Breathing monitors

Hi!

Any advice on breathing monitors please? With my first two, I had those mats that went under the mattress. 6 years on from my youngest and times have changed!

I didn’t realise until I started looking that you can get monitors that clip on to the nappy.

Any experiments of these?

I just want a monitor for the breathing really - I don’t want video or sound as I don’t leave them alone when sleeping and if I did, the house is so small you can hear eventhing!

I’ve ordered the owlet which is a little Velcro sock

I'm following this thread! I'm considering buying a Snuza Pico, would anyone recommend? I was looking at the owlet but it's so expensive here (we live abroad and need to order that from the US).

Connie222 · 21/06/2020 11:29

@SunStruck I was looking at that this morning. But the clip seemed huge.

I know the clip ones would have annoyed the hell out of my two by four months. So I’m really hesitant.

I’ve been looking at the more modern sensor pads too - the baby sense one looks good.

I’d love the owl sock one - but eye wateringly expensive!

@Connie222 oh really! I thought it looked small in the picture (the new pica - I think the old one is called Snuza hero!).

I've heard that with the Mats you'll have to turn it off before picking the baby up, and I can see ourselves forgetting at night for instance. Leading to loud false alarms. like the thought of the Snuza because you don't have to turn it off when you pick the baby up, only when you change the diaper or if you're up and about anyway.

I have the sensor mat and Snuza hero. Stays on the nappy really well.

SunStruck · 21/06/2020 12:42

@SpillTheTeaa thanks, do you recommend the Snuza?

Connie222 · 21/06/2020 12:45

@SunStruck yes it can get annoying remembering to turn them off!

We have the owlet sock and the Snuza hero for various reasons and I much prefer the snuza. At 10 months she doesn’t seem to even notice it’s on.

SunStruck · 21/06/2020 13:28

@Lou573 thanks that was very helpful! 😄 such a big price difference too!

I've ordered the Snuza Hero MD (couldn't even find any of the other models for sale). I went with with as it was one mentioned on the Lullaby Trusts monitors info sheet. I did consider the owlet but it wasn't discussed by the Lullaby Trusts. A lot of people in a group I'm on swear by it but for the price I believe it's no better than the Owlet. The Lullaby Trusts do however state any monitor doesn't reduce overall risk of SIDS but can be used for reassurance and for that reason I went with £80 rather than £220.

Connie222 · 21/06/2020 17:30

@FirstTimeBumps yes, none of them reduce the risk of SIDS, but I would rather be alerted within 20 seconds of my baby stopping breathing rather than god forbid, finding them in the morning. At least it gives you the chance to get the breathing again quickly or to get help.

I remember having that argument with a HV years ago when 18 was a baby. She didn’t see the point in a sensor mat and couldn’t see my point that I’d rather know ASAP if something was wrong. She thought I was being over anxious for using one and tried to diagnose PND just on that basis (she was very odd though and I got rid of HVs entirely after that second visit!)

@Connie222 I suffered with awful postnatal anxiety that caused me to sleep walk with my little boy (now 17 months). I feel the same as you with regards to early alerting (it's how the lullaby trust said parents felt in general as well) and if anything stops the sleep walking or at least eases it then I'll buy it x
