Early pre-eclampsia

I was induced at 37 weeks with ds due to pre-eclampsia.

I only only 19 weeks with baby number 2 and for the last few weeks my bp has crept up.

Today, it is 145/100 and I have traces of protein in my urine.
I know that protein doesn't always mean pre-eclampsia, but given my history and bp, the gp and midwife are concerned. I have a two week sick note and have to see the midwife tomorrow.

Has anyone else had these symptoms so early on? Would like to hear of your experiences.

Popsycal - sorry to hear this - you must be worried!

I started a thread a while ago about my friend who is expecting twins who was admitted to hospital with pre-eclampsia.

Her diastolic bp is hovering around the 90-100's at the moment and they are not going to deliver her unless it gets worse. She will also receive medication to keep the bp lower once it reaches 105-110 ish. However, she has been told that although this helps for a while the other indicators tend to continue to worsen, abeit a bit slower than without the medication.

There are two studies currently underway which you might find interesting and worth mentioning to your midwife/consultant. One is the use of asprin in people at higher risk of p-e and the use of vit c and vit e. I think both of these were on the action on p-e website.

My friend was first diagnosed at 21 weeks and she has just passed 30 weeks, so she has hung in there She has spent the last 2 weeks in hospital and will be there until she gives birth now.

I hope thigs work out well for you!

Can I suggest you look at this website to see if anything in there can help you?
I don't have experience of this problem.... and everyone I know who has had pre-eclampsia the 1st time didn't get it the 2nd time.

popsycal · 11/10/2004 11:41

thanks soapbox and sobernow
ds is just gone 2 but as i normally work full time he is at the childminders anyway - so he will still be going.

I will look at that link sobernow, but will wait til later on as I have just scared myself stupid by googling!

The gp mentioned bp medication this morning but wants to wait to see if rest helps.

As for special care - ds was in special care and we were in hospital 3 weeks - but for something completely unrelated to pre-eclampsia so you never know what will happen.

I am off to have a bath and off to book myself a facial and floatation session for later in the week

Hi Popsy......just wanted to know how you were feeling. I had PE with ds and am totally freaked out about getting it again. Am now 34 weeks PG and OK ATM but know it could rear its head at any time.

Put your feet up and watch a good film with a cup of tea!! Hope you are OK

popsycal · 11/10/2004 19:19

TBH I am totally shattered. I am going to use this time off to relax and put my feet up.

Feel ok but a bit down about everything

Thanks for your support everyone

Glad to hear you're feeling ok. Sounds like quite a busy morning - I thought you were supposed to be taking life easy. Can I come and have some soup - it sounds delicious!

zippy539 · 12/10/2004 11:39

Hi popsycal

sorry you are going through this. I was induced at 38 weeks for PE with ds. I was terrified next time round and at about 19/20 weeks my BP did start creeping up again and I had some dodgy platelet results which freaked me out. Weirdly though, it all settled again within a couple of weeks and only became an issue again much later in the pregnancy. The stress was horrible though. I'm hoping this is just a blip for you but even if it's not at least everyone is aware of what is happening and you'll get the best care available.

popsycal · 12/10/2004 11:41

thanks zippy - your story sounds almost identical to mine

my biggest worry though, is that is that in these 2 weeks off (and then half term holiday) my bp will settle down, I will go back to work, get mega stressed again and will be back to square one in a few weeks.

been feeling low and down recently too and very anxious about work and worrying about wherther they will let me go part time etc

things have just bee building up for a few months

Did you look at that webiste Popsycal ?

beachyhead · 12/10/2004 16:33

I had pre-eclampsia at 28 - 31 weeks and delivered at 31 weeks the first time. Second time, I got to 37 weeks and we chose to deliver. Please don't worry about work - you are on sick leave and they cannot force you to start your maternity leave until 6 wks before the due date. So relax - have three days complete bedrest and chill out and then see what you want to do re: getting up and about. If you can keep your BP down by relaxing they won't take you in hopefully (which you probably don't need). APEC were fantastic and also the hospital were great and gave me protein sticks to test at home and let me go in and be monitored whenever I wanted.... Hope it is just a blip and it stays stable for at least 8 more weeks.... Don't worry about work and don't start negotiating about part time now - you can do all that when you are off. Just worry about your health and bump....

popsycal · 12/10/2004 19:09

Hi again
went to the midwife and bp is donw today to 130/90 - a bit lower but not anywhere near where it normally is! Traces of protein still in urine though

Midwife said that that particular doc hardly ever gives sick notes out so I must have worried her....

I heard that work can't force maternity to start until 36 weeks now......????

The boss knows that I will be putting in an application for part time - just have to formalise it now.

The midwife actually gave me a good talking to and said that I need to look after myself and use this time to reassess what is happening for the rest of the pregnancy. SHe said that her concern was that I would go back to work for afew weeks and then it would shoot up again and this time I would be further on and it would probably go higher. She said that if necessary they would put my on sick leave until maternity starts after xmas!!!!!

I feel more positive and am going to try to chill out, Got to see dox mid week next week but not to hestitate to go to docs, ring midwife or hospital if I get any more high bp symptoms.

Thanks again for asking folks!

sorry to hear your bp is still high.

This is a warning mrs pops you need to look after yourself and if that means going on sick till your mat leave startes then so be it -

You need to remember that it's not just you n bump this time your ds needs a well n happy mammy to

(mean all this in a nice way of course)

take care of yourself
love FD xxx
