Laxatives?

Are there are mild laxatives suitable for use in pregnancy?

I'm 40+1 and keep getting all excited that the pains / discomfort are the start of labour but it's always just wind and constipation.

I've increased fruit, veg, whole meal and water over the last week but it's not made any difference. I'm on iron tablets, which do make constipation worse but it's not normally this uncomfortable.

Is there anything I can take safely? Obviously I don't want to risk anything that could cause problems.

You can take all normal laxatives in pregnancy too. Also - try cutting the iron pills down to every second day, they absorb just as well esp if taken with a glass of OJ. Hopefully it’s labour soon!

Lactulose is safe in pregnancy. Ask your GP xx

Dulcoease stool softening tablets are excellent, work slowly and v gentle. They aren’t spasmodic x

I was prescribed fybogel with my iron tablets when pregnant

I am in the same position, albeit not as far along, and have been prescribed CosmoCol
It's a sachet mixed with water up to 6 times a day and a one in the morning with my weetabix and one at night before dinner seems to be doing to trick

Lactulose is so sweet and makes me sick

Glycerin suppositories are safe to use during pregnancy and will work the quickest! Otherwise, Docusate is also safe but takes a bit longer to help pass :) Lactulose is safe but will take around 3 days to have an affect.

Lactulose is completely safe and highly recommended. Even if you're not constipated now, labour will likely dehydrate you. You don't want to have to strain for your first post birth poo.

Fybogel / lactulose
