Did a bad thing

Rented a doppler. 10+3, couldn't find a heartbeat, which I'm reassuring myself by telling myself it's too early...
But part of me Is going crazy and wants to book a private scan.
My OH thinks I'm bloody mad! 🙈

Throw away the doppler.

Ducky1900 · 12/06/2020 19:41

I know I know...
To make things worse, my nausea isn't as bad either as the beginning of the week, so I'm thinking the worst!

Nooo! I've heard so many stories about why this is a bad idea. Take it back, it'll cause you extra worry xx

Babyshine2020 · 12/06/2020 19:41

A friend gave me hers and I couldn't resist (it Sat in the cupboard for a few weeks). I got it out at about 11 weeks and found it, but then I went to the midwife at 16 weeks she couldn't find it .. baby's so small it could be hiding anywhere.

I have an anterior placenta (you could too!) and that's why the midwife couldn't find it.

Don't stress. You have you're scan soon.

Puppydogg1 · 12/06/2020 19:43

Please send the Doppler back. I contemplated renting one so many times in this pregnancy as I've had a MMC previously. I'm so glad I didn't get one, as when I went to my 16 week midwife appointment it took her an absolute age to find the heartbeat, I'm talking over 20 minutes and she knew what she was looking for.
They are still so small at this stage and can hide anywhere, especially if you have an anterior placenta. Xx

sel2223 · 12/06/2020 19:46

Step away from the doppler!

In a lot of areas, they've stopped listening for baby's heartbeat at the 16 week appointment as even experienced, trained midwives can struggle to find it! I was told it's hit and miss as 16 weeks is so early so how does an untrained person find it 6 weeks earlier?

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 12/06/2020 19:50

Don’t. Even professional midwives struggle to find the heartbeat at 16 weeks. You’d have almost no chance at 10 weeks.

Anyway, the risk isn’t not finding a heartbeat and wrongly panicking. The risk is thinking you’ve found a heartbeat, when it’s actually your heartbeat or blood rushing through the placenta, and thinking it’s the baby. Or not being trained enough to recognise that a heartbeat is irregular or too slow and a sign of difficulty. Then being falsely reassured and not seeking help.

A midwife once said “the presence of a heartbeat means we have a chance of helping you. It’s when there’s no heartbeat that it’s too late”. It really stuck with me. Just because you can hear a heartbeat doesn’t mean your baby is ok. If there’s a change in movements, it needs checking out.

Throw

It

Away!

Alychloe · 12/06/2020 19:53

Nooo not the dreaded Doppler! I’m 22 weeks now, but from week 10-16 I really wanted to hear her heartbeat for reassurance, but I read so many negative reviews and I knew I’d be distraught and panic if I couldn’t find it! I instead booked in private scans in between NHS scans :) so got one at 11 weeks and 17 weeks! I would recommend the private scan. Baby will be fine OP, like many have said, sometimes even midwives who are highly trained in finding the heart beat can’t find them :) it’s totally understandable that you want a scan, go for it!

attillathenun · 12/06/2020 19:53

Please get rid of the Doppler OP, you will definitely not hear a heartbeat at 10 weeks and even midwives struggle sometimes. There’s a reason they tell you not to use one - because it causes totally unnecessary stress and panic!!

mylittlesandwich · 12/06/2020 19:53

Basically the same as everyone else, send that back. I don't think that they should actually be allowed to sell them to anyone not qualified to use it. You'll drive yourself up the wall finding and not finding heartbeats for the next 30 weeks. Even if you do find a heartbeat that's no guarantee your baby is ok. A trained midwife knows what a healthy baby sounds like.

toomuchteaandcake · 12/06/2020 20:00

The baby is so tiny, it'd be a miracle if you found anything tbh. Even if you did it'd prob be your own heartbeat you were mistaking for it.

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2020 20:07

Step away from the home diagnostics...

Happymum12345 · 12/06/2020 20:20

I had a Doppler with all 3 of my babies. Sometimes when I was anxious it would provide relief when I found the heartbeat, but for those times I couldn’t, it was the worse thing ever. The last time I used one, i was 38 weeks & I was in such a state I had to stay in hospital for a week to calm down. I really don’t think they’re a good idea.

sarahc336 · 12/06/2020 20:24

Oh god throw it away, 10 weeks I think a trained professional would struggle, they stopped doing the heart rate routinely at tk e 16 week appointment as too many midwives couldn't find it, seriously please do not panic. At 10 weeks the baby is so tiny that a hand held Doppler has no chance Smile

sarahc336 · 12/06/2020 20:25

And morning sickness tends to peak around 9 weeks and can in some women then ease off as if you look at hcg levels they peak at 9 weeks then start to drop again, this can explain the reduction in your symptoms xx

xxKatie9806xx · 12/06/2020 20:26

I used to enjoy using my Doppler but each to their own - but it’s way too early to be using it anyway!

Elizag20 · 12/06/2020 20:37

I'm 21 weeks and the midwife took 15 minutes to find the heartbeat a few days ago. Please don't panic and please put it away x

MichelleOR84 · 13/06/2020 03:45

I was given a doppler as a gift with my last pregnancy. I could find what I thought might be a heart beat until 13 weeks . By 18 weeks I was feeling movement though and never touched it again .

I’m pregnant again and started feeling movement much earlier on so my Doppler has barely been touched . I also hasn’t been feeling as anxious this pregnancy either though .At my 16 week appointment my midwife took forever to find the heartbeat which does make me question how accurate my doppler even is .

I’m definitely not against home dopplers ( I know a few people on here who have strong opinions on them ) but I wouldn’t use them as reassurance . If you want reassurance this early on then book yourself a private scan !!!

LH1987 · 13/06/2020 04:13

I could never get the Doppler to work, I tried up until 36 weeks and nothing.....

Had a healthy baby.

Get rid of it, you will make yourself crazy 😜
