I'm planning on going on Mat Leave 11 weeks before my DD. This is due to working nights on a 46hour contract and already experiencing oedema in my ankles and legs (diagnosed by the Doc). I've also had a wealth of other health issues with this pregnancy after a completely healthy first pregnancy!! I'm only 17.5 weeks, so I'm dreading how bad things might get before I leave at 29 weeks so was considering asking for a reduction in my contracted hours. Has anyone else had to do this? My job is risky as it is and I haven't had an updated risk assessment in over 6 weeks.

You're entitled to a pregnancy specific RA. If they find risks they should make modifications to your work and if they can't they have to suspend you on full pay. You can only be forced to take early maternity leave if a pregnancy related illness occurs in the four weeks before your due date. I understand you're considering taking it yourself and not being forced however you are entitled if you wish to continue working in a safe environment if you wish. If your employer is failing to cooperate with completing a risk assessment of suggest contacting ACAS or Maternity Action for further support.
