Sweep!

I have had several reduced movements episodes and thus was advised an induction at 39 weeks. I agreed but now doubting that’s what I want so asked midwife to give me sweep at 38+4. It’s my first baby so just wanted advice and/or whether a sweep worked for you ☺️

Not a fan of sweeps unless really ready - my consultant said there's a small window when they work. One worry is cord prolapse though if the baby's head isnt fully engaged - neither midwives or junior doctors mentioned or thought about this for my child who was hardly engaged at all and often floated away so do ask questions as coed prolapse can be harmful or worse

I had four sweeps with my first baby. I think the first was the day before she was due and the last the night before she arrived. She was 40+5.

I had no idea they carried risks re the cord. Might look into it before having another sweep (I'm pregnant again).

I had a sweep last week at 38+4
This is my first baby, I'm currently still bouncing on the exercise ball 😂 i jad a bit cramping and back ache and have lost mucus on and off bit pains have not progressed.
I was already 2cm dilated before my sweep MW told me and cervix very favourable so really thought it would move things along.
The sweep itself was fine
I willl just say dont get your hopes up like i did

I had 4. Don’t think they worked. At my first I got excited as the consultant said I looked ready to go and probably wouldn’t make it to my next appointment. I did lol mine were recommended by my consultant. They were fine. I know they work for a lot of people. Or else it’s just coincidence. Who knows. If I was pregnant again and offered I’d still probably have one. Or a few

@Zoey92 out of interest how come they did a sweep before you were due? I was under the impression it was something that was done after your due date?

I had a sweep at 1pm when I was 40+1. By 5.20pm DD was here (born in the bath at home, delivered by DP!). The midwife said I was already 3cm dilated so the sweep may have helped things along but I think she was on her way anyway.

I had a sweep at 40+6 at 3pm. From about 6pm onwards I had what felt like mild period pains, from around 3am I had mild cramps. They became more pronounced mild contractions and I went to the birth centre as they were 3 mins apart where I was catergorically told I wasn't having my baby yet because I could still walk and talk (I have a v high pain threshold) but she'd look anyway, announced I was 2cm dilated and I had a long way to go so sent me home - took me 15 mins to get home. By the time I was home they'd become really strong so we turned round and went back to the birth centre I sat down to be examined, my waters went and my baby arrived 20 mins later.

The midwife who first examined me came to see me afterwards and apologised for not taking me seriously as apparently ftm's don't normally have super speedy births like that.... Also told me that if I went on to have anymore I need to make midwives aware of how fast my daughter was born 😂 sort of figures she was born so quickly becuse nearly 3 years in she's still a whirlwind!
