Disposable or reusable breast pads?

Hi

I'm completely new to breastfeeding and would like to try it when daughter is born in August.

What is best to buy please, reusable or disposable ones? And what are the best brands to buy?

Thank you

Personally I much prefer the reusable ones. Disposable ones have a sticky strip on the back to stick them to your bra, and I find they just get tangled and and up sticking to themselves/your boob!

Caspianberg · 24/06/2020 11:43

I much prefer the reusable. Bought the lanisoh reusable ones.
Its easier to take them out to feed, as the disposable kind of stick in bra and stay in the way. I find the disposable feel like some manky old wet tissue also as soon as wet!

Reusable - I have little lambs ones. Never used anything else, but these are very absorbent. Downside is they are more expensive than lansinoh and take a while to dry (due to being made of bamboo, which makes them super absorbent). I don’t leak too much, so only use one pad a day.

Bleepers · 24/06/2020 13:57

100% reusable. I bought some lovely bamboo ones and they were so comfy. Hated the disposables the few times I used them, plus they're bad for the environment.

Get the biggest size!

babbaganoush · 24/06/2020 14:07

Reusable 100%. They are so much more comfortable and absorbent. And obviously better for the environment.

LolaLollypop · 24/06/2020 14:10

Definitely the washable, reusable ones. I used disposables with DC1 and got a horrible eczema type rash on my boobs Angry
4 months in with DC2 and no problems with the Asda washable ones so far.

It's a good few years ago now, but I used Lilypadz which are reusable non-absorbent silicon things. They were amazing!

KindKylie · 24/06/2020 14:20

Reusable when established but near in mind that you can't use reusable with some of the ointments. I trashed some bamboo ones by using lansinoh on them.

YellowToucan · 24/06/2020 14:22

Reusable most of time. Disposable overnight as don't slip/get lost when fiddling around in dark, plus less likely to need to change them. Also disposable if particularly heavy leakage and/or wouldn't be able to change the pad for a long while as reusable are very uncomfortable when wet through (and also then leaks through into clothes).
Not all brands of disposable are equal. You want Lansinoh in the purple box as they have two sticky strips and are very effective. They are hideously overpackaged though.

em90792 · 24/06/2020 14:23

Also.vote for reusable. The disposable get warm and give me a rash, and I dont leak much and changed often. I dont think they are hugely breathable x

Seeline · 24/06/2020 14:31

I would get disposable to start with just to see if you actually need them. I bf both mine and never leaked with either.

Twizbe · 24/06/2020 14:44

I've never used them despite feeding 2 kids. I don't leak.

I'd say buy one pack of disposables for immediate use and to see if you need them. If you don't the disposable ones are easier to sell on.

sel2223 · 24/06/2020 14:52

I've gone for both.

A couple of packs of disposable ones for the very beginning when I'm sore and knackered and everything is new and overwhelming then reusable bamboo pads for the longer term

MerryDeath · 24/06/2020 14:55

i hate the disposable ones. the glue always ends up on my boob. reusable ones are cheap and available on amazon and other, more moral, places.

Lottie37 · 24/06/2020 15:04

Ok so reusable looks a good option

Any particular brand ladies?

Thank you x

I think I just used Boots own brand

TheFluffiestCat · 24/06/2020 15:14

I had cheapy bamboo ones from Amazon. So much softer on sore nipples than the disposables.

Espoleta · 24/06/2020 15:18

Another vote for reusable. The disposable ones are like sandpaper on the nipples

crazychemist · 24/06/2020 17:39

I had Lasinoh disposable ones to start with I was very leaky for a week or two after milk came in, so would have needed a tonne of reusable ones the amount I had to change them!) Can’t remember what brand of reusable ones I had later (when less leaky)

gigi556 · 24/06/2020 17:46

Reusable. I had the little lamb ones, but honestly I imagine they are all much the same. The imse vimse ones look pretty good.

happymummy12345 · 24/06/2020 17:50

I just got Tesco disposable ones. Didn't have a problem at all. I exclusively formula fed and my milk dried up within a few weeks so didn't need that many.

UsedUpUsername · 24/06/2020 17:54

Disposables. The reusables were scratchy and did not hold as much milk. If you are away from home, you might have a sopping wet, milky pad in your diaper bag or purse. Unpleasant and they start to smell if you can’t be home in a hurry.

They also won’t shift around in your bra as much.

UsedUpUsername · 24/06/2020 17:56

Avoid the cheapie disposables though and go for Avent or Lansinoh.

Tesco disposables are cheap but so poorly made.

firstimemamma · 24/06/2020 18:04

Boots reusables. I breastfed for over 16 months and never had any issues. The disposables are wasteful imo.

NicAndNick · 24/06/2020 19:17

I've got the hot milk and close pop in ones.

They both seem fine, the hot milk ones are softer but both fit and dont slip.
