Unknowingly used a broken microwave

Hey all
Have exhausted google and can’t find much so thought I would ask here as I’m losing my mind. I’m 5w3 pregnant and don’t often use our microwave (oh does, every other day or so) but today I used it for the first time in about 6 months. As soon as I turned it on it made a weird sound (I used it for 6 minutes all together). I stayed in the kitchen which is quite small - I messaged oh and asked if the microwave is ok and he said it should be fine as he used it yesterday. Anyway afterwards I noticed the door is slightly sagging. It closes but the edges don’t meet perfectly. It’s quite hard to even see at first - anyway since then I’ve had headache and nausea but I’m not sure if it’s me working myself up. I feel silly asking but everything I’ve read online suggests using a microwave with a broken door is dangerous but only for baby but me too. Any advice?

Quite cruel of you to be putting nasty and trolling comments!

I know how stressful you will feel and probably are working yourself up. I was the same when pregnant with DC2. Was convinced I could smell gas. DH couldn't but my cousin agreed with me so paid for has to be checked and all was fine. After gas man left my cousin said she couldn't smell anything but was sticking up for me in front of DH! Wish she had just told me truth and saved me £80!

You’ll be fine. I know it’s hard not to overly worry in the beginning, but trust me, it will be a very very long 9 months if you don’t relax a bit x

I think you need to take a deep breath and chill out a bit op. Like pp said, it's going to be a very long 9 months for you if you don't. I recommend getting some help with your anxiety at this time

From a scientific point, microwaves travel in waves in a given direction. Even if the door was slightly open only a small amount would get out and travel in a direct like from the gap. Any microwave radiation would not fill the entire room anyway. From a non scientific point, put a mobile phone inside the microwave, close the door and try calling it from another phone (don't microwave your phone though!). You shouldn't be able to connect to the phone indicating how well insulated the phone inside the microwave is.

Microwave radiation just causes the molecules in your food (and in your body if you were exposed to it) to vibrate and the energy heats them up so it's not like x-ray/gamma which breaks down molecules.

Hope this reassures you somewhat 😊 xx

What do you think will have happened to both you and your baby?

Sounds like you need to visit the GP

Try not to worry. The microwaves cause water molecules to excite. If you had been exposed to microwave radiation, you would have felt an immediate excruciating burning sensation. There are no long term radiation effects, as posted previously it is not the type of radiation to cause damage to DNA. I would get a new microwave, and try to put it out of your mind. Headaches and nausea are normal signs of pregnancy anyway so I wouldn't attribute it to exposure to microwaves.
