Constipation

I'm 17 weeks and I am so, SO constipated. Laxido isn't doing a thing. I just don't know what to do anymore, I'm not on coffee as that makes me sick (used to be my go to!) Can anyone suggest home remedies as I'd quite like to have sex with my husband at some point without the fear of pooing on him.

Tinned prunes?

Wick · 14/06/2020 00:43

Lots of fibre + dried apricots/fig rolls/prunes, prune juice. I did the same leading up to the birth & for after....

CleverQuacks · 14/06/2020 00:53

I found the fibre gel drinks really helped me and they are safe in pregnancy.

arleybarley · 14/06/2020 02:12

Fybogel twice a day. Also porridge with a banana in the morning really helped me.

Rosegoldmum · 14/06/2020 02:24

Prune juice. Glug glug 😬

I've had the world's worst constipation since I entered third trimester and had to go on iron supplements... I've discovered this amazing thing from Holland and barrett called Ortis Fruit and Fibre Chewable Cubes (all made of natural dried fruit) and they actually taste good. Now going pretty much once a day and not half as rocky as before (sorry tmi haha). On the packet it says in big letters Intestinal Transit and I was like, sounds exactly what I need 😂 also if you're on iron, switch to liquid iron (I'm taking this stuff called Spatone or something like that) which has also really lessened the constipation. Good luck, it really is torture, big sympathy

Ps also you just have to nuclear about adding fibre to your diet. Brown rice, brown pasta, brown bread, never the white versions. Chia seeds, sesame seeds, sprinkle all the seeds on your food. All bran mixed in with your ordinary cereal. All snacks to be either fresh fruit or dried fruits and nuts. Even orange juice, take the pulpy version. Do fibre counting like ppl do calorie counting... once you've got in a routine then the habit is there, and fibre has good gut health benefits etc too. You can defeat this monster haha

Fybogel twice a day and porridge and an apple for breakfast.

heroineinahalfshell · 14/06/2020 10:04

How long have you been taking the laxido? It took 2 weeks of daily doses to work for me, until the 2nd week I didn't feel like it was really helping. Came off it after 2 weeks and since then daily prunes, orange juice and leafy veg seems to be keeping me regular (never go more than 2 days without a BM now, before it was more like 4-5 days!)

Mc3209 · 14/06/2020 10:31

Daily kiwi and prunes are helping, plus trying to guzzle a lot of water.

amysmithdubai · 14/06/2020 11:32

sultana bran and kiwi fruits!!

Bluejayway91 · 14/06/2020 16:43

I've been having really bad constipation recently and fresh orange juice has been really helpful.

Umberta · 14/06/2020 19:01

Oh one more thing (inspired as I just had a healthy BM today 😂)... in traditional chinese medicine they recommend aubergine, this is because there's a chemical in it that irritates the bowel slightly. Don't overdo it as it'll cause diarrhoea, but a little cooked aubergine in your meal might help. Absolutely never fails for me, although I don't like the taste haha. And I think it's in season atm! We keep getting it in our surplus veg box lately

mumworkstudywine · 15/06/2020 00:29

Thanks everyone for your tips and tricks!! I sent DH out for bran and he came back with Special K ffs. So I'm going to the shop tomorrow myself and hopefully get this motor running! Pregnancy is so beautiful.

Ahh I totally understand your pain.
Dried prunes/apricots/fig juice. Ordered prune juice too and lots of water. It has a slow process but does work.

MumMrs85 · 16/06/2020 13:09

@Umberta I bought those Ortis Fruits after reading your post, so you chew them before you swallow them? The smell made me feel a bit sick so I tore it in to a few chunks and swallowed them whole with water?!

Umberta · 16/06/2020 17:41

@MumMrs85 yeah technically you're supposed to chew them, but an alternative could be to mush them up with some jam to put on toast? I maybe wouldn't swallow large pieces cos that could be counterproductive if your body finds it hard to pass them? It's funny haha I really like the way they taste, myself! Hope they work for you, anyway! I'm on day 3 in a row of normal daily intestinal transits WOOHOO! I even texted my mum to tell her the good news... 😂
