Summer baby newborn clothes- what to buy!?!!

Hi there,

I'm a FTM and my little one is due in late August. We live in London, so I'm already preparing for a very hot third trimester!! But it's also got me thinking about what clothes I really need for baby when she arrives.. Can anyone who's had a summer baby give any advice on what is absolutely essential to buy in newborn size and 0-3 months?! I'm trying not to buy too much as I'm aware she'll grow out of it so quickly but would appreciate some advice from other mums.

Thanks :)

short sleeved body suits like these

paired with bloomers like these

and a sunhat if you are going outside

congratulations!

sorry the bloomers I linked above start from 0-3, so for newborn ones try here

(they are unisex since they don't come with the bow)

If its hot then all they really need is short sleeved vests or sort sleeved rompers (baby gros with not arms or legs)!

Teacaketotty · 24/06/2020 14:53

Short sleeve rompers are great, or just a vest - keep it simple and easy to put on and take off! I had DD last August and bought 2 packs of short rompers from Next which are lovely and as easy as a sleepsuit to change. I wouldn’t mess around with fancy outfits or dresses personally!

Good luck x

Following as I’m expecting my little boy in August.

They still have to come home from the hospital wrapped up though am I right?

ALC1985 · 24/06/2020 18:12

My dd1 was born in the heatwave of 2018, she wore shortly sleeve vests and romper suits, everything else had to be returned as she never got to wear them! Keep it simple and buy lots of vests oh and sun hats as another poster mentioned oh and lots of factor 50!

Sanch1 · 24/06/2020 21:50

@BabyG08 why? Not if it's hot! A baby overheating is the worse thing, they are better too cool.

BabyG08 · 25/06/2020 06:05

@Sanch1 just what I’ve read on here I suppose, I’m a ftm so I have no idea 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve read that midwives expect them to be taken home in a hat/cardi regardless of the weather.

mynameiscalypso · 25/06/2020 06:08

We had a lot of rompers for DS last year and they were great. It's not always hot in August though - it was cold and wet the day he was born and he came home from the hospital in a hat, socks and a cardigan as it was so miserable!

Amichelle84 · 25/06/2020 06:59

I'm due in late August too and London based (hope you are coping ok in this heat)!

I've still tried to cover everything without going mad, we live in England after all and it might not be hot every day.

I've bought some vests with no sleeves, vests with short sleeves, baby grows, 1 cardigan, 2 cotton hats.

For blankets I've bought some large muslins.

firstimemamma · 25/06/2020 07:12

Vests (short and long sleeved), sleepsuits, scratch mitts and hats are all that's needed imo and I had my baby in August 2018.

The advice is hat for the journey home. Ds also wore vest and sleep suit but I can't remember if we had a blanket too, I don't think I so.

Don't forget to buy a few bits in tiny baby size as u really do never know! My niece didn't fit into any of her newborn stuff and it was completely unexpected so they had to panic buy which was stressful.

Good luck! Smile

Sanch1 · 25/06/2020 07:53

@BabyG08 sorry I shouldnt have been so abrupt. Both mine were born when it was super hot and went home in short sleeved vests. I was mega disappointed as I'd bought lovely over the top 'going home' outfits and it was pointless!

SparkyBlue · 25/06/2020 07:53

It will be so hard to judge as sometimes the weather changes and it can get a bit chilly. Someone upthread mentioned factor 50 but you shouldn't put suncream on a brand new baby. You need to keep them out of the sun and in the shade at all times. Definitely lots of short sleeved vests as either way you will get lots of use for them. They can be worn under clothes or just used as clothes if it's very very warm. Also remember that by August the shops will be full of Autumn/winter stuff so be prepared and have a few lighter outfits bought
