Viability scan?

When have you had, or having, your viability scans? And is it internal or ultrasound?

I lose my son two years ago as he came early and died. So I'm losing my mind already.
With my boy I had a scan at 6 weeks and we saw a heartbeat.

I'm under two excellent consultants who told me when I got pregnant I could have weekly scans from 6 weeks. However due to COVID that's out the window. They want me to wait until 7 weeks.

I was also promised US but they are saying internal.

Just wondered what others are thinking or have done it what their hospitals have said the them?

Also my husband isn't allowed in. Which is hard but I'll take it. X

6 weeks (IVF), internal. Couldn't care less about internal scans and I am otherwise not good at all about smears etc. They really are fine.

I had weekly/twice weekly scans from 6 weeks and was more reassured by internals until about 8/9 weeks. It was fine after that.

I had a scan at about 8/9 weeks to reassure me. We saw his heartbeat and it was an internal scans. The rest of my additional scans were later in my pregnancy so were not internal.

I had a private abdominal viability scan at 7 weeks and an NHS vaginal scan at 9 weeks due to a haemorrhage. I'd had a missed miscarriage not long before so was very anxious in early pregnancy. The vaginal scan was fine, not uncomfortable at all. Luckily everything was fine on both occasions - I now have a beautiful 11 week old girl snoring on me :)

How far along are you?

passthemustard · 15/06/2020 15:58

You might not be guaranteed a heartbeat before 7 weeks so my clinic recommends 7 weeks onwards. Early scans are usually vaginally as they offer a better view.

Internal at 7 weeks, external at 10/12/20 weeks.

Good luck Flowers

What do you want out of the scan? Because they're right that 7 weeks (or even 8) would be a better choice because you might see a heartbeat then. Having a scan too early without a heartbeat will only make you more worried.

What is your problem with an internal scan? Is it mentally or physically or just because you don't know what to expect? Is it something you can discuss beforehand to make it easier for you?

Thank you to you all.

I don't want to scare those that are pregnant but less poking about down there the better due to errors made when my son died.

I don't mind internal scans at all usually. I've had many with previous ivf and investigations. I mind now I'm pregnant. I want to avoid them unless absolutely necessary.

I think Cos I had a US scan at 6 weeks with my son and saw a heartbeat I don't get why they are saying different now.

I'm only 5 weeks. X

6+6 post ivf with sky high beta hCG levels on blood tests; initially told it would be tv but, when we went for scan, sonography said he’d try abdominal first and then do tv if unable to see sufficiently. Abdominal was fine and they were able to complete all measurements and we got to hear 2 healthy heartbeats. Twins now almost 10 months old!

kikibo · 15/06/2020 17:16

In Germany it's always internal before 13 weeks, as that's when the uterus comes out of your pelvis, so internals before then are always better. Normally a 6-week hardbeat (not necessarily at the start of ghat week, mind) dramatically reduces the risk of miscarriage. That's why they do them in other countries as routine.

Rainbow5SF · 15/06/2020 17:17

@Rememberallball aw wow congratulations!! What great news!!!
I know they can do TV earlier but it depends how good the sonographer is!! I guess I'm going to have to wait or just pay private.

My clinic won't even do my hcg bloods like they said they would!!! X

@Rainbow5SF, what a shame. I had my bloods done privately at my GP surgery - cost me £33 each time but was easier than trying to get it done any other way as we had our ivf abroad.

I have had a scan at 7 weeks (baby measured 6+5) and they could see fine without doing internal. I think they just say it might be internal so you're prepared for it in case they can't see well enough.
