@KateJ59 thank you for asking, yes thank goodness my baby was fine and my cervix was closed when they examined me. (I find vaginal examinations really distressing but that's another story haha). Once I was on the antibiotics, the painful contractions gradually eased up... at their worst I was having multiple pains per hour, then it was just like once per hour, then just a few times per day. It's only like once or twice a day now. But at their worst they were ever so painful, I've read that it can be as bad as labour (ftm so I don't know what labour is like).
Don't worry that you'll get it again and not know, that's one of the reasons why they do such frequent urine checks on you.
