Movement with anterior placenta

Is it usual to have days where you feel much less with an anterior placenta?
I'm 28 weeks. For a long time I only felt flutters quite low down, but the last 2 weeks in particular baby has been a lot more active and I've felt lots of strong kicks and movement at the top and right side of my stomach. Last night I realised I hadn't felt baby all day. I lay flat in bed and felt some little flutters low down.
I've just had a couple of ice lollies and I feel flutters at the bottom again but no strong kicks. Is it normal to have days like this? If baby moved the other way round could the placenta be muffling the kicks again?

Anterior placenta or not you should get to know your babies pattern, it seems that it has changed from what you've said so I'd call your maternity unit to go in and get checked. I found with both my anterior placentas it meant i didnt feel movement that early, but there was always a pattern.

Hi @VioletLilies it's so frustrating having an anterior placenta isn't it?

I'm a FTM so nothing to compare it to but i didn't feel a thing till I was over 22 weeks and i'm 31+4 now and still don't think I've really got a proper pattern.

My baby definitely has quieter days mixed in with the more crazy days. I've also noticed a change in the type of movement I feel as she grows and there's less space for her to move around....it's more rolls and waves than kicks and jabs now.
It can be hard not to worry constantly but as long as I'm feeling something regularly, I'm reassured. I know I don't feel everything as I went for a growth scan last week and she was wriggling all over the place but I couldn't feel a thing!

It's really a matter of learning about your body and your baby, I guess. If in doubt, just give the MAU a call....it's better to be safe than sorry.

I'm 37 + weeks now with anterior placenta and have definitely had quiet days versus days with more movement throughout. I have always relied on the lie down on my side test and this has always resulted in feeling 10+movements within 10-15 mins so I've always been reassured. I've also been able to track a pattern of sorts even on quiet days, ie baby moving early morning while I'm still in bed, then quiet for the rest of the morning, some flutters after lunch, and lots of kicking at bedtime. If you are at all concerned you should cal, but for your own sanity try to find a way to track or check even if it's not foolproof as it will be a long and stressful time otherwise!

Go to the hospital and get hooked up to the monitor. Your baby needs to be checked out.

VioletLilies · 15/06/2020 14:37

Thank you, will try lying on my side but will call midwife too.

I have a similar pattern @toomuchteaandcake , a lot more movement in the evenings, which is why I was a bit worried last night.

I'm 31 weeks with an anterior and everytime I think I'm getting a pattern it then changes which is sooo frustrating. He had a pretty quiet weekend compared to during the week during which it felt like he barely stopped and now today he is going crazy again, however even on his quieter days I still feel movement when I lie on my side etc so haven't had to be monitored. If you are ever worried please go and get checked.

Hi all
I’ve also got an anterior placenta and as a FTM didn’t really know what the feelings would be like!
I’m just 23 weeks and now I think I am feeling kicks low down on the left but definitely nothing that would be felt from the outside and nothing I could be certain of.

My midwife said not to worry for a few more weeks and gradually it should be easier to identify a pattern. It’s annoying though! Extra stress.

Can you guys see / feel anything from the outside of the bump? I’m dying for my husband to feel it.

sel2223 · 15/06/2020 18:41

@NWnature I very occasionally see/feel something from the outside but it's hard to catch it and only happened after about 30 weeks

VioletLilies · 15/06/2020 18:47

I just felt flutters low down until about 24 weeks. Since then, I have felt lots of bigger kicks at the top and can feel these when I put my hand on my stomach, but the kicks have never been strong when low so I guess that's where my placenta is.

I have felt a little more movement this afternoon - not as strong but more than yesterday so midwife said to see how he is this evening and to go in later if I'm still worried, it's likely he's just changed position.

Ah ok @sel2223 that’s a shame it’s quite rare. I think it would be really nice for partners who haven’t been able to be at scans etc to feel the baby. We are not finding out the sex and I think being able to feel the baby would make it all seem a bit more real!

sel2223 · 15/06/2020 20:55

@NWnature I know what you mean. Everyone is different though so it won't necessarily be the same for you.
I think it's because baby is head down now and I have a high anterior placenta so the bigger kicks are high up and cushioned by the placenta.

Zoey92 · 15/06/2020 21:05

I have anterior placenta. Felt flutters from 17wks, verrrry faint, midwife was adamant i wasnt feeling anything but little miss prooved them wrong when i went to be checked after a fall.
From about 20weeks they did get stronger but I'd found out placenta had slightly moved to the left, which is why i always felt movement on the right and high up.
She's also favoured head down since 12weeks scan.
I've only in last 4weeks felt the movement really low as im getting ready for labour 39+1

3isthemagicnumber3 · 16/06/2020 09:17

I am 23 weeks with anterior placenta, my first DD also had an anterior placenta. I have also had a baby with a posterior placenta. I definitely felt movements much later with AP and movements have been more intermittent currently, I sometimes feel lots of strong definite movements and other days not so much. However at 28 weeks I would get it checked out, just to be on the safe side. I am a firm believer of paying attention to movements and getting checked out if you are at all concerned.

EssElsiee · 16/06/2020 11:38

I have an anterior placenta and didn’t feel anything until 21 weeks.. no flutters or anything went from nothing to kicks! I still don’t have a ‘pattern’ now and I’m 34 weeks. From 21 - 34 weeks he moved more some days than others, some days were pretty quiet. But he would always always move at night when in bed. Apart from that I could never work out a pattern! Now I’m 34 weeks and he has way less room, he moves basically all day 🤣🤣

Pleasenodont · 16/06/2020 11:47

I’ve had an anterior placenta with 4/5 of my full term pregnancies and can honestly say it’s never affected movements whatsoever. I was always warned it would do but it just hasn’t. I’d always contact someone if your baby’s pattern has changed, especially after 28 weeks.
