Nhs Scan Charges

Hi everyone!

I'm just being rather nosey and wondering where you're all based and whether or not you have to pay for your NHS ultrasound pictures?

I live in highland and received a letter along side my scan date informing me there is a charge of £5 for one scan picture or £10 for 3 pictures! Just curious if all areas charge for pictures? I'm quite surprised the charges haven't been scrapped at present seen as partners/support aren't able to attend due to restrictions!

My letters all have the charges on, including car park charges, but on arrival they aren’t in place xx

MariaDingbat · 29/05/2020 11:11

I'm in NI and was given 5 scan pics at my 12 week scan yesterday. The was no mention of a cost either in the letter or when I was there. I can't believe they charge people for scan pictures!

goatley · 29/05/2020 11:11

Going back 23 years - yes I had to pay a few £ for a scan picture.

Why would the charges for the photos be scrapped? They still have to print them out.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 29/05/2020 11:12

£6 per scan pic but I was naughty and never paid just left with my pic. I thought it was wrong to charge. £6 is a lot of money for folks on a low income

Harriett123 · 29/05/2020 11:14

Yeah my letter said charges for the photos. Think it was £6 but cant really remember. I rushed to get to an atm the morning of the scan to make sure I could get the photos. The ultrasound technician ( sorry dont know their actual title) just gave them to me. No one asked for money. On my last scan at 32 weeks I saw a little box on the wall saying voluntary contribution for ultrasound photos. So guess in my hospital it was down to what if anything them parents want to give.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 29/05/2020 11:14

Always had to pay £4 ish got car parking
Everyone should have a scan pic no one should leave without because they can't pay

Frazzlerock · 29/05/2020 11:14

I've had 7 pregnancies and never been charge for one scan photo.

This is in London (two different boroughs) and in North Kent and 2 were 15 and 11 years ago, the others have been over the past 4.5 years.

This current pregnancy I've had loads of scans due to recurrent MMC and a haematoma and never been any mention of paying for the photos.

BeHappyAndSmile · 29/05/2020 11:15

I had to pay at my 12 week (just after lockdown started) but not at my 20 week. Think I was meant to but the lovely sonographer let me out without paying.

SKP86 · 29/05/2020 11:17

Mine was free as they are waiving the charge because partners can't attend.

donkey86 · 29/05/2020 11:19

£5 per picture here, but it’s on an honesty system.

ComDummings · 29/05/2020 11:19

It’s £6 a pic here

Oreoreo · 29/05/2020 11:21

I’m in central Scotland and there was no mention of charges on any of my scan letters or anything. At the appointment they gave me 5 pics, never mentioned charges then either. Maybe it varies place to place?

DreamingofSunshine · 29/05/2020 11:25

I paid £5 a picture or three for £10.

PintOfGin · 29/05/2020 11:29

It was £6 a picture when I had my son in 2017 but I wasn't aware I had to pay before I turned up at the hospital! I couldn't afford it as it was a week before my pay day and had £0 in the bank as we were really struggling on a low income, but I was too embarrassed to just say I couldn't afford it, so I just pretended that I had left my purse at home. So I walked away without a scan picture feeling really upset and embarrassed never the less.

Clemmie83 · 29/05/2020 11:31

I had my 12 week scan last week and was given 4 pics for free, they're not charging at the moment as partners can't attend.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/05/2020 11:34

We get no pics at our London hospital- we get to take pics of the screen. I was happy to pay but not an option

bee222 · 29/05/2020 11:34

£5 a picture or 3 for £10. I think the charges are fair.

Roryrunner · 29/05/2020 11:34

It's fine to pay, the printed pictures are not medical essentials. I don't think the NHS can justify giving them away as souvenirs, their job is to provide health for the nation not "make memories".

mylittlesandwich · 29/05/2020 11:36

Central Scotland here too. I had so many scans last year when pregnant with DS and there was no charge. It definitely varies from hospital to hospital.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 29/05/2020 11:37

£12 for 4 pictures at my hospital but they print out way more than that. You have to show the voucher from the machine before they give the pictures.

Shuckle · 29/05/2020 11:47

East Midlands, I never received a letter for my 12 week scan in Feb it was only when I rang to chase the appointment they told me my scan was in fact the following day, they gave me 4 pics and no mention of payment so I took the pictures and left happily.
When my 20 week scan letter came through it did actually say that scan pictures are £10 (for how many I don't know) but by the time it got to the scan they had waived photo charges because of the C-word so again didn't have to pay, no idea if I would have been asked to pay in "normal times". Speaking to others due around the same time, it seems lots of hospitals say they charge but in reality, give you your photos for free.

Superscientist · 29/05/2020 11:55

My hospital charges £3.50 a picture but is not charging for parking due to covid (or at least weren't last time I was there).

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 29/05/2020 12:11

Aberdeenshire, when I had my last in 2018 it was a donation box.

savehalloween · 29/05/2020 12:12

Wales and had to pay £3 for a token or something like that I think.

LozEliza · 29/05/2020 12:31

The letters are just standard. The charges for my area are the same. When you get there they don't charge you.
