Help ...

So since being pregnant my two front teeth have become loose and honestly it's making my anxiety so bad! I've never suffered with my teeth before. I obviously brush twice daily, floss and use mouthwash I'm just panicking in case they fall out 😱 I tried to ring the dentist but due to everything that is going on they can't see me. Has this happened to anybody else? Will they tighten back up? I was told I need to leave them and don't wriggle them etc so trying my hardest not to touch them 😭

Ah bless you. I haven't had this but I did have a large filling randomly fall out last week.
I never knew pregnancy affected your teeth so much!
Now I'm trying to drink lots of milk and just manage the pain till I can see a dentist.

Hi op. Dentist here.

Pregnancy doesnt affect your teeth so much.

Teeth dont just become loose overnight. How loose are we talking? Teeth have some natural movement in them, could you be mistaking that?

Have you knocked them? Could you be grinding them?

Im assuming that you have no history of gum disease?

UncleFoster · 28/05/2020 11:50

Sorry that post was like 20 questions Grin

So sorry to be rude and jump in OP but @UncleFoster please can I ask how much milk I should drink for healthy calcium levels whilst pregnant? I hate dairy products but can tolerate milk if I have to as I don't fancy supplements

sel2223 · 28/05/2020 12:04

@UncleFoster my dentist told me just last week that pregnancy can affect your teeth and gums. She said that's why you get free dental care for pregnancy and a year afterwards.
She was the one who advised upping my calcium intake, is that wrong?

Destroyedpeople · 28/05/2020 12:06

Of course pregnancy affects your teeth and gums that is why dental care is free for pregnant women.

UncleFoster · 28/05/2020 12:16

Pregnancy can affect your gums. It can worsen existing gum inflammation, some pregnant women get very inflammed gums that bleed. But this is temporary it wont cause your teeth to become loose.

@tiredandemosh1 you need about 1000mg of calcium a day I think which is about 800ml of milk. However calcium will come from other foods like fish, green leafy veg, fortified bread/cereals etc. So its unlikely milk is your only source of calcium. The british deitetics association have really good advice sheets on calcium sources

@UncleFoster I will have a look, thank you Smile

@UncleFoster thanks for this. I can only move my two front teeth none of my others move which makes me panic. They have been like this for around 4 weeks now and don't seem to be tightening back up, how long do they usually take? They both wriggle at the bottom of the tooth and still seem to be securely in place at my gum line thank god! It just panics me I don't want them to fall out 😱

@UncleFoster sorry, also what do you mean by teeth have some natural movement in them? Should they be wriggling as they are then?

Teeth arent held completely solidly in your bone.

Everyone can every so slightly move their teeth. Im only talking less than a mm, but lots of people mistake this natural movement for loose teeth. So if you hold the crown of your tooth and wiggle it, it wont feel solid. This is normally most obvious on your front teeth because of the shape of these teeth and roots

If it feels solid when you try by the gum line its not that loose, so they wont fall out.

Dont keep wiggling them. If you have some gingitivitis because of pregnancy this may make them feel looser. But it really depends how much movement you have.

emilyx123 · 28/05/2020 12:58

@UncleFoster thanks so much for this! There is now a slight gap in between my two front teeth it must be because they are slightly loose is this normal? Sorry for all the questions lol. I'm going to stop touching them and hope they don't get worse. I can't move them with my tongue so they can't be that loose so that must be some good news right?! 😂

If you cant move them with your tongue then no they arent that loose Smile

I would leave them alone for now. Clean them really well, make sure you are flossing daily etc. Avoid wiggling them as much as possible

Give it a couple of weeks and see if theres any change.

If they still feel loose, or have got any worse give your dentist another call.
