Maternity leave- telling employer if baby arrives early

Hello so my due date is 1st August and my maternity leave actually starts on that day. I'm taking annual leave for 3 weeks before it , so my last working day is 10th July.
I've had a letter from employer to say if baby arrives early I need to tell them cause they need to adjust my maternity start date to the day the baby is born. Which is annoying cause I didn't realise. 😊
Has anyone else had to do this and did you actually tell them?

Mine were late so it didn’t matter but yes, you need to tell them.

Hello, you do need to inform... but your annual leave will get added onto the end of your maternity leave so makes little difference really (apart from maybe the pay which you have to wait until the end 🙈)

Hercwasonaroll · 28/05/2020 07:55

You need to tell them but your holiday should move to the end so you won't lose out.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 28/05/2020 07:57

Yes, but I was 9 weeks early.

I did the same thing and then the baby came a week early. Everyone at work knew he was born but my line manager didn’t do anything about it. Or at least I assume he didn’t as I have had no letters from HR revising my dates and my money worked out exactly as I had planned (would have started SMP a week earlier).

Ahh okay I was wondering how they'd work it out with my annual leave but Yeah I'd just have extra for the end of my maternity leave which would be ok.
Baby will probs be 2 weeks late anyways knowing my luck 😂

I was still on holiday as may leave hadn't started. I told work but they didn't do anything about it and left it as it was.

Second time I didn't even finish work! Went to hospital for a routine appointment at lunch and never went back as they admitted me.....DS was born 3 days later!

mummyh2016 · 28/05/2020 08:29

This happened to me, my maternity leave was due to start on my due date and I took 3 weeks annual leave before. DD was 2 weeks early. Work didn't change my start date.

jdy123 · 28/05/2020 08:36

Okay thanks everyone. I'd rather my start date didn't change tbf so I get my 3 weeks full pay.... so hoping that'll be the same for me.

I'm due in October and thinking the same thing as I need to tell them what I want to do!

You do need to tell them, and they should change your start date. But I think some HRs don't bother to change the start date, as it's more work for them, when the end result is the same.

My start date did change though. I was admitted mid-shift at 36 weeks, which triggered maternity leave. Baby was born a week later. The annual leave I was supposed to take before maternity leave is now getting tacked onto the end, which is nice. Little bonus after I won't have been paid for 3 months. Smile

This happened to me . I was meant to go on maternity leave at 39 weeks . I was working , not on holiday so there was no hiding it when baby came at 37 weeks . I sent an email to my boss when I was in labour telling him .
