Frank Breech at 34 weeks

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of a frank breech baby at 34 weeks? My little one has been in this position since 20 weeks and does not want to budge it seems! Midwife said if he's still there at 36 weeks they will discuss options.

I'm nervous about the possibility of a c-section but also nervous about him potentially having hip problems as I've read that's more common with frank breech babies in particular.

Did anyone have a frank breech baby that turned later on? And once your baby was here, did they have hip dysplasia?

I believe Frank breech position is the more preferable position for a vaginal breech birth. So if you do want to consider that it’s worth discussing with your consultant.
I can’t advise on hip dysplasia, my best friends daughter was treated for it when she was very young, and had to wear a brace. It did not bother the baby one bit and fixed the problem. cx

What makes you nervous about a c section? I had elective sections for my kids. Both positive experiences.

Can’t advise on the hip displaysia I’m afraid.

Hi there OP!

I wasn't breech myself at birth however I was back to back and was born with hip dysplasia. The doctors aren't too sure what caused it, it could of been one of those things.

It just meant I was late to join the walking party and I had to wear nappies until I was quite old to separate the hips (these days you can get special body suits from M&S).

Have you looked at the website spinning babies? It has lots of info on breech babies and how to try turn them yourself.

Best of luck, any questions feel free to fire them at me regarding my hips. 💕

Hi @GingerSunday I don’t have any advice sadly, but I am in the same position. Baby was frank breech at 28 and 32 week growth scan and I think it flips between that and transverse lie. I have my 36 week growth scan in just over a week so will confirm babies position and then talk to be about options. I think if it’s still not head down I will consider an elective c section. I am worried too about possible reasons for baby not being head down and also hip dysplasia but I think most babies are perfectly fine.

My daughter was in a frank breech position in the third trimester. She did not turn herself. I ended up having an ECV at 37 weeks as I didn't fancy the idea of the long c-section recovery. The ECV was successful and she stayed in the correct position.

She had appointments about her hips after birth. They did a hip scan but she was fine. My neice had hip dysplasia and she had to wear a double nappy. They also could not put her in equipment like a jumperoo. This was 5 years ago though so the advice may have changed.

Thanks everyone it's good to just hear other people's experiences as it puts your mind at rest! Everyone I've known who's had a baby, all their babies have been in position by now and so I don't have anyone to ask about their experiences!

I am nervous of a c-section just because it's an operation and I had abdominal surgery last year and the recovery was awful! Just worried about a similar recovery with a newborn. Of course I will do whatever it takes to get baby here safe and I know they will also speak to me about an ECV but he's quite a big boy and has been breech the whole way so I'm dubious about that working and trying to prepare myself!

Seems like any hip problems can be fixed easily enough which is great, I just worry about him being in pain or having trouble walking in the future. Fingers crossed he's okay!

@Missdrifter I hope your baby turns too! I will be none stop on my birthing ball and on all fours for the next two weeks 😂

I had a suprise breech, although I'm not sure if he was Frank or complete, just know he wasn't footling. Ended up with an EMCS when they discovered. He was seen at the hip clinic and his his were ever so slightly not at the right angles. We used double nappies and slinged and by 12 weeks were discharged. Another baby in one of our groups who was not breech however was diagnosed late and had a brace for 12 weeks. Didn't bother her and she's fine now x

Definitely take a look at the Spinning babies website
