As a FTM it seems like there are so many things out there it's difficult to know what will actually be really useful..and what you could live without that you're being suckered into. I'm due in Nov and trying to figure out things I might need for a winter bubs.

I know it's really dependant on how every baby is but I'm still curious..

What would be in your top 3 recommendations and top 3 buying regrets?

Thanks!!x

Oooh good thread.

Best recommendations:

  • BumGenius Freestyle nappies
  • Cheeky Wipes reusable wipes
  • Uppababy Vista pram (HUGE basket - could fit a full weekly shop in there)

Biggest mistakes / waste of money

  • changing table
  • clothes other than vests & babygros for first 6 months
  • specialist 'nursing' clothes
Betty98 · 05/06/2020 07:33

Second the (1) uppababy and (2) cheeky wipes, didn’t use reusable nappies at first so I wouldn’t put them on a must. My third would be (3) about a dozen sheets. I only had two or three and was washing them too often.

Waste of money:
A swingy chair thing (probably only used it twice!)

If I could recommend one “non-essential” thing to new mums it would be a Totter + Tumble playmat. Super useful from the getgo.

Following - great question to ask

december2020 · 05/06/2020 07:54

Shamelessly marking my spot 😶
FTM so don't have anything to contribute yet.

BadAlice · 05/06/2020 07:59

Invaluable:
-Bouncy chair. The only way I could eat dinner I shower for about 6 months was to put him in this!
-Tula baby carrier. We still use it now with our almost 2 year old occasionally. We used it every day in the first year I think. He very rarely went in a pushchair.
-Joie Every Stage car seat. It wasn’t very expensive, rear faces to 18kg, and should last until he doesn’t need a car seat anymore. (It doesn’t clip in and out of the car but we decided that as babies shouldn’t be in car seats for long periods of time anyway, this wasn’t essential)

We also used cloth nappies and wipes and would definitely recommend them.

Waste of money:
-White noise machine. We use white noise every night still but just put one of our phones in his room with Spotify playing. Ollie the owl turns off too soon!
-Most toys. He’s happier with a wooden spoon and some rice in a plastic bottle most of the time.
-Shoes. I had several pairs of baby shoes given to me for DS. I can honestly say they were never worn. Wait until baby is walking outside to buy shoes!

Littlegoth · 05/06/2020 08:05

Ftm placemarking!

Carolebaskins · 05/06/2020 08:06

If you are bottle feeding at any stage the Tommy tipee perfect prep machine is honestly the best thing ever, I say this after having 3 kids.

A bouncy chair for sure.

I can't think of a third item at the moment

chubbyhotchoc · 05/06/2020 08:06

Uppababy but I think I had the cruz because the basket didn't have that bar across ( someone correct me if I'm wrong)
Close caboo sling
Baby bundler nighties- far easier to navigate at night than babygros

Britannah · 05/06/2020 08:07

Top buys:

  • breast pump (we got a Mandela one!)
  • Ollie the Owl. I know a PP said it didn’t work for them but my DS is 18 months old and it still helps to sooth him asleep.
  • baby rocker chair. We spent some money we were given on an electric 4 moms one and it was amazing but slightly expensive and I’m sure any chair would do.
  • baby sling. A must if you like to go for walks

Regrets

  • A sleepyhead. They are so expensive and we only used it for a couple of weeks. Don’t know why we invested in one but some people swear by them!
  • Nursing clothes. I had a winter baby and just had a couple of nursing vests which I wore under tops and jumpers. Don’t waste money on a new wardrobe
kfcplease · 05/06/2020 08:07

Mia Zimmy on YouTube has great "holy grail" & "regrets" videos of things she bought. I found them helpful

Anni3getyourgun · 05/06/2020 08:11

We’re expecting DC2 in November and I’ve been trying to remember what we found most useful/useless first time round. I’m also trying to suggest different stuff to the above as they’re all really good suggestions!

Useful...
Buy more muslins than you ever think you’ll need! That’s one thing I remember reordering lots of and pre-baby I wasn’t sure why I’d need them!
Fleecy all-in-one for outside. We had a couple of those padded snowsuits but DD1 screamed when we put her in them. A fleecy one was great and much less bulky (Jojo sells them all year round).
Ergobaby carrier. We had a pram refuser. This saved us!

