Do GPs prescribe medication for nausea without vomiting?

Hi, can anyone tell me, before I go through the sometimes difficult process of getting hold of a GP, do they prescribe anything to help with nausea if I'm not actually vomiting? Currently 9+3 and have been feeling awful since week 5. I'm wearing sickness wrist bands but don't think they're having any effect. Very aware it could be worse but if there is a medicine that could help I'd be so relieved. Thanks.

Yes. I was incapacitated by nausea. At least if you vomit you get to feel a bit better for a short time afterwards!

happylittlevegemites · 12/06/2020 20:10

Oh, and a consultant told me I could have morning sickness as I was 16 weeks. Err, OK ... so why am I spending all day lying on the floor then?!?

happylittlevegemites · 12/06/2020 20:10

COULDN’T, not could.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 12/06/2020 21:30

Yes. Look up the PUQE score from the RCOG this defines whether you should have treatment. Consider contacting Pregnancy Sickness Support too x

Umberta · 12/06/2020 21:56

Yes if it's really bad just say you need cyclizine, full stop. I did, got the prescription, no questions asked. "Hi I need a prescription for cyclizine for my morning sickness." Convo took 2 mins. I sometimes think with these doctors you just have to be firm 😄

Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 12/06/2020 22:32

Yes I got cyclizine for nausea x

LizzyAnna99 · 12/06/2020 22:35

I just want to send hugs cause it is bloody awful :( my doctors did nothing but then I woke up at 10+4 and had NO symptoms. I’m now 34 weeks by the way and baby is fine, so just wanted to say if you wake up in the next few weeks feeling totally fine don’t worry! I literally had nausea from 7am-7:30pm every day until 10+3

CoolNoMore · 13/06/2020 03:13

I mentioned that I was suffering from mild but constant nausea this week (34+5) and my obstetrician had her pen out ready to write me a prescription! I'm really not in any need at all, but yeah, she was keen! If the GP won't, try someone else.

I haven’t had a baby for over 10 years, with all 3 pregnancies I felt so sick. I wasn’t prescribed anything.

timeisnotaline · 13/06/2020 04:26

Yes they do. You have to explain how it’s affecting your life. In my case i couldn’t really eat, was losing weight very rapidly and very unwell.

Weenurse · 13/06/2020 04:28

Ginger is a natural antiemetic

ovener · 13/06/2020 11:10

Thank you everyone for your helpful comments. It's great to know I do have options. @Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily I love that they've called it the 'PUQE' score! Grin

I seem to remember feeling quite a bit better by week 12/13 and then totally fine by week 16 in my last successful pregnancy so just weighing up if I can hold on until then.

I also had to get antisickness meds from my GP. Looking back on it (I’m 21 weeks now) I’m really glad I did because I was so unwell and there is no point in pushing on it there is something out there to help you!

If one more ‘helpful’ person had suggested I “eat a ginger biscuit” I probably would have committed murder if I hadn’t been feeling too sick to sit up!

timeisnotaline · 14/06/2020 00:45

I’m sure you will survive till then but why do that when something might help? I had to try a few different ones but when you find something that works it’s like magic.

Umberta · 14/06/2020 04:12

Totally agree with pp, why "survive", it's better to thrive surely! As cyclizine is known to be safe. My nausea carried on till week 20 or so, I basically wouldn't have put on enough baby weight by then if I hadn't done something about the nausea. Agree with pp, again if anyone suggested ginger to me especially like in week 18 it made me 🙄🤢 because this nausea was next level. I had candied ginger, fresh ginger, everything, didn't cut it, and I was like, do you think I haven't tried that yet... 😂

Hugosmum123 · 14/06/2020 04:25

I had the nausea the whole pregnancy. I’m going to be honest - it literally drove me round the twist.

I was prescribed the cyclizine and it had no effect. Nothing did. They did say it was unusual to have it like me so I hope it will work for you.

I was also prescribed Gaviscone as they thought that might help. So maybe keep that in mind as alternatives to try.

You have my utmost sympathy x

Umberta · 14/06/2020 04:32

I second gaviscon!! I still take that daily xx

PatricksRum · 14/06/2020 16:32

Potentially but I would try natural things.
None of these stop the feeling of nausea did me. It's just a feeling.

OoOoBabyLove · 14/06/2020 17:07

yes u can!! i got prescribed prochlorperazine! i was bed ridden with nausea and just urging all day long for about a month! it was awful so i really feel for you! hope you feel much better soon! much like another poster, i too woke up around week 10 and was STARVING hungry and since that day i hadnt suffered at all! so strange x

ovener · 17/06/2020 18:21

Little update, just picked up a prescription for promethazine. The doctor was a little reluctant to prescribe anything so we agreed I'd take it as little as possible to get by.. We'll see how I go. I've just taken two so expecting to fall asleep early tonight as it's also used for insomnia! Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll update again if there are any dramas.

Yes definitely, first time I got cyclizine and it worked brilliantly, second time it didn’t help at all, I felt drunk, sea sick, and hungover all at the same time, it went on for months and I wasn’t able to eat. The GP prescribed 3/4 different things with barely any success, I kept asking for Ondansetron but they wouldn’t give it, apparently it works very well and is used in the US all the time. GP kept saying my keytones were on the verge of meaning a stay in hospital and that I must eat and drink more, it wasn’t a good time, but worth it of course.

Anurulz · 17/06/2020 18:30

Am glad you got something for it OP. I used to keep a small slice of raw ginger and bit into it at short intervals. Raw mango is another brilliant natural gift to pregnant women. You could get it this time of the year in Asian stores.
