Pregnant but on furlogh

Hi everyone!

So I have been on furlogh from work since 1st of April. We get a monthly update to advise us they don't expect us back until at least another month so by the end of this month I'll have been off for 3 months.

Anyway, I found out I was pregnant mid April and have my 12 week scan next week. I plan on telling my manager about it if everything is OK at the scan.

I have only been with the company since August last year so I am really concerned about telling them and whether or not they will hold it against me.

My company is still operating with about just under half of the staff at home on furlogh currently.

They have not mentioned redundancies or the like at all and from what I have been told, have never held redundancies since they started business 30ish years ago.

I'm really just worrying and would like some advice on possible outcomes?

@tinad91 would it be possible for you to hold out on telling your employer until you are back to work? I think legally you don't have to say until like 15 weeks until you're due or something like that?

Or perhaps wait until you've been at the company for a year in August?

I'm sure it'll be fine and it's good that the employer hasn't suggested they would make redundancies. They can't discriminate against you because you're pregnant.

Personally I would delay telling the employer until you are off furlough/know what is going on, but that is entirely my opinion and I'm sure others will think differently!

It all depends on your employer (how good/nice they are), what job you do (like if an active job I guess you should tell them sooner!) etc.

Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

As per above post, hold off, it's 15 weeks before due date, so don't have to tell them until you're 25 weeks - although may be obvious by then

I agree with the above comments, but then there is the other side to it all which is precautions for return, many work places are trying to put extra precautions in place for pregnant or high risk staff for their returns and you may have a job which requires additional health and safety checks. Although my job is office based and I sit at a desk they still would like to complete two Heath and safety checks whilst pregnant and with covid they are at lot more conscious of this. I don't think it should have any impact on your position in the company as they risk falling under the unfair dismissal as you're pregnant but only if you tell them. There's so much to take into account and there is no right answers only you will know your companies policies and whatever makes you feel most comfortable is right. Best of luck.
