Pregnant with Copper Coil in Situ

Hi everyone! I'm brand new to Mumsnet :)

I am currently almost 10 weeks pregnancy with copper coil in situ and am really worried about leaving it in. The first gyny I saw seemed to think all would be fine (she seemed really not worried about leaving it in and said she delivered lots of babies with the coil in with no issues). But the second Doctor I saw was quite concerned and said leaving the coil in comes with high risk of infection, miscarriage in 2nd Trimester and premature birth.

The problem for me is, the coil is too close to the sac so taking it out now would mean a high risk of miscarriage. But the doctor gave me no inclination of any statistics - if I leave it in, what are my chances.

Would appreciate any and all feedback and advice from anyone who has been in the same position!!

I also have quite heavy cramping this week (all week) and accompanied by some bleeding. I attended the emergency unit in the middle of the night and they checked, baby is fine. But a bit more bleeding today with cramping. So naturally I'm in absolute panic!!

Thanks everyone :)

Omg that's just worried the life out of me, thought they was meant to be 98% effective 🙈

I would leave it in. It would be worse to take it out now. I'm worried now as I rely on a copper coil, for birth control!

Haha yes well I did too! I had it in 4 years, no problems at all and loved it. But fell pregnant 10 weeks ago - I think it's actually 99% effective !!

I was advised that the risk of leaving it in and the risk of removing it was roughly equal.
This was nearly 30 years ago however.
I did have several bleeds over that pregnancy, no reason for the bleeding was found at the time, although I did find out later that I have a bicornuate uterus, and that does increase the risk of bleeding. Also found that the coil was in one half of the uterus, and the baby in the other. Shock

@pinktransit did you have yours removed? They've told me because of where my coil is in relation to the sac (very close) that taking it out now would mean a high risk of miscarriage - but they haven't given me any real idea of the risks of leaving it in. Feeling very in the dark so need to call a consultant tomorrow!

No, I left it where it was - as the risk was the same, it felt that leaving it was the easier choice.
It appeared I think the day after the baby was born, and didn't cause any issues. The bleeding may have been coil related, or may have been bicornuate uterus related, I never did find out definitely.

How worrying! I can only say that my mother was a midwife and delivered quite a few with them wrapped around limbs. Not great but the babies were fine.

Completely unrelated and no help to you at all but I've got the fear now lol I rely on my coil 😱
