Late pregnancy confirmation

Hi all,

I found out last week that I am pregnant which is exciting and welcome news. However, based on my dates I am ten weeks already. I had an implantation bleed for four days which I mistook for a period (which have been all over the place anyway recently), so only took a test when I thought I was late for what would have been my next period.

I have registered with the hospital and gp straightaway but waiting to hear back from both. I am so worried that I have put my baby in a bad position because I haven’t had any check ups yet Or that I will have missed things. (Don’t drink or smoke and was taking folic acid but have been behaving normally apart from that and am also overweight and late thirties).

Has anyone else discovered their pregnancy later on than usual and how was it with catching up on appointments etc? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, thanks so much.

Congratulations!
You won't have missed any checks at 10 weeks - things don't get going until 12 weeks.

Thank you! Am a natural worrier and way out of comfort zone, the doctors surgery just told me it all had to be done through the hospital so it’s reassuring to know I am still ok on time even if it takes them a few days to process my registration.

I'm a worrier too :) You've handily missed out on 6 weeks of worrying though. Also taking folic acid, not drinking and not smoking sounds fine and is about all I did when I had my now teenager.
You have maybe missed out on morning sickness? I did too and that's a definite plus.

Skipping a chunk of the worry is a good way to look at it Smile

I have had quite bad nausea on and off (day and night!) for the last three weeks but I think I was partly scared to believe I could be pregnant as we have been trying for a while and I didn’t dare to be disappointed. So I waited until I thought I was late for my period to test. Also have been in quite a stressful position at work so was putting it down to that .

Was a relief in one way to find out I was and that it was down to something normal!

I found out at just over 10 weeks, I have PCOS so missing periods are nothing new for me. I'm now 25 weeks and he's fine.
My GP referred me straight away for a scan so they checked on location etc then i had the 12 weeks scan two weeks later.
I don't drink but id been doing heavy lifting and eating things like pate, but his development is perfect.
I've found it a bonus not knowing. I lost a whole trimester of worry!

sel2223 · 23/06/2020 11:14

Seriously, don't worry.
I found out around 5 or 6 weeks but didn't have my first booking in appt until between 9 snd 10 weeks.
The dating scan and screening tests can be done between 11 and 14 weeks so still plenty of time to fit everything in.
Some women don't even know they're pregnant till they're giving birth!

LoveSunshine01 · 23/06/2020 11:23

You lucky duck! The first few weeks were hard for me symptom wise, sounds like you've skipped the awkward and boring bit and can move straight on to the first scan and nicer 2nd trimester.

All I had before 10 weeks was a chat with my midwife over the phone at the 8 week booking in appt (which I had at 9 weeks anyway). That was just taking medical records and giving some general advice, you've barely missed anything.

Sounds like you've been doing everything you need would have if you knew anyway - I would just check the dietary recommendations on the NHS website if you haven't already. My midwife stressed not to worry too much if you break the rules occasionally so don't worry if you've eaten something on the avoid list.

During covid in my area they've been doing all blood tests at the 12 week scan and there's no problem with doing them then rather than at the traditional 8 weeks.

Congratulations!!!

Thank you all so much, your replies are really reassuring. We haven’t told our families yet, so it’s hard not having anyone close to ask. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

@LoveSunshine01 I think I have gotten off lightly with the symptoms! Nausea has been unpleasant but not terrible and only intermittent. My sister was throwing up for seven months when she had her little boy!

I found out at what could've been 14 weeks but turned out to be 9 weeks (after dating scans). I have PCOS so very irregular periods, but thought my breasts were changing and felt nauseous. Put the breast changes down to weird PCOS hormones, and the nausea down to this medication I'd just started (for another unrelated pre-existing condition). After a couple of weeks I thought I'd stop the meds to see if the nausea improved. It didn't so I did a test, and voila!

We ended up panicking and booking a private scan because the student midwife who did my booking in appointment indicated that it might be weeks before I got an NHS scan appointment, and obviously with possibly already being 14 weeks that was a concern for me! However, the NHS were on it (for possibly the only time in my pregnancy so far....Hmm) and offered me an appointment two days after my private scan (I rescheduled it on the advice of the private scan - they said the NHS scan needed to be done between 12-14 weeks and because I was measuring 9 weeks that there was no point doing it yet).

So my point is don't worry about being 10 weeks, as long as you get your scan between 12-14 weeks you should be fine - and my experience is that they can get this sorted at short notice if needs be. You might end up not being as far along as you thought too.

TBH that waiting game between finding out and feeling its acceptable to tell people your news is bad enough when it was just a few weeks - I can't imagine how hard it is for people who find out really early on!

Foreverbaffled · 23/06/2020 18:25

As everyone has said you have zero to worry about :) Huge congratulations!! Those early weeks are so fragile (in terms of anxiety) and you’ve bypassed them all, hoorah. You can have your booking in appointment and bloods now if necessary, nothing you’ve done or not done will have harmed the baby.

IDK2020 · 24/06/2020 09:57

@lumpydaisy @Foreverbaffled yes, I think I am lucky in a way to have skipped the early worry. Am dying to tell my family so it would have been hard to have already had several weeks of this!

The pregnancy gods were obviously laughing at me for saying the nausea wasn’t too bad as have been throwing up this morning Hmm

Since posting, both the midwife team and my gp have been in touch. Both were very reassuring and my booking in appointment is scheduled for Friday so feeling a lot better. I also have a blood issue which the gp was very knowledgable and kind about so I am feeling less worried.

Thanks for all the reassurance ladies!
