Sudden weight gain - preeclampsia?

Hello,

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had similar experience...

I have been gaining weight fairly gradually since beginning of my pregnancy and of course the weight has speed up a lot during the last couple of months... I am 35 weeks now and during the last week I put one 2kg all in a go! I remember this can be sign of pre-eclampsia or other complications so I was wondering if anyone has any experience of sudden increases like this one? I will mention it to my midwife but my next appointment is in 2 weeks time so I just wonder if I should get checked out before then or if this can be something simple like water retention?

Baby packs on a massive amount of weight right now. So could be combination of fluids, baby, time you weighed yourself.

If you're worried you could get a check up, I'm sure they would check. All Antenatal care is as normal even with covid19.

Congratulations! So exciting you'll meet your little one soon! 💓

It’s impossible to say
When I developed (mild) PE at about 34 weeks I think there were no signs but in retrospect my hands and ankles were a bit swollen

Have you just put on weight or are you swollen? Do you have any of the other symptoms? Headache that won't shift with tablets, aversion to light...
Have you taken your blood pressure?

It’s just the weight really, I mean my face is puffier but my ankles and feet and hands are ok, no headaches nor sight issues... I mean apart from that I feel well...my Bp was ok when I saw the midwife last time but that was 2 weeks ago so I guess that doesn’t matter...maybe I’ll give them a call on Monday just to see what they suggest I do...

@DiddlySquatty sorry if I ask, did you have to be induced then or what sort of treatment did you get?

It was a good few years ago now but I was admitted for a few days for tests etc and then allowed home as my BP responded to medication and came down.
If I remember rightly I had twice weekly day assessment unit appointments to monitor BP and protein in urine, another spike at ?36 wks nearly induced but settled again with another admission and more meds and daily outpatient monitoring. Booked for induction at 39 wks as growth scans showed IUGR then she turned up of her own accord on the day induction was booked!
Was little (5lb7 at 39 wks) but otherwise fine.
BP settled after about 2 wks post natally but needed meds in that time.

2 subsequent pregnancies, no full blown pre eclampsia but pregnancy induced hypertension and increased monitoring in both.

In subsequent pregnancies I had a BP monitor at home (cheap from amazon) which was invaluable as if I had a slight headache or just felt ‘off’ I could check my own Bp to reassure myself. Once I did that and it had gone up quite a lot.

The first time I did not have a headache or anything.
Was v surprised at appt when Bp was high and protein in my urine and they sent me straight to hosp.

OP, NHS usually will monitor you closely and induce if the risk is high. I was flag as high risk to get it, and they adopted a wait and see approach. Nothing ever happened but I had extra scans and checks with a consultant, to ensure any risk was managed.

Definitely go see your midwife if you're worried. I know it's tempting to buy your own BP stuff but the midwife should be happy to do it, save your money. Your baby will cost you plenty xx

Thank you everyone for your replies! I definitely am going to ask them just in case...you know how they say, better safe than sorry!

I had preeclampsia with my eldest, it was mild and I was aware of it for a couple of weeks.

When I went to my check up at 37 weeks my blood pressure was over 170 so I got sent to hospital (also had protein in urine). I wae induced that night. I had also had a couple of episodes of light spots in my eyes a couple of weeks before.

You feel well in yourself, I noticed my feet were swollen and I could no ok get wear my wedding rings. If I hadn’t gone to the midwife I would never have known.

I was classed as having severe preeclampsia at hospital that night, not to scare you but it creeps up so suddenly so I would definitely mention it.
