Mayonnaise during pregnancy?

Is hellmans light mayonnaise safe during pregnancy? The bottle says “egg yolk” in the ingredients but the last bottle I had said pasteurised egg which I know is safe. Some threads say hellmans is fine as it uses heat but just want to be safe.

It's absolutely fine from a jar.

NHS website suggests it’s fine

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/

What you can eat

raw, partially cooked and fully cooked British Lion eggs (eggs with a lion stamp on them)

foods with raw egg in them, such as mousse and mayonnaise, if they're from British Lion eggs
eggs that are not British Lion, as long as the whites and yolks are cooked thoroughly until solid

What to avoid

raw or partially cooked eggs that are not British Lion

duck, goose or quail eggs, unless cooked thoroughly until the whites and yolks are solid

Why

Try to eat British Lion eggs (eggs with a lion stamp on them) because they are less likely to have salmonella in them.

Salmonella is unlikely to harm your unborn baby, but you could get food poisoning.

If you eat eggs that are not British Lion, or not from hens, make sure the whites and yolks are cooked thoroughly.

Totally fine! The only mayo you’d need to avoid is homemade if the eggs weren’t lion stamped, but otherwise go for it.

And from the Hellman’s website

www.hellmanns.com/ca/en/faq.html

Can I eat Hellmann's mayonnaise if I am pregnant?
It is always best to check with your physician before making any changes to your diet. That being said, Hellmann’s mayonnaise uses free-run eggs that are pasteurized. Pasteurization is a process that eliminates harmful bacteria that could otherwise cause illness.

BadAlice · 13/06/2020 14:25

It’s totally fine. Any shop bought mayo will have pasteurised eggs to prolong the shelf life. Home made mayo fine if made with Lion Stamped eggs (pretty much all commercially available eggs). The only mayo you might avoid is that made from backyard chickens but as stated by a PP salmonella doesn’t haven't known affects on a fetus, it just isn’t ideal to get food poisoning whilst pregnant.

That Hellman’s website answer is such typical buck passing 😂

Whiffle77 · 13/06/2020 17:03

It's fine from a jar, the only time to consider is when its homemade! I wouldn't cope without it!! 😂

scr99 · 13/06/2020 18:54

Brilliant thanks all just wanted to be safe! Can’t live without mayo lol x

Oh I am so glad the answer was yes to this question, I have mayonnaise with most things 😂

Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 13/06/2020 23:43

@Tallulahs09 I was thinking exactly the same, I’m getting through a jar a week, I have with nearly every meal 🤣
