Morning Sickness/Nausea advice

Afternoon all,

This is my first pregnancy and I am looking for some wisdom of those who have been here before.
Currently 6+2 and for the last 3 days have felt really rather green. Confused
I have ordered sickness bands on Amazon as I've heard they may help some women and trying to shift taking vitamins at night rather than morning as I've heard this can help.
I'm finding it hard to eat any of the things I did before. The thought of meat makes me feel ill but have been managing toast and a little pasta.
I feel annoyed with myself as I feel like I can't get on with work with the same level of concentration that I used to. I know many women suffer much worse with actual vomiting but I can't bear the thought of feeling like this with constant low level nausea all day for another 6/7 weeks.

Any tips? Xx

I felt horrendously sick from 4 weeks right up until about 16 weeks with this pregnancy (I'm 24 weeks now) so you have my sympathy! I found ginger helped - as in ginger nut biscuits, gingerbread, ginger cake 😂 but honestly it really calmed my stomach. Also porridge was good in the mornings as it kept me fuller for longer and my sickness was always worse when I was hungry but then I felt so sick I struggled to eat! So my advice would be to stick to bland foods and make sure you eat little and often so you never get the chance to get too hungry! The sea bands really helped me some days, others not so much, but I did end up wearing them overnight and found that stopped me waking up feeling really sick. x

peachypetite · 12/06/2020 16:28

I found it helped at that stage to eat every hour, just an apple or some dry crackers and not let myself get hungry.

Scotslass84 · 12/06/2020 16:43

Thank you both, much appreciated.

Amazon literally delivered the bands 5 minutes ago and already got them on and hoping for the best!

I'm liking the sound of the gingerbread cake I've never had that for years, time for the other half to go to the shop Grin

I know I shouldn't moan but god the first trimester seems to be a bit miserable doesn't it!!

It's ok to moan! My first 16 weeks were hideous lol! Now heartburn, cramps and spd has kicked in but I still feel better than the first trimester! 😬 really hope the bands help you x

Whatever you feel like eating, eat it. Don't try to eat something if it doesn't appeal, it won't sit well! For me, I mostly live off carbs - they just seem easy to suggest so don't bounce back! Bread sticks have been useful to me in both pregnancies. The only meat i can manage is chicken, anything more flavoured won't stay down. Just stick with whatever sounds appealing!

Scotslass84 · 12/06/2020 17:25

@Troubledmummy3 I'm glad you're feeling better now at 16 weeks!

@crazychemist yep, I'm on the carb train as well, only thing I can manage - thought of anything else just gives me the boke

Also don’t worry about eating healthy at the moment. If all you can stomach some days is salt and vinegar crisps it doesn’t matter.
I can recommend the liquid version of pregnacare to get some vitamins and iron in you, I couldn’t swallow tablets.

Scotslass84 · 12/06/2020 19:15

@peachypetite thank you 😘

@Scotslass84 I feel the same, I’m 7 and a half weeks and I’ve felt like this since week 6, I don’t want to complain but I feel horrendous because I can’t stomach food and then feel really poorly because of low energy. Today has been the worst, not been sick, but very close twice. I’ve got travel bands but not sure if they are helping. Ginger hasn’t worked for me, I just now can’t stand ginger, nothing seems to be more palatable than anything ☹️ Fingers crossed this doesn’t last too long, I need my strength and to eat well for bump!

sarahc336 · 12/06/2020 20:52

Firstly the travel bands have helped me through both of my pregnancies, I suggest leaving them all the time until the sickness wears off. Second many women find eating helps and when your tummy gets empty this is when you feel more sick and thirdly you won't want to eat what you did previously, you'll go off most food so to cope and survive until the sickness goes you literally eat and drink what you can stomach and even if that's drinking lemonade and eating salt and vinegar Pringles then so be it, trust me your baby won't be hurt by this, we've all been there Grin lastly be kind in yourself, morning sickness can be awful and it's tiring, your work will struggle for a while but it'll pass and things will go back to normal again soon xx

LiliPad28 · 12/06/2020 21:57

I’ve had terrible HG, still going at almost 14 weeks. Apples tend to help a lot, fruits in general seem to be more tolerable!

