We like the name Theodore for a boy, but I also really like Theo and Ted as shortened names. Would you use the nickname Theo or Ted?

I love Theo x

Clevs · 03/06/2020 20:37

Depends on the surname but probably Theo.

june2007 · 03/06/2020 20:39

Teddy rosevelt was a Theordore wasn,t he? But I prefer to shorten to Theo. Which ever you prefer.

panicstationsready · 03/06/2020 20:39

Theo first or Teddy/Ted.

Keepingcomfy · 03/06/2020 20:40

My mind goes to Teddy

thewreckofthehesperus · 03/06/2020 20:41

Teddy was my first thought

WendyHoused · 03/06/2020 20:42

Theo or Teddy. But mostly Theo.
Lovely name

Chillipeanuts · 03/06/2020 20:42

Theo is lovely but so is Teddy.

Maybe let him chose when he’s older. Would be nice to have a choice.

Delbelleber · 03/06/2020 20:43

Theo. Ted would be from Edward imo

TheVanguardSix · 03/06/2020 20:44

I have a Theo (he's 18 now).
Teddy and Theo are both lovely.
When he was a baby (born in the States) we called him Teddy and Theo. But in the UK, he's been Theo.

TheVanguardSix · 03/06/2020 20:47

Yes, just to add: Ted actually is the American diminutive for Theodore. If I met a Ted nowadays in the UK, I would not assume he is Edward. In this day and age, I'd assume his name is Theodore because people in the UK now use Ted for both Edward and Theodore.

mouse1234567 · 03/06/2020 20:51

So interesting seeing responses. I would never think of Ted or Teddy being short for Theodore, but it seems like lots of others would. I would think Theo.

Ninkanink · 03/06/2020 20:53

Theo. Although teddy is nice too, and is a well established nickname for Theodore (look up why teddy bears are called that...).

TimeWastingButFun · 03/06/2020 20:55

I would prefer Ted, but would have to pre-empt what everyone else will call him. It's likely everyone will call himTheo so if for instance you'd prefer Ted then it's possibly a name only you would use. With our two we chose names that had only one shortened option AND that we both liked. As it happens at 12 and 9 both them and their friends still use the long names.

ItsSpittingEverybodyIn · 03/06/2020 20:57

Theo, I really don't like Ted!

DamnYankee · 03/06/2020 21:06

Theo and the Teddy

Ted makes me think of TEDTalks

xXDazedXx · 03/06/2020 21:12

I think you could go either way but I think Teddy is really cute.

Frlrlrubert · 03/06/2020 21:13

I prefer Theo, I teach one who goes by Theo and one who goes by Teddy.

Itwasntme1 · 03/06/2020 21:20

Thor. 🥰

titchy · 03/06/2020 21:23

I'd go with Ted simply because Theo might end up as 'Feo' (shudder).

Britannah · 03/06/2020 22:06

We were considering Theordore for DS with the plan to call him Teddy however we felt that naturally (unless you really push it!) it would be shortened to Theo and even when he is older he could have opted for Theo and it’s so different from Teddy that we decided against it in the end. We ended up calling him something entirely different!! X

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 03/06/2020 22:18

Could honestly go either way!

My teenage son is Edmund, nn Ned, known to his mates variously as Eddy, Teddy, Nedulous & Mundo.

So I'd go with the name, call him whichever nn you prefer, but accept that it won't necessarily be the diminutive he takes into adult life.

FWIW my son definitely prefers the nn (Ned) his father & I had in mind, although he's quite relaxed about being called Eddy etc.

I think given that Ted & Theo are both rather cool, I'd be tempted to chill & let either/both evolve naturally.
