Sounds like an infection. Telephone maternity triage if you are over 16 weeks or your GP if you are less (your community midwife could do a swab but won’t be able to do much else as can’t prescribe). It could be thrush (sometimes presents a bit differently in pregnancy) but best to get it checked out and have the appropriate treatment started ASAP.

Midwife. Anything of related is best run by them first. They can always refer you on to an obstetrician or back to the GP

Lynda07 · 10/06/2020 12:39

Definitely doctor. It sounds like an infection and needs to be treated especially quickly as you're pregnant. Nothing to worry about, it happens but don't leave it.

sel2223 · 10/06/2020 13:00

I had a UTI earlier in pregnancy and went straight to the GP so I could get antibiotics.
I didn't contact the midwife at all.

Clemmie83 · 10/06/2020 13:03

I agree, when I had a UTI I went straight to the doctor for antibiotics, you need to get it treated quickly.

As a midwife I would much rather you rang someone who could give you appropriate treatment quickly than wasted your time running it by me.

Whatinthename20 · 10/06/2020 15:37

Does it have an odour, does it itch? I would speak to a gp not midwife. How far along re you?

Sandybval · 10/06/2020 15:39

Eurgh the midwives I had were like this, they said anything at all run it by us, and then gave me a lecture about wasting their time when I dared to phone.

Mintjulia · 10/06/2020 15:48

GP. (S)he’s the one with 7 years medical training.

Also able to prescribe treatment as necessary.

sel2223 · 10/06/2020 15:49

@Sandybval that's rather rude.
For anything infection or antibiotic related I would go the GP everytime. It wouldn't occur to me to go to the midwife, to 'run it by them' before then speaking to a doctor anyway.

Same here, except I was specifically told by my midwife to pass anything by her, and she would refer on to the GP, if neccessary and then was berated for doing so. The attitude of expecting women to know what to do, who to go to when HCPs seem to say different things is irritating. The GP then said to speak to the midwives, I said nope they have directed me here.

snapple21 · 10/06/2020 15:56

Midwives can't prescribe antibiotics so I agree with @badalice - best to phone GP

JLR12 · 10/06/2020 16:39

Phoned doctors and they put me to the midwife who recommended I called the maternity unit at the hospital and they are going to check me over tonight. X

Hope all is ok @JLR12 it's weird how much things vary between different areas.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 11/06/2020 02:38

@BadAlice genuine question, do you not think a midwife should be interested in abnormal discharge in pregnancy? OP didn’t tell us how many weeks she is, could easily be SROM with mec, which you should know much more about than a GP? And if not that then I would have thought midwives should provide guidance anyway?

TenThousandSpoons0 · 11/06/2020 02:38

Sorry meant to say - OP hope all ok with you, glad you’re getting it checked regardless who is checking for you :)

JLR12 · 11/06/2020 06:40

I have been checked over at the hospital as they were concerned it was my waters leaking but after been examined they are pretty confident it isn't. They have taken swabs to check for infection but they also said it could just be a normal thing for my pregnancy. I kept saying I felt such a fraud being there but they were lovely saying better to be safe than sorry. That's me hit 24 weeks today! Thank you everyone for the replies. X

@TenThousandSpoons0 Read my original response which says to telephone maternity triage if the appropriate number of weeks or GP if not. What I was saying is that no one should feel obliged to telephone their community midwife (I am more than happy to take calls and direct my patients to the right place but I don’t want them to feel like they hav toe wastd time!) who will like not get back I them swiftly or be able to provide treatment.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 11/06/2020 21:26

@BadAlice I’m so sorry I didn’t link that both those responses were yours, makes much more sense now!