Useless...
Ewan the dream sheep (just kept us all awake/Velcro came undone)
Socks and scratch mitts (they’re all built on to babygros)
For me personally, breast pump and pads, nursing bras etc (I had to switch to formula early on so this stuff was wasted. And I’d not read up about formula preparation etc so that was all frantic and stressful when we had to make up the first bottle.)

I’m sure I’ll think of more!

kfcplease · 05/06/2020 08:11

She also has a video on Dupes or knockoffs. Savings are crazy!

chubbyhotchoc · 05/06/2020 08:13

Oh I'd add sleepyhead too -mine loved it and insisted on sleeping with her head on it long after she outgrew it.
Angel care breathing monitor ( Thus should be at the top really). Gave me lots of peace of mind.
Waste of money- any kind of outfit before about 6 months really, silver cross pram ( hated), play mats, bouncy chair and rocking chair ( wouldn't sit in either but others might be more accommodating lol), muslins, baby bath ( it was a pain to fill and she was scared of it, used a washing up bowl instead until old enough for the big bath), toys.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 05/06/2020 08:27

Great purchases:

My travel system was great! I had the Uppababy Cruz and used it until DD was at least 3. You’re right @chubbyhotchoc, the Cruz doesn’t have the bar across.

A cot top changing table saved our backs but didn’t take up loads of space.

Breast pump was used frequently because DD had a tongue tie and developed an excruciating latch. We were both happier when I expressed and she had the milk from a bottle.

Less than great purchases:

We bought a bouncy chair and DD hated it. She wouldn’t stay in it for longer than 5 minutes.

Baby shoes. Pointless and never fitted properly.

Moses basket. DD hated that too. We just used the carry cot from the Uppababy but she was very much a Velcro baby who always wanted to be near someone.

Things I’ve bought this time round:

Next to me Crib. I really hope this is a good purchase.

Sling. We had a baby carrier last time but I’ve got a proper wrap sling this time that I’m hoping to use for the school run and general around the house stuff.

CoolNoMore · 05/06/2020 08:31

Oooh, good thread!

Best Buys:

  1. Sling - I love the moby wrap, but if you can try out different styles, do.
  2. A video monitor. I poo-pooed this when my Mum suggested it, then she bought one anyway and it is lovely to be able to see that the baby is fine.
  3. Next-to-me crib. DS1 was a night-feed maniac and this made it borderline tolerable.

Waste of space and money:

  1. All those baby hats. One is enough; hoodies are even better!
  2. The Very Nice Let's Not Ask How Much Those Cost Wellies that my MiL bought for DS1. He grew out of them within a fortnight and spent the next six months in the charity shop wellies my Mum had found.
  3. Ewan the Dream Sheep. I had all my hopes pinned on you, Ewan. You let me down, man.
TheGirlWhoLived · 05/06/2020 08:43

I’ve been debating this so a lot a of thought has gone into my list!

Best:
1- lovely changing bag, with lots of pockets, matching mat and a bottle bit - I splurged on a more designer one and it made me happy whenever I used it or got it ready; it was a tiny bit of materialistic, shallow old me to hold onto in a world filled with all-consuming baby!

2- Dummies- dd1 was a crier. She had colic, she had teeth, she had eczema - but she loved her dummy and it kept her calm, we went through quite a variety before finding one that suited her (mam cherry in the end, then tommee tippee cherry)

3- i loved loved loved the tommee tippee steriliser, easy to use (even one eyed at 3 am in the morning) easy to clean, could get pretty bottles for later on when she took them out, teats were easy to clean and didn’t often break; you could size up easily.

4- (sorry) was a travel high seat from Jojo Maman Babe, you could take it to restaurants and it just ties onto the chair, like a booster! it also meant going to other people’s houses that weren’t so equipped for children was a breeze

Worst
1- sangenic nappy changing bin. Didn’t use it, didn’t need it, sat there looking forlorn and in the way

2- cotton wool and pure water for wiping bums. Please don’t fall for this, this will not get through Meconium... there are so many amazing and sensitive and now reusable wipes on the market that are SO much better than water

3- baby bath... stayed in it for about 2 weeks, it was always too much faff to get out; I’d get one of those new born bath seats now instead, they look much better!

MrsLully · 05/06/2020 09:01

TTC our second now, so I'm watching this with interest (I have forgotten everything Wink )!
Great one, OP!