Cobbsgirl92 · 13/06/2020 09:03

I suffered terribly with nausea just like you from around 6 weeks. I didn’t want to eat anything but every time I felt hungry the nausea just got 100 times worse. I ended up making myself eat anything I could, plain pasta or crisps helped for a while.
I’m now 13 weeks and things have improved with regards to what I can stomach but the nausea is still with me daily. I can’t stand meat and food shopping sets me off with all the smells .
My advice is he as kind to yourself as possible and if you do fancy something eat it as soon as you can as I kept fancying something for dinner and by the time dinner time arrived i couldn’t face it.
It’s such a rubbish time but I keep reminding myself it will be worth it.
Keep going ! Smile

biscuit13 · 13/06/2020 10:38

It's ok to moan, I was so excited to get pregnant and then I had awful nausea from 6 to 13 weeks and I honestly had days where I had to just lay on the sofa and I thought, what have I done?!
It does slowly ease off though, and yeah I second the bands and anything ginger. I used to keep a pack of ginger nut biscuits next to my bed so if I woke up in the morning early I would have one and go back to sleep, that helped a bit.
And eat anything you can at this point, for me it was crisps and pasta, I just wanted carbs.
Hope you can get through it and feel better soon.

Scotslass84 · 13/06/2020 11:19

Thanks ladies

It's nice to have some tips and be able to share a moan with others. I think the first trimester is so hard, dealing with so many changes, generally feeling ropey and you can't really tell anyone until after 12 weeks.

To those on the thread that are currently suffering from morning sickness, let us eat what we want without worry or guilt and I hope this passes for us all soon.

To those who have been through this before, I'm genuinely pleased you no longer feel like shit because this is grim 😂

Ginger biscuits before I even got out of bed in the morning helped. Plus eating little and often as I found that if I left it too long the feeling of sickness would get so bad that the thought of eating would make me throw up and it became a terrible circle of feeling sick because I hadn't eaten but then not being able to eat as I was being sick or feeling sick.

sel2223 · 13/06/2020 11:29

Hi OP, the first trimester is awful but it does get better, honest!

Just be kind to yourself, drink plenty of water (dehydration is the biggest risk), and eat what you can when you can.....for me that was pretty much just salty snacks and fizzy sweets for weeks! I was the same with meat....even just thinking about the smell made me throw up every time.

I took multivitamins at night and had about a 60% success rate at keeping them down (better than nothing). I also tried sickness bands, oranges and ginger sweets which did help but I still ended up having to get some anti sickness meds from the GP.

Mine started to ease around 14 weeks and I've not been sick at all since 20 weeks (I'm now 31 weeks). I think weeks 7-11 were the peak looking back on it but, at the time, it just felt never ending so I can definitely sympathise.

sarahc336 · 13/06/2020 11:46

Yup it's rough, I'm in my second pregnancy now and just moved out of the morning sickness phase, I'd forgotten how awful it was, it does honestly get better though for any first timers out there Smile

Scotslass84 · 18/06/2020 08:02

I just wanted to add an update for any that might be struggling with the same. The morning sickness got progressively worse.
The relentless nausea punctuated by waves of more intense nausea were so debilitating that I had to call the dr. I was put on cyclizine first and when that didn't work Ondansetron which after only around 12hrs has been an absolute godsend.
Pregnancy sickness support website is excellent and fantastic at giving advice that you can take with you to the Dr.
What I've realised is that you don't need to have constant vomiting to be suffering from hyperemesis. If it's affecting your ability to function or feel human then it's a problem that all the gingernuts in the world sadly will not fix.
If you need help ask for it, there's no medals for suffering xxx
