Worried about scan measurements

Shanlou12 · 10/06/2020 13:24

Hi all, just had my 12 week scan and found out baby’s fetal nuchal is measuring almost twice the size it should has meaning there is probably a high chance of it having downs, Edwards or Pataus syndrome sad
anyone else had this at their scan really worried next few days waiting will be hell

Have you had the blood test too (combined test)? What have the sonographers said?

Usually they would give you a risk ratio based on your blood test results, nuchal translucency measurement and other factors such as your age etc. They wouldn't be able to give you your risk ratio based on the scan alone.

AncientandPregnant · 10/06/2020 13:49

How big was it? I’ve had 3mm gold with two of my kids and both were fine. With one of them the combined risk with bloods was 1:10 but still he was fine.

Raaaa · 10/06/2020 13:50

In mine I had the scan and then had the blood test straight after and they gave a rough risk factor?

Shanlou12 · 10/06/2020 13:51

It was quite big 7.8 Sad I had the combined test today yes had bloods taken and the scan sonographer said most likely be high results Sad

Shanlou12 · 10/06/2020 13:51

6.8 sorry

They say I need to wait for bloods to go to lab for risk factor results but as I said sonogropher said most likely wouldn’t be good news

Best not to worry about it until you get the results. I've heard for most people who get high risk that their babies turn out fine.

If you get the results back and are still worried, you can get the NIPT harmony test done. It's a simple blood test that has no risk of miscarriage, and much more accurate than the combined test. You can get it done privately or through the NHS but you still have to pay for it (NHS send teh sample off to a private lab). I had this test done at my hospital and paid for it. It's your choice, but wait for the results and see what they say.

Shanlou12 · 10/06/2020 15:22

Thanks @SKP86
They told me if the results are high I’ll need to have a long thin needle into the tummy?
How much was the blood test is you don’t mind me asking

Sending hugs and handhold

Ours was 2.8 so high end of normal
Bloods back this week, 1:33 chance of downs

We had the iona test today, its a private screening which is much more accurate and should give us high or low risk and we go from there

Amniocentesis is where they insert a needle through your abdomen to collect a sample of fluid to test and is the only thing that will give you a yes or no to the 3 syndromes.

You don't have to do anything, it is your choice

It is hard, I'm not going to say don't think about it or think positively but just try to allow yourself to feel what you feel, you will get a call in a few days if it's high risk and go from there with information meetings etc.

I wish you all the best

Pygmyseahorse · 10/06/2020 15:55

The iona test for me was £350
It's a blood test, non invasive and more accurate

I was told the NHS screening combined test is about 85% accurate.. Many false positives

Persiaclementine · 10/06/2020 15:57

Sorry you've had not the news you wanted, it's very stressful isnt it. You should get your blood test results back within a week if your baby is high risk for any of the three syndromes, high risk is 1:125 I believe and under (might be 1:150) if you work the percentage out it's still quite a low risk. Unfortunatly with a high NT measurement it can be a sign of a heart defect or other structural defect within the baby, I'm not sure the process if your baby comes back as low risk but obviously still has the high NT measurement so might be worth asking your midwife what happens then ? Thank you @ Pygmyseahorse
I have just had the phone call to book my appointment to have the procedure done Friday (the cvc) it’s hard not to think the worst as everything I’ve seen that’s been high and turned out ok is like 4.5 something like that and mine seems so so high Sad
I think I’m definitely going to have the procedure as I couldn’t bear it having something seriously wrong and not surviving very long after birth Sad
I hope all your test come back ok for you Smile

Thanks @ Persiaclementine the lady I just spoke to said of all comes back clear they will just offer me extra scans and blood tests to keep an eye on baby Nt may go down or they may find something else than the 3 syndromes wrong with baby
Just can’t help thinking the worst with the measurements sooo high

That's a completely natural thing to do in the circumstances, on another pregnancy board I'm on, there were a few ladies who went through the same as you and their babies results turned out fine and the measurement did decrease slightly, which is promising. So although it's probably best to be prepared for bad news, try not to completely give up hope

Lockdownbabies · 10/06/2020 20:37

Thanks @Persiaclementine I will but just hard! Sad
Glad to know others have gone through the same and turned out well though Smile

Lockdownbabies · 10/06/2020 21:41

@Persiaclementine was the women as high as mine or??

Pygmyseahorse · 11/06/2020 00:10

I'm so sorry, at least it's soon and you'll know for sure in a few days

Sending love, it's a very difficult time. My heart really goes out to you

Lockdownbabies · 11/06/2020 11:02

Thank you @Pygmyseahorse Means a lot

SKP86 · 12/06/2020 13:10
