Just wondering what I need to pack for active labour and after? I’m trying to source long baggy black buttoned up nightwear but it’s quite hard!

Boohoo is your friend here! Maternity nighties currently on sale (or they were the other day).

I gave birth in the heatwave last year. Honestly all you will want are super super comfy big bras, big cotton PJ shorts and vest tops. If you pack a load of those you'll be good to you! Remember flip flops Smile

Wolfgirrl · 03/06/2020 21:42

*good to go

Izabela86 · 03/06/2020 21:45

I was thinking about wearing some dark nightie (or a bikini top if I can have a water birth). I bought three nighties in total (a cotton reach dark navy nightie from M&S and a maternity nightie from LaRedoute, and some cheap one from Amazon).
Obviously, they are not the most glamours nighties you can find Smile when are you due?

peajotter · 03/06/2020 21:46

An old T-shirt for labour I think. Something I didn’t mind binning afterwards.

Loose nightie for afterwards.

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 03/06/2020 21:46

I have always worn a cheap Primark type button down nightie in labour, and a tankini top for my water births. Afterwards a clean nightie and giant pants! You may only be in for a few hours afterwards if all goes well, and I always forget just how hot the labour wards are so pack light things so you don’t overheat.

LittleBrownMouse1 · 03/06/2020 21:53

I took dark nighty (didnt wear in the end) and button down PJ tops with lounge pants which were super comfy, I took socks rather than slippers. Flipflops and towel for showering (plus a bobbles and/or shower cap if dont plan to wash hair every time you shower - I was in for a couple of nights) Maternity sleep bras from JoJo (didnt invest in the fitted ones until my milk supply settled, big knickers. Wore leggings and long loose fitting top to leave. Hope that helps Smile

Megan2018 · 03/06/2020 21:55

In labour - one of my husbands tshirts. Really soft cotton and huge on me.

After (hospital and home)- I had 2 long maternity nightshirts (from Mothercare so that’s no help) with button access and a pair of maternity pj’s with button access from Asda.
I never leaked so could have got away with any colour, but I had black/navy

Very lightweight cheap dressing gown from
primark. It was Sept and boiling out (and in).

RedFoz · 03/06/2020 21:56

I had a dark blue nightdress for labour from Asda I think. I would have liked a proper maternity one but I couldn't find any, I left it late.
I thought it would be a bit short (being outside of my own home iyswim) but I honestly didn't care at all. I was just glad it wasn't thick material. I also had a thin robe, more like the one you get at a spa, also from Asda. Which was great for during, when I wanted to cover up and after on the wards.

The post birth ward was honestly the hottest place on earth. So I wore a strappy top, shorts and flip flops. Big knickers obviously.

Also I didn't really enjoy the birth and couldn't stand to see any of the clothes I wore during it, so I was glad I didn't buy anything expensive.

Selfsettling3 · 03/06/2020 21:58

First labour a hospital gown. Second one a bra. I wore Pjs afterwards.

Babdoc · 03/06/2020 22:00

Long time ago now, but I’ve never owned a nightie. Had a hospital gown for the labour and went home six hours later. Ditto for my second child. Why would you want to get blood and amniotic fluid all over your own nice clothes?!

FourPlasticRings · 03/06/2020 22:01

I have a black nightie from Amazon that has buttons along the boob area for labour. It's from happy mama and was only about £15. I had normal comfy pyjamas for afterwards- bring a plastic bag for your labour wear as it's likely to get all bloody/wet.

TimeWastingButFun · 03/06/2020 22:01

I had a long nightie for labour and very comfrey stretchy loungewear (basic cheap M&S) for afterwards. And a cosy short cardigan - no matter how warm you get the shivers after!

yukka · 03/06/2020 22:06

I had a black breastfeeding nightdress for birth, except she came too quick and i had no time so was wearing a cotton t shirt style mat dress which worked just as well 😀

For afterwards I had my maternity leggings, big big knickers, and a pregnancy t shirt and cardigan and flip flops, I have birth in July last year.

Just think comfy, easy to get on and off, perhaps dark colours in case of any post birth bleed leakage.

sarahc336 · 03/06/2020 22:07

I was in the pool so just in my bra Grin and afterwards I had a loose nighty to wear and big pants to hold in your big maternity pads Smile I think a lot of women feel quite hot in labour and end up wanting to strip off so something light I'd say x

endoflevelbaddy · 03/06/2020 22:08

Everything I'd taken had been vomited on before I even got as far as delivery 🤦🏻‍♀️

So I'd take lots of button front nighties so you can wear them during and after if needs be. Dressing gown as well for after to cover up if moving about the ward.
I had EMCS then ELCS with DD2 and had catheters so pjs / loungewear no use.

Raaaa · 03/06/2020 22:10

In labour hospital gown and afterwards a set of comfy loose pyjamas from home and then for the way home the leggings and top I wore in

Megan2018 · 03/06/2020 22:11

@Babdoc I knew I had to stay in for 24hrs (GD) and wanted to be comfy. I then chose to have 3 nights in an amazing birth unit for postnatal care and wanted to feel comfy there. Not everyone goes straight home.

Plus DH’s Tshirt was just really soothing, it’s lovely fabric and too small for him as it got shrunk so I appropriated it for labour and felt lovely in it. I’ve kept it in the memory box. It got very little skank on it actually so washed fine.

I’m still wearing the maternity nightdresses now as still BF and bed sharing 9 months on.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 03/06/2020 22:19

Big big black knickers from primark (I quite liked them actually - looked like Victorian bloomers!), a long primark vest / just a nursing bra, and a nice multicoloured but darkish summer dressing gown - plus slip on shoes! Dressing gown and slip on shoes Is all you need really for after. I was in a baggy dress before, but had an elective c section so didnt really matter.

annie9876 · 03/06/2020 22:30

I had 3 sets. A labour gown which buttoned up at the back (to allow an epidural to be administered should I have needed it - I didn't intend to but I did in the end) in navy, a gown that buttoned at the front with a matching dressing gown in red wine and a pjs and dressing gown set navy and floral (top was suitable for BF)

All were from happy mama and I think the 3 sets cost just over £50 all together.

Never got to wear the pjs in hospital as I had a catheter but I wear them all the time now (I'm actually wearing them now Grin)

I was changed out of the labour gown, put into a hospital gown and the hospital disposed of it for me as I was rushed to theatre straight after the birth with a very large haemorrhage and it was ruined.

woodenboxes · 03/06/2020 22:36

I remember really overthinking this when I was pregnant, but when I arrived at hosp it was really hot (August heatwave) and I just peeled off all my clothes pretty much instantly. And I'm REALLY not normally that uninhibited st all! Ended up in the birthing pool, so not clothes there obvs. Afterwards I had a front buttoned knee length nightdress/nightshirt which was perfect.

Greengrapes1357 · 03/06/2020 22:42

During labour both times larger sized cheap primark nightie because they can be cut off / thrown in the bin if needed.
Both times I was in hospital a while and wore dark leggings and loose fitting tops in the day as easy to breastfeed.

Yerroblemom1923 · 03/06/2020 22:44

Amazingly you just end up stripping off in.labour. But afterwards long nightshirt with buttons down the front for ease of feeding and big knickers.

FourPlasticRings · 04/06/2020 05:20

"Amazingly you just end up stripping off in.labour."

Not everyone does this. I was clothed throughout.

Musicalmistress · 04/06/2020 06:04

I had some lovely T-shirt nighties packed - in reality I gave birth in my grotty maternity bra & nothing else.