Colouringinbook · 05/06/2020 09:04

Best:
Perfect prep machine
Video monitor
Shnuggle bath

Worst:
Bouncy chair - we used it but I never felt he enjoyed it!
Toys until he was about 1 year old
We had to buy a package to get the bits of furniture we wanted so some of that has just sat in the attic since it was purchased so that was a waste of money!

Clemmie83 · 05/06/2020 09:09

Great thread - following!

Colouringinbook · 05/06/2020 09:09

And another best:
Fold up changing mat - changing tables in cafés/pubs are grim and if you're in a fancy artisanal £4.50 for a flat white type place they are often non existent, so having a clean padded surface to put baby on is vital!

Betty98 · 05/06/2020 09:17

Ollie the Owl gets a massive thumbs up from me! I’d recommend no end. Also, you may want to get a gro egg room thermometer thing.

Dyra · 05/06/2020 10:07

Best

  1. Nuna Mixx travel system - I love my pram. Great looking. Easy to put up and down. Lots of features. Plus a big pram basket. Invaluable for a non-driving Mum who needs to get the weekly shop home by themselves.
  2. Short sleeved vests - Trying to put a baby grow on over a long sleeved vest is an absolute nightmare. They'll be inside most of the time where the double layer on the arms isn't really needed. Just make it easy for yourself.
  3. Sleep bags - No more worrying about baby going under the blankets or kicking them off at night. Amazing things. Baby might need to get a bit bigger initially before you can use them, but you won't go back to blankets once you can.
  4. (For the future). IKEA Antilop Highchair. Cheap. Easy to clean. You really don't need more than that in a highchair.

Worst

  1. Milton 3 in 1 Steriliser - It's a perfectly good steriliser, but if you need to sterilise something, get a cold water system. So much easier. For us, we never needed it. Breastfeeding (fortunately) went well. Baby rejected bottles and dummies. Then we did BLW, so no jars of food to heat. Just took up space in my kitchen.
  2. Nuna Leaf - I love Nuna stuff as a rule, but I cannot recommend the chair at all. Takes up so much room, expensive, and doesn't even come with a toy bar! Sure baby can use it as they get older, but there's still the question of where to put it! I wish we'd never bought the damn thing.
  3. Scratch mitts - Most baby grows have them built into the sleeves, and it's pretty much exclusively what baby is going to be wearing for the first few months anyway.
  4. Outfits for babies before 3 months old - Leading on from the scratch mitts, outfits do nothing more than add stress. They look adorable, but usually always take more effort to get on. Then, the second the outfit is on, babies invariably take the opportunity to immediately have a nappy blowout or vomit like they have never done before. Then you have to take the whole stinking thing off, all the while baby is wailing because they're cold and wet. Then you wind up putting a baby grow on them
Caspianberg · 05/06/2020 10:49

Baby is one month old, our purchases so far:

Best

  1. baby bjorn bouncer - its pricey but worth it. Its so light and it gently bounces from babies own weight from birth. can carry it around in one hand and baby the other if I need to put him down somewhere different in house. He goes in it when we eat, shower, prep meals etc so hands free. I have even used in the garden already.

2.Fabe lab 120x120 large Muslins. They are bamboo based, so soft even after washing and just air dried. They come in much nicer colours than most brands. Weused every night to swaddle baby to sleep, as playmat/changing mat outside, and sunshade pegged up.

  1. reusable nappies and wipes. We have 50 cheeky wipes, 15 tots bots all in one, and 4 night nappies. That has been plenty and fitted from birth. Far easier not having to keep buying them, and no worries shops might sell out etc atm.

Also recommend bunging changing mat on top of chest of drawers. Means no bending down, but also no need for separate changing table. drawers will last forever.

Worst:

  1. Dummies - so far baby has refused to take various types
  2. newborn clothing - at 8lb8 born, newborn never fitted, size1 month lasted 1 week. Hes almost outgrown 0-3 month in most of the sleepsuits as long legs. So would suggest buying mainly 0-3 months, with just a cheap pack 1month multipack incase needed. Will need 3-6 much sooner than expected (so wouldn't buy seasons ahead as may be wrong size)
Chichz · 05/06/2020 11:04

Very interesting thread, thanks OP! Grin

Also nothing to add as a FTM too. We have splashed out on a Chicco next-to-me crib and hoping we won't regret it!

Most other things have been gifted so feel very lucky.

Minkies13 · 05/06/2020 11:32

Best:

Next to me crib
Sleepyhead
Google Nest baby monitor. My husband loved this as he could watch her on his phone at work.
