Third baby? Did previous HG stop you going for it?

I desperately want a third baby. I have a 3 year old and a 16 month old. We have time on our side as we are late 20's, but would prefer to have another reasonably close gap if we are going to have a third.

The only problem is I suffered horrendously in my second pregnancy with hg and we (particularly my DH) are quite worried about how ill I could get again. We have no family help nearby which made my second pregnancy even harder.

So my question is, did anyone suffer terribly in pregnancy with hg and go on to have a normal pregnancy? And if you did have hg again, was it as traumatic?

I'm scared to be that unwell again, but I'm equally scared to regret not having our final baby.

I had HG in my first pregnancy and 16 weeks pregnat with my 2nd. The HG is severe and worse than before. I desperately dont want to be pregnant anymore. I will be having a hysterectomy as I never want to be pregnant again.

Sorry if this isnt what you want to hear. I am utterly miserable.

TeaChocolateandPeonies · 14/06/2020 22:36

I'm so sorry you are suffering. It is truly the most hideous thing I've ever been through. Although I've obviously blocked a lot of it out to even be considering doing it again!
I started to feel a little better at 19 weeks so hopefully you will soon.

No, not what I wanted to hear, but its truthful and a real possibility for it to happen again. I was hoping someone would have a story of it not being so bad when you've prepared for it (like getting preemptive medication, childcare etc) maybe I have to accept if we do go for it, I'm going to be incredibly ill.

Bump!

Anyone got any positive stories for me?

Sorry, another negative story from me! My HG was miles worse with this second pregnancy and it’s one of the reasons I’ll be getting sterilised when they do my c-section. Dealing with HG and a 3 year old has been horrific. I think it lasted until about 23 weeks and has just come back at 31 weeks. I’m counting down the days to my section as I never want to be pregnant again. I lost 3.5kgs in 4 days from the sickness and have only gained 10lbs in total so far because I lost so much weight to start with.

I had HG with both my successful pregnancies. I was vomiting in labour with DS1 it was so bad. We decided if we didn't have ds2 by the time the first went to school we would stick with one, 3 was never an option financially or with my fertility issues. I think you need to honestly ask yourself who would care for your two existing children if it happens again.

Billyjoearmstrong · 15/06/2020 17:08

I’m pregnant for the third time after having HG in my previous two pregnancies.

This time I was horrendously sick and on Ondansetron until week 24. 29 weeks this week and touch wood, I have a few bad days but nothing like before.

However, there is an 11 year age gap between my first two as I couldn’t face a second pregnancy for a long time.

There is 6 years between this pregnancy and the last for the same reason - but I’m 40 now so couldn’t really wait any longer if I wanted a third.

Billyjoearmstrong · 15/06/2020 17:10

Tuis pregnancy has been the best sickness wise though - I was still vomiting on the operating table with the other two. I’ve felt human again from 24 weeks this time which I wasn’t expecting, but my god, those first 24 weeks were hell on earth.

I only considered it as Dd is 6 and happy to play and Dh had a job working from home. And lockdown did me a lot of favours with no school run to think of.

Niffler2019 · 15/06/2020 17:55

Hi sorry another negative story to add.

I'm 18 weeks pregnant with our 2nd and I've found hg much worse this time. I am fingers crossed just starting to feel some improvement and can function again. Our daughter is 7, I would have preferred a smaller age gap but I just couldn't bring myself to go through hg again amongst other factors. Eventually it had been so long I forgot how dreadful it is and convinced myself I probably wouldn't be unlucky enough to suffer a 2nd time!

I have found it has lingered around a lot longer this time. Although it was horrific from weeks 6-12 last time - including 1 hospital admission - it did seem to settle a little bit at 12 weeks. I still had a lot of nausea, dizziness and bad days but I was able to go back to work on reduced hours. This time I've had 3 hospital admissions and it's only the past few days I've felt a bit more like myself. If this had been my first I honestly don't know if I could have done it again. I've been looking into being sterilised and also nagging my poor husband to get himself on the waiting list for a vasectomy. There is absolutely no way I ever want to risk getting accidentally pregnant in future and having hg for a 3rd time. I just don't think I could go through another hg pregnancy.

I never wanted more than 1 or 2 though. I do feel really sorry for ladies that want a big family and get hg, it must be such a tough call to make. If you are really desperate for a 3rd I wouldn't let it stop you because you might regret it one day. I would really have some good plans in place though beforehand. Have a plan for childcare, are there friends and family who could help out? Maybe wait until your other children are in nursery/school then at least you get some rest during the day (didn't go to plan for me though with schools closing!) By that age they will be a little more independent as well so at least they can dress themselves and occupy themselves a bit if you feel unwell. Also I would see your GP as soon as you start trying to conceive to discuss options for sickness medication and start taking it as soon as possible. Was there any particular medication that helped previously?

Good luck, I hope if you do decide to go for it that you don't get hg again

No but put it this way I have made sure there won't be a number 4

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 15/06/2020 20:12

I'm on pregnancy 4 all HG, the 1st was by far the worst, but there are times it is really difficult. I'm struggling to eat which is making me weak, therefore caring for my 2 is really draining.
Contact Pregnancy Sickness Support and they can help with preparing to have another HG Pregnancy.

lc86 · 15/06/2020 20:20

My hg has got worse each time, on 3rd pregnancy and at times wished I wasn't pregnant again. My two are 7 and 10 so luckily they could understand and are a bit more independent, but I felt like such a bad mum for months as had no energy for them and was so unwell xx

ThisMustBeMyDream · 15/06/2020 23:29

I have a positive story.

First 2 children both hyperemesis. 20 weeks with 1st. 14 weeks with 2nd. With my 2nd I insisted on having IM cyclizine to self administer at home. That worked really well for me. It stopped the constant back and forth to hospital to repeat the endless cycle of rehydration, get vomiting under control, back on orals and home. Then back again 3 days later with dehydration. I was about 7 weeks when I got the IM cyclizine. I probably needed to use it once or twice a week. The control was so much better because there was no delays in administration.

With my 3rd I started taking pre-emptive oral cyclizine from the moment of the positive test. I took it until 8 weeks when I stopped with the realisation that it wasn't happening. I wasn't sick - not once. Not a single bout of nausea.

To me, it was nothing short of a miracle.

(Btw I had 3 other pregnancies between child 1 and 2 which were not successful and had hyperemesis in all of those too).
