When to call doctors?

Over the last few days I’ve found out I am pregnant, I’m 3w+4. I’m not even past my period due date yet but the tests are definite!
This is my second pregnancy, my first was in February which ended in a miscarriage at 5 weeks.
When do I call doctors to get booked in for scans etc? I don’t want to call too early in case I lose this one too but then don’t want to call too late and miss things.
Do I get more checks from the doctors as I’ve previously miscarried?

I’m so worried I’m going to lose this one too, trying to remain level headed... not too excited, not too cautious if that makes sense!

Around 8 weeks will be your first contact with the midwife for your booking appointment. In my trust you wouldn't get extra scans after one miscarriage unfortunately, you have to have had three before they'll give you extra scans but that may be different in different places. Congratulations!

I rang my gp around 4 1/2 weeks and referred myself to midwife as per instructions. I was contacted by midwife who booked my first appointment for 8 weeks, so you have a few weeks to wait if you want to be more sure about the pregnancy.

Sorry for your loss and congrats. I booked a telephone consult with GP a few days after my BFP. (I did tests each day because they were very faint, so wanted to be sure). He gave me the details to self-refer to the midwifery team, but each area is different, so your GP might refer. I'd call soon, just to get your midwifery referral done. Even though I did the midwife referral at 4+2, I wasn't contacted till after 10 weeks!

Assuming you are in the UK, they would rarely do a viability scan early, just after 1 loss. Especially with the current crisis, they are only scanning emergency cases. (unfortunately I MC a few weeks ago and even with heavy bleeding etc they wouldn't scan me, as I wasn't deemed an emergency!)
Speaking to your GP this week wont change any outcomes. You also won't get any further GP checks from 1 MC either.

Best of luck this time around Flowers

Thank you @RyanStartedTheFire and @Sanch1

@Elouera I’m so sorry for your loss - that’s so awful they didn’t deem your situation as an emergency. Thank you for your kind words Flowers

I think I might book in for a private scan somewhere at some point just to bridge the gap between then and the NHS one!

Generally a viability scan is done between 7-8 weeks BTW. Old enough to hopefully see a heart beat, but not too close to the 12 week scan. \it is still tiny though at 7 weeks, and the farther along you are, the more you will see x

Hello OP, if you go to your NHS trust website on maternity page, most usually have an online self-referral form, cutting out the need to go to GP.

I waited until I was 6w to self-refer as I'd had a couple of CP and early MC. About a week after emailing the form to them I got a booking appt letter through the post.

MinesALatte · 31/05/2020 12:15

@Elouera who does viability scans? Sorry if that’s a really stupid question 🙈

@pottypotamus thank you for that tip, I’ll have a look!

@MinesALatte- Private scanning places will do viability scans. I'm sure they'll take your money from 4 weeks, but wait till at least 7. Otherwise, you will be lucky to see a black blob and no heart beat. Just google ultrasounds in your area and shop around. I think some start at £45, but most seem to be closer to £70. Really depends where you are though. They often have a calendar on their sites. You put in your LMP and it will tell you ALL the different scans they offer and what dates you can book them in.

Best of luck x

Hi. Every trust differs- I called my GP two days after I found out (about 4+1 weeks) and had a appointment with midwife four days later (4+6). May as well call yourself and find out as the replies on this thread are all different
