Folic acid supplements are really important to prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida so you should take 400 micrograms a day until the end of the first trimester. You may need a higher dose prescribed by your GP is you have a high BMI. 10 micrograms of Vitamin D is also recommended in pregnancy to help with bone development. As far as other vitamins are concerned they are not essential but they they won’t do any harm as long as you stick to ones that are designed to take in pregnancy.

Obviously I wouldn't recommend it because I am NOT a medical professional but I haven't taken any vitamins throughout my pregnancy and I was awful at remembering to take the folic acid too!

I'm now 38 weeks with a healthy baby but like I said, I'm not medical so would advise that you speak to your midwife of GP

Please make sure you take folic acid if you are ttc or pregnant. I didn't take it and unfortunately had a baby diagnosed with spina bifida. As pp said you also need vitamin D for bone development. Taking these supplements is perfectly safe.

There is a link between low folate levels and miscarriage. Take folic acid!

Oh my goodness, no. I’m sorry for your miscarriage but it’s irresponsible to blame it on the folic acid. It's recommended that you take:

400 micrograms of folic acid every day – from before you're pregnant until you're 12 weeks pregnant
This is to reduce the risk of problems in the baby's development in the early weeks of pregnancy.

I did take folic acid and still got pregnant with a baby with spina bifida and severe brain disfigurement. Giving birth to a baby to let it die in the second trimester is a traumatic nightmare. Please take the folic acid, you really, really don't want to go through what I did while knowing it could actually be your fault.

Now pregnant while taking a orescribed enormous doses of folic acid and this one seems healthy.

Taking folic acid does not cause miscarriages. I think it might be a good idea to have a chat with your midwife about this.

Sounds like you have a lot of anxiety in general (the thrush cream is totally fine also btw) - understandable post miscarriage but it’s going to make things pretty tough for you if you’re questioning every single thing that happens for the next several weeks. Perhaps have a chat with your midwife or your GP about your general feelings? Might be useful to talk about your previous miscarriage and try to settle some of those thoughts around what’s caused it - it definitely was not the folate as PP have said. Congratulations on your pregnancy and all the best!
