Hi, Iv recently started a new job and not long found out I'm pregnant... how do you help to keep appointments under wraps from your boss when you need to book the time off until your ready to tell them? It's a tricky one with covid because not a lot of open to help with white lies! 🙈 in normal circumstances i would of probably told my previous manager but this is a very different situation as Iv VERY new in the role...

I'd tell them. You're more protected when you have it on record that you're pregnant.

CWF123 · 16/06/2020 15:00

@ratethesenames more protected ... what do you mean?

Tell them it's a dental appointment? Those can be repeated a couple of times due to work needed being done. Physiotherapy is also a good excuse.

I'm not in tge UK though so check first if tgey are doing treatments.

You legally have to be given time off for appointments. And any pregnancy related sickness can't be counted into your sickness record.

Get them arranged for the start/end/lunch time of your day or take holiday if you don’t want people to know.

At the moment, you might not see anyone face to face until your 12 week appointment (it varies from trust to trust) with earlier appointments being done over the phone. Much easier to schedule with discretion that way!

I've used "dental appointment" as an excuse. Depending on where you are dentists may not be doing routine appointments but necessary procedures are still going ahead, not that anyone at work asked any questions. Otherwise I've just booked days off to coincide with scans.

Onekidnoclue · 16/06/2020 15:36

I booked time off until I was happy to tell people. I appreciate being more protected but it depends on your HR team. Mine is terrible and I wanted to tell work as late as possible.

KRoo22 · 16/06/2020 15:37

Book leave and/or tell them it’s a doctors appointment until you are ready to tell them. If you are in the UK you will have appointments at 8,,12,16 and 20 weeks. After that you definitely need to be telling them.

Hi All,

Thanks for the help below in a normal situation if I would of been with the company a while I'd of told my manage but it's because I have literally just started the job and just found out and now I'm like what the hell 🙈 it says on the NSH you legally don't need to tell your employer until 15 weeks before you due date but I think I'm most cases they will notice a bump 😂 I plan to tell them around 20 weeks when I know for sure things are going okay unless I end up having a massive bump before as I'm only petite so it could become prominent!
Dental is a good one as they have just re opened!

If you tell them you are entitled to paid time off for the appointment and travel to and from the appointment.
At my work place any other appointments it is unpaid time/you can make it over the next week. So in that regard it was a benefit my company knowing especially as I had about 3 appointments in 10 days around 12 weeks.

CWF123 · 16/06/2020 15:54

As I'm on a probation period I want to prove myself at work first because it's a long probation and want them to keep me on... I think I'll just go with the dental option for now and see how things go over next few weeks.

UTIs and gynaecology appointments are good covers as no one will ask any about them
