I've stopped eating fatty foods, big meals, etc but I am STILL getting horrible, painful heartburn. What can I do?

Try Gaviscon.
It works for me. I just swig from the bottle after almost every meal

PrincessGoodLife · 20/09/2007 21:27

part and parcel of pregnancy I'm afraid!

a massive bottle of Gaviscon was permanently sticking out of my handbag throughout my pregnancy.

sarahhal · 20/09/2007 21:27

Oh I remember that!! Second the Gaviscon - I went everywhere with the huge sized bottles and panicked if I didn't have any!!

How pg are you? Towards the end of my second pregnancy, my GP prescribed Ranitogen - or something like that - and although it didn't sort it out completely, it certainly lasted longer than Gaviscon!!

macdoodle · 20/09/2007 21:28

See your GP and ASK for ranitidine/zantac - it is the ONLY thing that works - you can buy it but it is expensive and if you are obviously pregnant the chemist may not sell it to you...

TheYoungVisiter · 20/09/2007 21:29

Agree - don't be a hero, just take whatever makes it feel better!

I found eating early, eating in a very upright chair, and staying sitting upright for at least an hour after supper helped (last thing you want when you are pregnant and desperate to slump on the sofa, I know).

macdoodle · 20/09/2007 21:31

Agree currently sat upright not eaten yet waiting for ranitidine to kick in gruesome

Stefka · 20/09/2007 21:34

I got Maalox from my Dr which worked for me.

sleepfinder · 20/09/2007 21:54

Thanks for all your suggestions. This is my 2nd preg and I didn't have this problem at all first time round (last year only!)

I will definitely try the sitting up thing / early meal and staying sat upright.

If that doesn't work I'll take all the drugs.

Thanks again!!!

try some licorice as well in small amounts. you need everything to move along a bit more so it does not get backed up. all meals should be high in fibre. i used to find that just sprinkling a bit of bran on everything worked well.

try the strongest liqud gaviscon you can get as this should coat the area well and stop some pain for a while. try not to drink imediately after taking the gaviscon as you want to keep a good coating of it on the affected area.

cut out any caffeine this is just like turing the tap on as far as acid production is concerned. caffiene is in more than just coffee.

Pheebe · 21/09/2007 12:55

I can't stand any of the 'anti-heartburn' meds at all, all disgusting and make me throw up and calcium tablets made me constipated and I got piles!!! I;ve found the only other thng that helps is full fat milk, either as it comes or in a very milky (decaf) coffee, with or stright after food. had the best nights sleep in weeks after a running out of skimmed and resorting to full fat milk the other day.

Wisteria · 21/09/2007 13:00

You will think I'm a crazy lentil weaving hippy and I admit I am a little, but I had terrible heartburn during pregnancy and my Mum told me to do this, I laughed and laughed at her old wives taley superstitious claptrap at the time, but in desperation finally tried it and it blardy well works (and doesn't taste foul like gaviscon either!)

Boil a kettle, then pour boiling water into a cup add 3-6 drops of peppermint oil, depending on how much you like it - the real stuff from health food shop not crap stuff from supermarket, plus a teaspoon of clear honey, stir and sip this from a spoon.

barbamama · 21/09/2007 13:05

nightmare isn't it? I found 20 or so rennies a day (and night) were the only thing that helped me plus a pint of milk by the bedside towards the end. I may have slightly overdone the recommended daily dose but you can take rennies now in pregnancy - couldn't in my previous pg (guess they've been tested or licenced or whatever).

sleepfinder · 21/09/2007 17:43

i'm going to try the peppermint oil theory.
I hate licorice it makes me heave and my family have hisotry of weird allergic reactions to rennies (I know, how COULD THEY? but they do..)

thanks again!

i went to the doctors and had to have huge bottle of gaviscon every 2 days it was so bad its just all the acid being pushed up by baby not much soothed it for me just kept swigging on my gaviscon lol

Wisteria · 21/09/2007 18:26

oh she told me it had to be sipped from the side of a silver teaspoon but I figured that was bollocks so didn't bother with it!!

It soothes the throat burn especially well if memory serves me correctly!

MitfordSisters · 21/09/2007 21:48

Wisteria - don't apologise for yourself - sounds like a good way to cool things down. If I were you sleepy, I'd avoid nightshade plants (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines), alcohol, chiili, sugar, chocolate, and have more green veg, apples, skimmed milk, oats - ayurveda - see gowri motha's gentle birth method book
