My baby girl is due July 20th, have spent lockdown getting all the things I need for her but want to make sure I have all of the essentials!

I have:

  • Crib (for 6 months up)
  • Chicco Next 2 Me
  • 4 sheets for each crib
  • Mattress protector
  • 6 swaddle blankets
  • 2 cellular blankets
  • About 15 babygrows in both newborn and 0-3 months
  • Same for vests (think I have more vests than 15)
  • A couple of pairs of socks in case
  • One hat for coming home
  • 20 cloth nappies with 20 inserts each (20 bamboo, 20 micro fibre, 20 charcoal)
  • Nappy liners
  • Cheeky wipes
  • Nappy bucket and bags for laundry
  • Travel system
  • One vibrating seat and one swing seat
  • Cloth sling
  • About 30 muslins
  • Nuby silicone breast pump
  • Breast feeding pillow
  • Reusable breast pads
  • Breast milk storage bags
  • Bottles for dad and family to occasionally feed her
  • Maternity pads and disposable underwear
  • Bluetooth speaker for white noise
  • Bits for bathing, creams, soap etc plus face cloths
  • Bath support
  • Towels
  • Changing bag
  • Sleeping bag 1.5 tog
  • Thermometer, nasal aspirator, brush
  • Nursing bras
  • Teethers
  • Dummys incase
  • Nest for supervised naps on the sofa

I think that's it, sorry for the huge list but I'd like to make sure I'm prepared!

Massive knickers? I never used disposal pants but did have some giant Primark ones for post birth that were great - wore them for the first month or so PP

A pack of disposal nappies and wet wipes? You're well stocked for cloth but might be handy to have for the first few disgusting poos after birth.

newmum0720 · 09/06/2020 22:53

Oh yeah, I do have massive knickers as well haha. I do also have disposable nappies as she won't fit the cloth ones for a little while and wet wipes for hospital.

Baby nail clippers/scissors?

You sound well prepared!

Willow4987 · 09/06/2020 22:55

I’d personally get another sleeping bag. I’ve always had 2 in each tog rating in case of sick or nappy leaks in the night

UrsulaSings · 09/06/2020 22:55

I think the only things I have my list that aren't on that list is a car sunshade, changing mat, and I also got some witch hazel pads to put on maternity pads for after birth to soothe things. Also a play mat.

Looks like a pretty comprehensive list though!

UrsulaSings · 09/06/2020 22:56

Oh and a sun hat

Willow4987 · 09/06/2020 22:56

Oh and have you got varying sleeve lengths in the vests?

I’ve got a mix of no sleeve, short sleeve and long sleeve dependent on the weather for bed time and also under clothes etc

UrsulaSings · 09/06/2020 22:58

What about sleep nursing bras you can wear at night? To hold breast pads in place in case you leak. But you'll probs just be able to wear your normal nursing bras through the night as well if they're comfy enough.

LusciousV · 09/06/2020 23:01

Dribble bibs?

newmum0720 · 09/06/2020 23:01

@UrsulaSings I actually do have all of those things too! Just forgot them from this list :) I bought liquid witch hazel from Amazon but I'm not sure I got the correct thing? It's 86% Witch Hazel and 14% Ethanol.

I also bought coconut oil for nipple cream (read it works great).

Car seat? Or is that under travel system?
Changing mat?
Monitor - if want one?
You seem pretty prepared, more than me and I have no excuse being my 4th!

newmum0720 · 09/06/2020 23:03

Ah so much I forgot to add! Yeah, I have lots of bibs, I think the nursing bras I have should be comfortable for sleep and the vests I have are long and short sleeved.

UrsulaSings · 09/06/2020 23:04

Sorry keep thinking of other things I've bought. Dont know if you're planning on getting nursing tops but I've got nursing pj top and some strappy bf tops to wear under normal clothes. Dont want to be hoiking up my tops with everything hanging out even in my own home at first!!

newmum0720 · 09/06/2020 23:05

@em90792 yep, car seat is with travel system.

I have a changing mat that attaches to her big crib and then a portable one in the changing bag. Not going to bother with a monitor until she's sleeping by herself.

Rear view car mirror so you can see her in the car?

Like someone else has said - car sunshades

Not that I suggest letting her sunbathe Grin.... But come august you may be wanting to get out and about so perhaps a sunhat and some baby factor 50?

If July/aug are scorchers... You may not use that many sleepsuits.... So make sure the vests are short sleeved.

A steriliser for the bottles and breast pumps?

Night light for her bedroom? Save you turning on a main light for feeding/settling.

welshweasel · 09/06/2020 23:06

Some disposable nappies for in hospital/first few days. Are the cloth nappies newborn specific ones?

GetTheSprinkles · 09/06/2020 23:08

1.5 tog would be quite heavy for now. My 6mo is currently sleeping in a 0.5 tog. I never used them when he was newborn though.

Nipple cream? Some people swear by it but I never used it.

You don't mention bibs but I presume you have them? My little one spat up so much the first few weeks.

A mobile for above the Next2Me is nice and if it plays music it can entertain them a little.

We've used our in ear thermometer quite a bit and I know some people like the thermometers that tell you the room & bath temperature but we never had them.

Do you have a sun shield for the car window and a parasol/similar for the buggy? It will be hot when you're walking her and you won't want the sun in her eyes.

You sound very well prepared!x

2007Millie · 09/06/2020 23:12

Seriously, if you've made a list like this, you'll be fine.

DS didn't get any where near having a list.

welshweasel · 09/06/2020 23:14

These threads always make me giggle - everyone has their list of essential stuff but really most people manage quite well without a lot of it. There is very little that can’t be sourced from amazon prime or a big 24 hour supermarket!

I’ve got two kids and don’t own a thermometer (or bath thermometer), never used baby bibs, car shade, parasol etc. Not to say they aren’t useful but it’s amazing what you manage without. My list of essentials would probably contain stuff that other people would find bizarre too!

2007Millie · 09/06/2020 23:38

And OP, you say one vibrating seat and one swing seat
Why are you not just getting one single seat that vibrates and swings?

newmum0720 · 09/06/2020 23:41

@2007Millie both were gifted so had no say in which we got haha

thanks for everyone's input so far, have added a couple more things on my 'to get' list.

A nightlight for your room for night feeds and changing is handy. Bath thermometer and ear thermometer. Something to sterilise bottles, you can get little microwave ones that take a single bottle if it's just for occasional use anyway.

newmum0720 · 09/06/2020 23:51

The bottles I have are the MAM self sterilising ones, so you just pop them in the microwave.

I also have dim wall lights in mine and babies room so not sure I'm going to need a night light?

0-3 are usually too big for the first few weeks. I'd also get a pack each of first size or up to one month vests and sleep suits.
DS was 7.9 and was in first size until he was 4 weeks.
One thing I did was leave an extra bag with spare clothes for baby and I and a few things like my hairdryer, extra pads/nappies, on the spare bed, so if I needed them DH could easily grab them, and didn't have to spend time searching the house or supermarket (and risk getting completely the wrong thing!) I was in for 8 days in the end so it was really useful to have everything I needed to hand.
You'll need nipple cream and lots of it.
Get more nursing bras than you think you'll need and lots and lots of muslins. DS used to dribble the last bit of feed in to my bra as he fell to sleep, so I wanted to change them often.
A soft wrap carrier is also very useful in the early days as it means you can get on with a few bits while baby naps on you.
I'd also recommend spritz for bits.

newmum0720 · 10/06/2020 01:04

@maryberryslayers as it says in my list, already have first size/newborn vests and babygrows, loads of muslins and a soft wrap :)
