Hey lovlies. I was just wondering what is your opinion on second hand stuff for babies. It's my first baby due in September and as lockdown is easing I am starting to think what I might need. My partner is very very very against me buying second hand stuff but I just cant justify (and afford) to buy everything new.
So my question is what is ok to buy second hand? Crib, clothes, buggy, swing etc
Also, I have read that if I buy second hand travel system I need to buy a new car seat because of safety issues? Is that really necessary?
The same with next to me crib, do I have to buy a new mattress separately?
If so, tbh the difference in price is not much
I am a bit confused and in two minds what to do.
I would love to save money and re-use things but on the other hand, is my partner right and we are not really saving much?

Would love to hear about what you bought second hand and your opinions

Much love xxx

Re car seats the cost partly comes down to whether you want a travel system or not. A lot of the travel system car seats are cheaper in terms of initial outlay but mean you will need a second seat at ~15 months.
Do you want the option for extended rear facing? Currently legally you can forward face at 15 months, there if evidence that rear facing till 4 years reduces injuries in a collision.
There are two classifications of car seats currently available R44 and i-size. I-Size is the newer testing method, there are a few differences. The R44 determines the seat sizes by weight and i-size by height. The i-size must be able to be installed by an isofix base and the I-size also tests the safety of a side impact collision. Often the I-size analogue is pricier. For comparison the maxi-cosi 360 spin is £200 for R44 and £280 for I-size.

If you go down the travel system route your choice will depend on the compatibility of your pram.
We picked up a non travel system extended rear facing i-size car seat from John Lewis at the weekend for £240 (I can't remember which one we went for in end)

Can I ask your opinions on a used sleepyhead? I know they are not reccomended for unsupervised sleep but I was thinking of getting one for daytime/downstairs naps?
Are they ok to buy second hand?

I'm not sure but I'd have thought they'd essentially be the same as mattresses and so you'd be best to buy new.

Interested to hear others views though.

I think the main risk that was of concern when I was looking was that if you buy second hand they may not be genuine and so could be dangerous. I did see one a while back in TK maxx that was a good price. Maybe with a rummage when they open again?
