Can they tell the gender of baby at 12 wk scan?

possibly, but quite unlikely, would depend massively on the quality of the machine, and the skill of the person using it

also , i thought that the baby's genitalia were not really obviously formed until around 16 weeks, and even at 20 weeks it can be difficult to tell sometimes..

I went with a client to a 4d scan at 16 weeks, done by consultant obs. he would not say either way what gender the baby was, so it can be very difficult earlier on.

If its just a normal NHS scan then definately no.

However a friend of mine went to a posh private clinic in London and she found out at 12 weeks.
It was right too.

Yes they do one at 20 weeks which is when you normally find out the sex.

In some areas you dont get a 12 week scan, just a 20.
You might have to check with your midwife if your local hospital tell you the sex of the baby as some NHS hospitals wont tell you.

I thought that the 20wk scan was more routine and more important that the 12wk scan. at Glasgow not doing a 20wk scan.

Just to add that in Edinburgh you also only get a 12 week scan and no 20 week scan (unless you pay £150 )- maybe it is a Scottish policy?

ooh, thanks for all that. I think my local hosp. has changed policy - it used to be that they didn't tell sex (highly muslim area) but will now upon request. However, if I don't end up having a 20 wk (I am an elderly primavigada, or whatever, so I don't know if they do routinely or not) I might just have to be surprised!

At my 12 wk scan for DS 1 which was at a normal NHS hospital, I saw "Bits" which were definitely not umbilical chord etc. They had just happened to scan past his arse in a way that was helpful. They refused to go back and look when I requested confirmation but did confirm at 20 wk scan.

Similarly at 12 wk scan for DD1 which was a high tech private scan (due end Nov) I saw a distince LACK of "bits" and at 20 wk scan they confirmed 99.9% female.

So I'd say yes, you can tell, but you have to have a bloodly good squint and the equippment / conditions of the scan be clear.

In America they often seem to tell people around 12 weeks, there was a lot of speculation on a forum I used to frequent, as to its accuracy...I ended up doing a lot of reading on google and it turned out that in studies done, most (98%) of the 'guesses' or tries by the sonographers being tested, were correct at 12 weeks.

I know there are policies here to prevent them getting into trouble over it but yes, if you are experienced and know what to look for, and if infant is in prime position, you can tell. Mostly. I think.

(if you manage to find a website with pictures of early external genitalia, they do look very similar indeed up till around that point. So Goodness knows how they tell!)

I found out at 13 week private scan. One week earlier the NHS scan said too early. My 20 week scan confirmed what they said at 13 week scan - will have to wait till 40 weeks to know for sure, but they seemed fairly certain.

sleepfinder I think you will find that if you read my link within my link that at 12wks a girls "bits" are as big as if not bigger than boys "bits". If they do tell you sex at 12wks it is based on the angle of the bits not the presence or absence of bits.

i wanted to find out the sex of my baby but they said that its too early so il have to wait till 20 weeks scan !this is my first child so im really excited and cant wait to find out!

Why do you nees to know at 12 weeks ?

As someone previously said, they can tell you with 70+% certainty at the 12 week scan what the sex of the fetus is by the angle of the genital tubercle (not whether or not one sees "bits"). Now, whether or not they will do this, or feel comfortable doing this is another issue.

I found out i was having a boy at twelve weeks, then my 18 week scan said its a girl so i reckon you should wait so you don't get to excited until its more accurate, both scans were done by a specialist
