I am 37+5.

I "think" my mucus plug came out last wednesday night, but no sign of my waters breaking.

FIL is due to take DD swimming on Sunday. MIL normally goes with them to get DD changed, but she is away for the weekend. I would love to go in the pool to but MIL has said that she does not think I can go in

Can I go in or will I just have to sit on the side and watch?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry winnie, I have no idea, but if you aren;t sure can you not give your mw a quick ring and ask?

WinnieThePooh · 21/09/2007 18:30

Good idea MrsF.

I should have thought of that myself.

i did after mine had gone with ds2 and ds3, it went about a week before i went into labour with each of them.

the baby is still enclosed in the amniotic sac so totally safe from infection, or at least that is what my midwife told me.

so you can still have baths, go swimming etc, they do say once your waters have broken you should NOT go swimming or have a bath. hth

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I will give my midwife a call to check with her.

hmmm, not sure about this but chlorine is a cleaning substance so maybe okay afterall...

I think I would be more worried about getting dry/dressed afterwards what with stray pools of water, slippy floors etc.

No! nothing that could cause infection - and swimming pools are not clean.

lulumama · 21/09/2007 20:06

nonametoday is a midwife and she thinks it is ok.

also, the OP is not sure that her plug has gone

when the waters are intact the sac keeps infection out ...

sleepfinder · 21/09/2007 20:14

why risk it?

lulumama · 21/09/2007 20:33

it depends on how much of a risk it is...

IIRC< and i may be wrong, your plug can reform if you do not go into labour....

certainyl worth checking with her own MW

The mucus plug is a gelatinous substance that basically "plugs up" your inner cervix, or os. This serves as a barrier against bacteria to help keep your baby safe. You can lose your mucus plug over a period of weeks, with just more gelatinous mucus when you wipe, or it can come out more "whole", looking like a big glob of snot. Your plug can also reform repeatedly.

When there is cervical change, small blood vessels (capillaries) break. The cervix is VERY vascular during pregnancy, so the opening of the cervix (or after sex) can create "bloody show". You can have bloody show without an apparent loss of the "plug".

Some women never notice a loss of a big plug. It's much more gradual for many women, as the cervix thins and shortens prior to labor.

Sometimes the plug - or the mucus lost gradually - can be pink, red or brown streaked. This is not really considered "show", but it does indicate some cervical change.

Hi-
I lost a big lump of my plug a couple of weeks ago (I am 35 wks at the moment)... anyway MW said it was fine so long as no blood, which there wasnt, and that my body would just replenish it. I have since been swimming with my DD, no problems.

Losing plug doesnt automatically mean labour is about to happen, but if blood streaked then that is more of a concern.

HTH

WinnieThePooh · 21/09/2007 21:01

Thanks everyone,

There has been no blood as all.

I will give my midwife a call tomorrow to check with her.

Nothing to add here Winnie! I personally would go as long as my waters hadn't broken as thats what protects the baby. But sensible to check with mw I think...
